On a paired iPhone, go to Apple Watch app > My Watch > General > About. On the watch itself, use Settings > General > About.
There you can find the model name, hardware model number, serial number, and—on GPS + Cellular models—the IMEI. Use the five-digit model number beginning with A to match the watch with Apple’s official identification list. Then use the serial number at Apple’s coverage checker to check warranty and AppleCare status.

What you can identify
Apple Watch identification involves several different numbers and descriptions. They are not interchangeable.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches| Item | Where to find it | What it tells you |
|---|---|---|
| Model Name | About screen | The human-readable product family, such as Apple Watch Series 9, SE, or Ultra. |
| Generation or collection | Model name and Apple’s model list | Whether it is a Series, SE, Ultra, Nike, Hermès, or another edition. |
| Case size | Rear engraving, model lookup, box, or receipt | The physical case height in millimeters. |
| Model number | About screen | The five-digit A-number that identifies the hardware configuration. |
| Part number | About screen before tapping the model field | A longer sales code beginning with M that can encode sales, color, band, and regional details. |
| Serial number | About screen, case, Apple records | The unique identity of the individual watch, used for support and coverage. |
| IMEI | About screen on cellular models | The cellular-device identifier. GPS-only watches do not have one. |
| Coverage status | Apple coverage checker or My Support | Whether Apple’s Limited Warranty or an AppleCare plan is active. |
Apple also lists supporting information such as watchOS version, capacity, network, carrier, ICCID, and EID in the About section. These details can help confirm a configuration but do not replace the A-number when identifying the model.

Identify an Apple Watch with the paired iPhone
- Open the Apple Watch app on the iPhone.
- Tap My Watch.
- Go to General > About.
- Record the Model Name, Model Number, and Serial Number.
- If the watch is cellular, record the IMEI as well.
The Model Number field may initially show a longer code beginning with M. That is the part number, not the A-number normally used in Apple’s hardware identification list. Tap the field once to switch it to the five-digit model number beginning with A.
Copy the A-number exactly, then search for it on Apple’s Identify your Apple Watch page. Confirm the generation, case size, connectivity, region, and any special-edition information listed there.
Identify the watch directly
If you have the watch but not its paired iPhone, use the watch’s own menus:
Recommended Free Tools
Settings > General > About
Depending on the watchOS version and model, this screen can show the model name, model number, serial number, software version, network, carrier, IMEI, and other cellular identifiers. Apple’s watchOS documentation describes the information available in About.
This is the preferred route when the watch is being inspected before a sale, when the rear engraving is difficult to read, or when several generations look similar.
Find the Apple Watch serial number
When the watch turns on
- On the watch: Settings > General > About > Serial Number.
- On the paired iPhone: Apple Watch app > My Watch > General > About > Serial Number.
When the watch is unavailable or damaged
Apple provides physical identification locations:
- For Apple Watch Series 1 and later, remove the band and inspect the band slot for the serial engraving.
- For the first-generation Apple Watch, inspect the engraving on the back of the case.
Other possible sources include the original box label, receipt, order email, Apple Account device records, and Apple Support or My Support. Apple may require account verification or proof of purchase, so these routes are possible fallbacks rather than guaranteed replacements for the About screen.

Transcribe the serial number carefully. If the watch is being sold, avoid publishing a full serial number in a public listing unless there is a specific reason to do so. Mask it in screenshots and provide it privately to a legitimate buyer or service provider when necessary.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteFind the IMEI
An IMEI appears only on GPS + Cellular Apple Watch models. Find it in either location:
- Watch: Settings > General > About.
- Paired iPhone: Apple Watch app > My Watch > General > About.
An IMEI confirms that the watch has cellular hardware, but it is not the same as the Apple Watch’s model number or serial number. A GPS-only watch will not have an IMEI.
Determine the case size
Apple Watch case size is measured by the height of the case in millimeters. It is separate from wrist size, display size, and band sizing.
Use these methods, in order of reliability:
- Read the rear case engraving. The size may be engraved on the back.
- Look up the A-number. Apple’s identification page associates model numbers with case sizes and configurations.
- Check the box, receipt, order email, or Apple Account purchase record.
- Use Apple’s product page as supporting evidence. Do not rely on a visual comparison alone.
Do not infer case size from the band. A band may fit multiple case-size families, and third-party bands can be mislabeled. For example, current U.S. Apple pages list the Apple Watch Series 11 in 42mm and 46mm sizes, the Apple Watch SE 3 in 40mm and 44mm sizes, and the Apple Watch Ultra 2 and Ultra 3 at 49mm. Older generations use other combinations, including 38/42mm, 40/44mm, and 41/45mm. Always check the specific generation rather than applying a current size chart to an older watch.
Tell GPS and GPS + Cellular models apart
The most dependable method is to check the About screen and then verify the A-number against Apple’s model list.

