Apple provides ways to identify a model, find its identifiers, check coverage, pair the watch, and manage Activation Lock—but its published guidance does not describe a definitive consumer counterfeit test. Before buying, combine the checks below and treat conflicting details as a reason to pause.
1. Find the serial number on the watch itself
On the watch, open Settings > General > About. If it is paired to an iPhone, you can also find it in the Apple Watch app > My Watch > General > About. Apple says the serial number is also on the case: remove the band and inspect the band slot on Series 1 and later; the first-generation Apple Watch has its serial engraved on the back. Apple’s serial number and IMEI instructions explain where to look. The IMEI is present only on GPS + Cellular models.
Compare the number shown in the watch settings with the number on its case, where available. A matching number is useful corroboration, but not proof: a serial can be copied, and Apple’s published coverage guidance does not say its lookup detects copied serials. Do not rely on a seller’s box photo in place of checking the watch.
2. Check the A-number against Apple’s model guide
In the iPhone’s Apple Watch app, open My Watch > General > About. Tap the Model Number field. Apple says the displayed value changes from a part number beginning with M to a five-digit model number beginning with A. Compare that A-number with Apple’s Apple Watch identification guide.

Check that the model and its GPS or GPS + Cellular configuration match what the seller claims. Apple adds models over time and regional configurations can vary, so use the current identification guide rather than relying on a generic list elsewhere.
3. Compare the physical watch with the identified model
Once you have the A-number, compare the watch’s construction with Apple’s entry for that model. Check the case size, material, color, case back, and any Digital Crown features Apple lists. A mismatch—for example, construction details that do not fit the identified model—is a red flag to investigate.

Matching the guide is not a guarantee of authenticity. A genuine watch may also have damage, a mismatched band, or replacement parts; those conditions are different from counterfeit hardware and are not resolved by model identification alone.
4. Use Apple’s coverage lookup as a supporting check
Enter the watch’s serial number on Apple’s Check Coverage page. Review whether the device and coverage information returned are consistent with the watch and the seller’s claims. The page checks coverage and benefits; it is not presented as a counterfeit-authentication service.

A plausible result does not establish that the serial belongs to the physical watch in your hand. An invalid result or a mismatch deserves investigation, but a successful lookup should not end your checks.
5. Try the normal pairing and setup flow
Ask the seller to let you pair the watch using the iPhone’s Apple Watch app and proceed far enough to see whether setup behaves as expected. Apple’s pairing and setup guidance describes the normal process and troubleshooting, but successful pairing is not a counterfeit certificate. Pairing issues can have ordinary causes too, such as the watch still being paired to someone else’s iPhone.

6. Confirm Activation Lock is removed before paying
Have the seller unpair the watch and make sure you can proceed with setup using your own Apple Account. Apple says, “Find My and Activation Lock for your Apple Watch turn on automatically when you set up Find My on your paired iPhone.” Apple’s Activation Lock guidance explains that the previous owner’s Apple Account credentials are needed to unpair or pair and use a locked watch with a new iPhone.
An Activation-Locked watch is a serious ownership and usability problem, but the lock itself does not mean the watch is counterfeit. Do not pay for a watch that the seller cannot release from their account and hand over for setup.

7. Check the seller, purchase evidence, and return route
Prefer a seller whose identity and transaction are traceable. Ask for the original receipt or other purchase evidence if available, and agree on a return route before paying. Treat pressure to skip the identifier, model, or handoff checks as a reason to stop rather than as evidence of counterfeit status. Apple’s US warranty terms discuss proof of purchase and security requirements for service; warranty terms and consumer rights differ by geography.

What to do if the checks conflict
- Pause the purchase or return the watch if you can; do not let a successful serial lookup outweigh a model or setup mismatch.
- Ask Apple Support or an Apple Authorized Service Provider to inspect or advise you. Apple also provides a channel to report suspected counterfeit or knockoff products.
- Do not open the watch to investigate it. If the concern is a replacement part, damage, or an altered device rather than counterfeit hardware, seek professional inspection.
