To identify a vintage Vertex, examine the watch as a collection of parts—not as a logo or a single stamped number. Document the dial, case, movement, and markings, then compare them with credible examples of the specific Vertex model claimed. A broad arrow or Vertex signature is useful evidence, but neither proves that the complete watch is authentic or original.
What counts as a vintage Vertex—and what does not
Vertex’s official history says Claude Lyons founded the company in 1912. Its early business included re-casing Swiss movements in Britain, so the Vertex name alone does not mean every component was made by Vertex. The British Horological Institute’s account of the company’s history and supplier relationships provides further context for why component makers and brand names should not be treated as interchangeable. For the wartime watch, Vertex says it received navigation-watch specifications in 1943 and began large-scale production of its Cal 59 W.W.W. in 1944. The company reports that 4,652 were delivered in preparation for D-Day; this is Vertex’s historical account, not an independently audited figure. Vertex also describes itself as the sole British-based maker among the original twelve “Dirty Dozen” brands. Vertex’s heritage timeline
The modern M100A is a tribute to the military watch, not a wartime Cal 59. Vertex lists a 40 mm case and automatic Sellita SW260-1 movement for the current M100A. Those modern specifications are not a checklist for identifying the historical watch. Vertex M100A specifications

How to examine a vintage Vertex
1. Record the watch before disturbing it
Take clear photographs of the dial straight-on, case front and sides, crown, case back, strap or bracelet, and every visible marking. Note the dimensions and condition. Save the seller’s description and any provenance separately from your own observations so claims are not mistaken for things you have verified. A 10× watchmaker’s loupe can help reveal small print and marks; it cannot authenticate a watch.
2. Match each marking to the part it appears on
Record the dial signature and any military or broad-arrow marks. If a qualified watchmaker opens the case, ask for photographs of the movement inscriptions, calibre information, numbers, inside of the case back, and hallmarks. A case-maker mark concerns the case; an inscription on a movement concerns the movement. They may identify different makers and need not share a serial sequence. Do not force open a case yourself for a photograph.

3. Compare the whole configuration with the claimed model
Use credible, documented examples of the exact model the seller identifies. Compare the case shape and construction, dial layout and printing, hands, movement, and inscriptions. Ask whether the parts make sense together. A genuine Vertex component can be fitted to a different watch; a replacement component can also alter originality without making the remaining watch non-Vertex. The available references do not provide a complete Vertex-specific parts catalogue, so a partial resemblance is not a definitive match.
4. Treat serials and hallmarks as clues, not verdicts
A case number is not automatically the movement serial, and serial references may be incomplete. Dating can depend on case marks, dial style, and movement features considered together. Hallmarks can help establish the metal and assay context; a hallmark or sponsor’s mark is evidence about the case or its maker or assayer, not proof that the entire watch is original.

5. Get an expert inspection when the stakes are high
For a significant purchase, conflicting components, or a suspected military-issue watch, request clear photographs and an inspection by a watchmaker experienced with vintage military watches. Ask for written observations that distinguish components assessed as original, replaced, or uncertain. The sources cited here do not establish that Vertex currently offers archive authentication or certificates for individual vintage watches; confirm directly before relying on such a service.

A “Dirty Dozen” claim is a claim about a particular wartime model, not merely about a watch bearing Vertex’s name. Check whether the dial, case, movement, and military markings collectively fit a documented Cal 59 example. The company’s own timeline establishes its account of wartime production, but it is not a component-by-component authentication guide. A broad arrow by itself does not establish military issue, and a matching-looking dial does not establish that the rest of the watch belongs with it.

Separate identity from originality and condition. A watch may be a genuine Vertex but contain service or later replacement parts; wear, corrosion, dial changes, and service state affect condition but do not alone determine identity. If the components conflict or the documentation is thin, treat the claim as unconfirmed until a specialist assesses it.

What the available evidence cannot settle
The cited references do not establish one decisive counterfeit tell, a comprehensive Vertex-specific authentication checklist, an independently verified counterfeit-rate statistic, or a current archive service for authenticating individual watches. No one mark or number can resolve those gaps. When authenticity materially affects a purchase or valuation, use a specialist’s hands-on assessment rather than treating online comparisons as a certificate.
