To link an Apple Watch face to a Focus in iOS 16, open Settings > Focus on your iPhone, choose a Focus, then go to Customize Screens > Choose beneath the Apple Watch option. Select a face already in your collection and tap Done. When that Focus becomes active on the paired Watch, the selected face should appear.
What linking a face to a Focus does
Introduced with iOS 16, this feature associates a saved Apple Watch face with a Focus. It is a built-in Focus setting—not a new face or a separate automation. For example, you could pair Work Focus with a face showing calendar and mail complications, and Fitness Focus with one emphasizing Activity or workout information. Apple describes Focus as a way to coordinate settings such as notifications and personalized screens across devices. Apple’s iOS 16 announcement introduced these connections.
The association is configured on the iPhone. The Watch follows the active Focus state; it does not need a separate face automation for this basic setup. The steps below use the iOS 16 labels. Apple’s current guide documents the same path, though labels or screen layout can vary in later software versions: Apple Watch User Guide: Focus.
Before you begin
- Use an iPhone running iOS 16 or later, paired with an Apple Watch.
- Add the face you want to use to your Apple Watch face collection first. The Focus selector chooses from available faces; it does not create one.
- Make sure the iPhone and Watch are signed in to the expected Apple Account and are communicating normally.
- If Focus turns on at different times on the iPhone and Watch, check Settings > Focus > Share Across Devices on the iPhone.
Apple’s documentation confirms the feature but does not provide a complete iOS 16-era iPhone and Watch compatibility matrix, so do not assume a particular Watch model is supported solely from these steps.

Link a face while creating a new Focus
- On the iPhone, open Settings and tap Focus.
- Tap the + button, then choose Custom or another available Focus type.
- Give the Focus a name and choose its icon and color.
- Configure permitted people and apps, or skip those options if you do not need them.
- Under Customize Screens, tap Choose beneath the Apple Watch option.
- Select a saved watch face, then tap Done.
- Finish creating the Focus.
The setup order and wording reflect the iOS 16 interface; later iOS versions may arrange Focus creation differently. A contemporary walkthrough of the original flow is available from MacRumors.
Link or change a face for an existing Focus
- Open Settings > Focus on the iPhone.
- Tap the existing Focus, such as Work, Personal, or Sleep.
- Scroll to Customize Screens and tap Choose under the Apple Watch option.
- Pick the saved face you want and tap Done.
You can associate a different face with each Focus. The setting is designed to select a face for a Focus, not to rotate through multiple faces within one Focus. If you want separate faces for different activities, create separate Focus modes—for example, Running and Gym.

Test the face change
- On the iPhone, swipe down from the upper-right corner to open Control Center.
- Tap Focus, then choose the Focus you configured.
- Check the Apple Watch. Once the Focus is active there, the selected face should appear.
You can also turn on a Focus from Apple Watch Control Center. Apple says enabling a Focus on the Watch activates it on the iPhone when the devices share their Focus state. If the Watch is disconnected or the state has not synchronized yet, the change may not appear immediately.
Schedule the Focus for automatic switching
The face follows the Focus; it is not an independent time-of-day face scheduler. To have it change on a schedule, schedule the Focus itself. On iPhone, open Settings > Focus > [Focus] > Add Schedule and choose an available time, location, or other trigger. Apple also documents Focus scheduling in Watch settings. Turn the Focus off or choose another face
Turning off the Focus should restore the face that was active before it began, though behavior can depend on software state and manual changes. You can also manually select another face on the Watch if you want to override the automatic selection. You do not need to remove the Focus-face association just to return to a normal face.
Troubleshoot a missing option or face that will not switch
The Apple Watch option or Choose button is missing
Possible causes include an iOS version older than 16, an unpaired or temporarily disconnected Watch, outdated device software, an incomplete Focus setup, or no usable saved face. These are troubleshooting possibilities, not a definitive compatibility diagnosis.

- Confirm the iPhone is running iOS 16 or later and update the devices if updates are available.
- Confirm the Watch is paired, unlocked, and communicating with the iPhone.
- Leave the Focus screen, then reopen it from Settings > Focus.
- Check the Watch app for faces in your collection. If needed, add one through Face Gallery, then return to Focus settings. Apple’s guide to managing faces is at Change the settings on your Apple Watch.
- Check Settings > Focus > Share Across Devices, then restart both devices if the option still does not appear.
- If the selector remains missing, try assigning a face to a newly created test Focus.
The Focus is active, but the Watch face does not change
- Confirm the Focus is active on the iPhone and on the Watch.
- Check that the selected face is still in the Watch face collection.
- If you manually changed faces after activating the Focus, toggle the Focus off and on to test the association again.
- Check Share Across Devices and toggle the Focus off and on once more.
- Restart the iPhone and Watch. If the issue continues, remove the face association from the Focus and add it again.
Scheduled, location-based, Sleep, and manually activated Focus modes can show different timing or synchronization symptoms. Test the link manually first; that helps separate an association problem from a trigger or connectivity delay.
The face you want is unavailable
On iPhone, open the Watch app and use Face Gallery or your existing face collection to add or configure the desired face. Then return to Settings > Focus and assign it.

Focus sharing is not the same as Focus filters
Share Across Devices lets Focus state and preferences be used across devices signed in to the same Apple Account. Focus filters are different: Apple says filters themselves do not sync across devices in the same way, even when sharing is enabled. A watch-face association and a filter are separate parts of Focus setup. See Apple’s iPhone User Guide: Set up a Focus.
When Shortcuts may be useful instead
For the basic goal of changing a face when a Focus turns on, use the native Focus association. Shortcuts automations can offer other triggers, such as time or location, but require more setup and their behavior or confirmation prompts can depend on the trigger and software version. Do not rely on a Shortcut as a guaranteed substitute without checking how it behaves on your devices.
