At a contactless terminal, the device uses NFC to communicate with the reader. The wallet normally uses a tokenized version of your card rather than exposing the physical card number in its ordinary form.
The basic process is simple: add and verify your card, look for the contactless symbol, authenticate, and hold the phone or watch near the reader until it vibrates, beeps, or displays a confirmation. Compatibility still depends on your device, software, country, bank, card network, merchant, and terminal.
What payments can you make with a phone or watch?
“Paying with your phone or watch” covers several different situations:
- In-store contactless payments: Hold your device near a compatible checkout reader. Look for the contactless, Apple Pay, or Google Pay symbol. The merchant must accept both the wallet and your particular card or network. Apple explains these acceptance requirements.
- In-app and website payments: Select the Apple Pay, Google Pay, or another supported wallet button at checkout, then authenticate. This is not the same as tapping a terminal. Apple documents its in-app and web checkout process.
- Transit: Some transit systems support contactless cards or wallet-based express payment. Support varies by city, country, operator, card, and wallet, so check the specific transit agency.
Tap to Pay on iPhone is different: it is mainly a merchant-acceptance technology that lets a business accept contactless payments on an iPhone. It is not the normal consumer method for paying with your own phone. See Apple’s Tap to Pay documentation.

Choose the right wallet
| Device | Typical wallet | Phone payments | Watch payments | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| iPhone | Apple Wallet / Apple Pay | Yes | Apple Watch | Cards must be supported by the issuer and separately available on the watch. |
| Android phone | Google Wallet | Yes, with NFC | Wear OS watch | Country, card, NFC, security, and Wear OS support are required. |
| Samsung Galaxy | Samsung Wallet or Google Wallet | Yes where supported | Compatible Galaxy Watch | Support varies by model, region, carrier, bank, and software. |
For Google Wallet, a phone needs NFC and a supported payment method. Wear OS payment also requires a supported watch, NFC, a compatible country, current Google Play Services and Wallet software, and a supported card. Google lists its watch requirements here.
Samsung Wallet requires compatible Samsung hardware, a Samsung account, a supported card and country, NFC or supported payment hardware, and a screen-lock security method. Samsung lists its requirements here.
What you need before setup
- A compatible phone or watch with current software.
- NFC for ordinary contactless phone or watch payments.
- Apple Pay, Google Wallet, or Samsung Wallet, depending on your device.
- A credit, debit, or prepaid card from a participating issuer.
- A passcode, PIN, fingerprint, Face ID, or another required security method.
- An internet connection during initial setup and issuer verification.
- A merchant terminal that accepts contactless payments.
A paired phone may be required to provision a card to a watch, even though the phone may not be needed when you later pay. A phone without NFC cannot make ordinary NFC tap payments, and a watch without NFC cannot make NFC contactless payments.

Set up payments on your watch
Apple Watch
- Open the Apple Watch app on the paired iPhone.
- Choose Wallet & Apple Pay.
- Tap Add Card.
- Add or verify the card and complete issuer verification.
- Confirm that the card appears in the watch’s Wallet.
A card appearing on the iPhone does not automatically prove that it is ready on the Apple Watch. Check the watch Wallet before leaving your phone behind.
Wear OS with Google Wallet
- Open Google Wallet on the watch.
- Tap Get started.
- Set a watch screen lock if prompted.
- Follow the instructions on the phone.
- Add or select a supported card and confirm that it appears on the watch.
Google says a card added to the watch is stored in the watch’s wallet, so the phone is not required at the moment of payment in supported circumstances. The watch should vibrate, make a sound, or show a blue checkmark after a successful payment. See Google’s watch instructions.

NFC must be enabled, and the antenna location differs between phones. Move the phone slowly if the first position does not register.
Galaxy phone with Samsung Wallet
- Open Samsung Wallet or swipe up to open Quick Access.
- Select the card.
- Tap Pay.
- Authenticate with your PIN, fingerprint, or another available method.
- Hold the back of the phone near the reader.
A thick or metal case can interfere with NFC. Remove it if the terminal does not respond. Samsung’s payment instructions include additional positioning guidance.
Any compatible smartwatch
- Open the wallet or use the watch’s payment shortcut.
- Select the card if necessary.
- Hold the watch face or relevant watch area close to the reader.
- Keep it steady until the watch vibrates, beeps, or confirms payment.
If a Galaxy Watch does not register immediately, Samsung recommends holding it within roughly one inch of the terminal. A watch may require its PIN again after a restart or if it detects that it has been removed from your wrist.
Can you pay without your phone, internet, or physical card?
Without the phone: Usually, yes, with a supported watch after the card has been provisioned to that watch. This is subject to the watch’s hardware, country, card issuer, security state, and wallet rules. The card must actually appear in the watch wallet.
Without cellular service or Wi-Fi: Initial setup normally needs an internet connection and issuer verification. A phone does not generally need an active call or data connection merely to tap in a store, but issuer, wallet, risk, transit, and offline-use rules can vary. Set up and test the wallet before relying on it offline.