Useful supporting clues include:
- An IMEI in About.
- Network, carrier, or cellular information in About.
- A cellular option in the original purchase record.
- A model number Apple identifies as GPS + Cellular.
- A red ring or other external marking on some older cellular models.
External markings are not universal across generations, regions, materials, and special editions. Do not identify connectivity from appearance alone. Cellular status matters for carrier activation, resale value, Family Setup eligibility, and whether an IMEI exists.
Match the A-number to Apple’s official model list
- Copy the five-digit A-number from the About screen.
- Open Apple’s Identify your Apple Watch page.
- Use the page’s generation headings or your browser’s find function.
- Search for the exact A-number.
- Compare the listed generation, size, connectivity, region, material, finish, and collection.
One Apple Watch generation can have multiple A-numbers. Differences may reflect GPS versus GPS + Cellular hardware, North American versus Europe/Asia-Pacific versions, mainland China variants, or Nike and Hermès configurations. Apple also adds new generations to the page, so a third-party chart or old article may be incomplete.
As of the current Apple identification and U.S. shopping pages, Apple’s lineup includes Series 11, SE 3, Ultra 3, Series 10, Ultra 2, Series 9, and earlier generations. Availability and naming can differ by country, and the live Apple page should take precedence over an old chart.
Check the standard Apple Watch warranty
- Open Apple’s coverage checker.
- Enter the watch’s serial number, not its IMEI or A-number.
- Complete the verification step.
- Review the displayed coverage and support information.
- Save the expiration date or take a screenshot for your records.
You can also sign in to My Support to view devices, coverage, and repair information. The result may show whether the Limited Warranty is active, whether an AppleCare plan is associated with the watch, and which service options are available.
In the United States, Apple’s Limited Warranty generally covers the watch and included Apple-branded accessories against manufacturing defects for one year from the purchase date. It generally does not cover accidental damage, normal battery depletion, or cosmetic damage that does not affect functionality. Unauthorized modifications or service can also affect coverage. The one-year description is a U.S. general term, not a universal worldwide rule; consumer-law rights and warranty periods vary by country or region. See Apple’s repair and service information for applicable terms.
If Apple’s purchase date is wrong, keep the original sales receipt and contact Apple Support to request a correction. Coverage information can depend on when the purchase was reported to Apple.

Check AppleCare and AppleCare+
AppleCare+ is separate from the standard Limited Warranty. A watch can have an expired Limited Warranty but active AppleCare+, or it can have neither.

- The original receipt, Apple email confirmation, or Apple Account purchase history.
AppleCare+ can add accidental-damage service, priority support, and Express Replacement Service. Theft-and-loss benefits apply only when the specific plan explicitly includes Theft and Loss; they are not included in every AppleCare product.
AppleCare+ with Theft and Loss
For an Apple Watch theft-or-loss claim, Apple says Find My must have been enabled when the watch was lost or stolen and must remain enabled during the claims process. Do not remove the watch from the associated Apple Account before the claim is approved. A serial number or other device information may be required. Follow Apple’s current theft-and-loss claim instructions.
Apple’s current U.S. pages describe AppleCare+ with Theft and Loss for Apple Watch as covering up to two theft-or-loss incidents every 12 months, subject to the plan terms. AppleCare One uses a separate shared claim structure described by Apple as up to three total theft-and-loss claims every 12 months for covered iPhone, iPad, and Apple Watch products.
U.S. price and fee examples
Apple’s U.S. pages retrieved in August 2026 listed AppleCare+ with Theft and Loss at $2.99 per month or $29.99 per year for Apple Watch SE 3, $4.99 per month or $49.99 per year for Series 11, and $5.99 per month or $59.99 per year for Apple Watch Ultra. AppleCare One was listed at $19.99 per month for up to three Apple products, with additional products listed at $5.99 per month each.

If the watch is dead, erased, or not paired
If you have the physical watch
Try the band-slot engraving or rear engraving. If it can be charged but will not complete setup, the case, box, and purchase records may still identify it.
If you have the paired iPhone but not the watch
Use Apple Watch app > My Watch > General > About. This is usually the best route because it can reveal the model, serial number, and cellular information without the watch being in your possession.
If you have neither working device
Check, in order:
- Apple Account device records and Apple Support tools.
- The original box label.
- The receipt or order email.
- The physical band-slot engraving.
- Apple Support or an Apple Authorized Service Provider.
Apple may not disclose every device detail without account verification or proof of ownership.
If the watch was erased
Erasing it does not eliminate every identification method. The A-number, case engraving, box, receipt, paired-device history, and Apple Account records may still identify it. However, an erased watch may not show the former owner’s account or coverage information until it is set up again.
Troubleshoot a failed coverage or identification check
If Apple’s coverage checker rejects the serial number, the most common causes are a transcription error, confusing zero with the letter O, entering the IMEI instead of the serial number, an incorrect purchase date, or an Apple record that has not updated after a replacement device.
- Re-copy the serial number from the About screen.
- Compare it with the engraving, box, or receipt.
- Make sure you are entering the serial number rather than the A-number or IMEI.
- Sign in to My Support.
- Keep proof of purchase.
- Contact Apple if the date, ownership record, or replacement-device record is incorrect.
If an old article does not list your A-number, use Apple’s live identification page. Older charts may omit regional variants, cellular versions, Nike or Hermès editions, replacement cases, and newly released models.
Checklist for buying or selling a used Apple Watch
A serial-number lookup alone does not prove that a used watch is legitimate, unlocked, or free of Activation Lock.
For buyers
- See the actual watch powered on.
- Open Settings > General > About and confirm the model name and A-number.
- Confirm the case size from the device or Apple’s model list.
- Check whether it is GPS or GPS + Cellular and, if cellular, whether an IMEI is present.
- Ask the seller to erase it correctly.
- Make sure it reaches the setup screen without requesting another person’s Apple Account.
- Do not treat a seller-provided serial number as proof of ownership or Activation Lock status.
For sellers
- Record the model, size, connectivity, serial number, and IMEI if applicable.
- Remove personal data and erase the watch using Apple’s current instructions.
- Make sure Activation Lock is removed and the watch is no longer tied to your Apple Account.
- Mask the full serial number in a public listing where possible.
- Keep the serial number and a copy of the bill of sale privately.
Quick reference