With a dead battery: Do not assume payment will work. Some devices support limited transactions after losing power, but availability and limits vary. Carry a physical card or another payment method for emergencies.

Without the physical card: A wallet can replace the card for many purchases, but not every terminal, transit system, return, verification procedure, or offline situation.
Paying on websites, in apps, and on transit
At an online or in-app checkout, select the wallet button, review the shipping and payment information, then authenticate. The merchant must offer that wallet; merely having a contactless terminal does not guarantee that its website supports Apple Pay or Google Pay.
For transit, verify the exact system’s supported cards, express-payment rules, transfer handling, and whether you must use the same device when entering and exiting. A bank card that works at stores may not work on every transit network.

Mobile wallets reduce ordinary exposure of the physical card number, but they are not completely anonymous or risk-free. Apple describes Apple Pay as using a device-specific account number and a transaction-specific security code rather than sending the physical card number in the ordinary form. Apple’s security documentation explains the mechanism.

The practical protections include:
- Device authentication helps prevent casual use of a locked phone or watch.
- The merchant still receives transaction information needed to authorize and complete the purchase.
- Your bank can still decline or flag a payment.
- Wallet tokenization does not prevent phishing, fake checkout pages, compromised merchants, or account takeover.
- Lost devices can usually be locked remotely and their wallet cards suspended or removed. Apple provides lost-device controls; equivalent controls are available through the relevant device and account provider.
Troubleshooting failed payments
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Nothing happens | NFC is off, positioning is wrong, the case blocks the antenna, or the reader is unsupported. | Confirm contactless acceptance, enable NFC on Android, remove a thick or metal case, and hold the correct edge or back area steadily near the reader. |
| “Card not set up” or card unavailable | Issuer verification or wallet setup is incomplete, or the card is unsupported. | Finish setup, check the card and country eligibility, update the wallet and operating system, or contact the issuer. |
| The phone works but the watch fails | The card was added only to the phone, or the watch lacks a required PIN, NFC feature, software version, or regional support. | Add or activate the card separately on the watch and confirm its security and compatibility requirements. |
| The terminal requests a PIN or card insertion | The terminal or network requires additional verification, the amount exceeds a contactless limit, or the wallet transaction was not accepted correctly. | Follow the terminal’s instructions or use another payment method. A mobile wallet does not bypass every PIN, signature, amount, or verification rule. |
| Payment is declined | Issuer fraud controls, insufficient funds, card expiry, network mismatch, merchant restrictions, or a suspended wallet token. | Try another eligible card, check the physical card’s status, and ask the issuer whether the digital-wallet token is active. |
| A refund is difficult to locate | The wallet may use a digital card number different from the physical card number. | Keep the receipt, present the original phone or watch when possible, tell the merchant it was a wallet purchase, and contact the issuer if necessary. |
Samsung specifically identifies NFC settings, device positioning, separate watch registration, and digital card numbers as common sources of confusion. See its troubleshooting guidance and payment and refund guidance.
Returns, refunds, and disputes
Keep the receipt and, where possible, use the same phone or watch that made the purchase. Tell the merchant that you paid with a digital wallet. The wallet’s transaction history can help identify the purchase, but the merchant or issuer may need the digital payment credentials rather than the physical card number.
If the merchant cannot locate or reverse the transaction, contact the card issuer. Replacing a device or removing and re-registering a card can change its digital card number and complicate a return.
What to carry as a backup
Even if you normally pay by watch, carry a physical card or another payment method. A dead battery, unsupported terminal, contactless outage, locked account, issuer decline, transit restriction, or failed biometric check can make a backup necessary. Mobile payment is a convenient replacement for many transactions, not a guarantee that you will never need the physical card.
