The biggest improvement usually comes from wearing your tracker correctly and consistently—not from finding a hidden calibration setting. Wrist-worn devices estimate steps from motion, especially the rhythmic movement of your arm. They can miss steps when your arm is still and add steps during repetitive hand movements, so accuracy depends on placement, walking speed, gait, settings, and the activity itself.
Use the checks below to improve consistency, then test the result against a manually counted walk. The aim is not to make a consumer tracker perfect; it is to understand its blind spots and make its data useful for your routine.

How step counting works
Most fitness trackers use an accelerometer, often alongside a gyroscope and software filters, to identify repeated movement patterns. A wrist tracker does not directly detect every foot strike. It detects movement at your wrist and uses an algorithm to decide whether that movement resembles walking.
Algorithms try to reject isolated movements and recognize rhythmic patterns, but the result remains an estimate. GPS can help estimate an outdoor route and distance during a workout; it does not solve the fundamental problem of detecting individual steps.

This is why a tracker may work well during ordinary walking but behave differently when you push a cart, walk slowly, cook, gesture, or carry something in the tracked hand.
Fitbit describes how incidental wrist movement can affect totals and notes that the displayed count may not update immediately. Garmin similarly explains that its accelerometer uses arm movement associated with walking and that keeping the arm still can cause missed steps. Fitbit’s guidance and Garmin’s support guidance are useful starting points, but exact behavior varies by model.
1. Wear the tracker correctly and consistently
Start with fit and placement before changing software settings.
- Wear the tracker on bare skin where the manufacturer specifies, normally just above the wrist bone.
- Fasten it securely enough that it does not slide or rotate excessively, but not so tightly that it causes discomfort or restricts circulation.
- Use the correct wrist, orientation, and body-location setting in the device or companion app.
- Keep the same wrist and position from day to day when comparing trends.
- Do not repeatedly switch between wrist, pocket, clip, and ankle placement without recording the change.
Some Fitbit devices support both wrist and clip configurations, but the wearing mode must match the actual placement. Check Fitbit’s current instructions for your model.
Garmin recommends correct wearing and, on supported devices, use of the non-dominant wrist. Its non-dominant-wrist guidance and owner’s manual guidance should not be treated as a universal rule for every brand. The correct setting and consistency matter more than assuming one wrist is always best.
2. Choose the wrist that creates fewer false movements
Your dominant hand often performs more incidental movements, such as cooking, cleaning, typing, carrying, and gesturing. Those movements can sometimes resemble walking to a wrist tracker. The non-dominant wrist may therefore reduce some false positives.

However, the non-dominant wrist is not guaranteed to be more accurate for every person or device. If you change wrists, update the setting and understand that historical totals may no longer be directly comparable. For everyday tracking, a consistent setup is usually more useful than constantly searching for a theoretically perfect position.
3. Check settings and profile information
Review the following items in the tracker and its companion app:
- Height, weight, age, and sex, where requested.
- Dominant or non-dominant wrist selection.
- Device orientation.
- Clip, band, pocket, or other body-location mode.
- Phone motion and activity permissions, if the phone contributes to the total.
- Whether multiple watches, phones, or apps are writing steps to the same health platform.
Profile information generally affects distance, stride-length estimates, calories, and activity classification more directly than the raw step-detection process. Correcting your height or weight is useful, but it is not a guaranteed way to calibrate the step sensor.
Also check for duplicate sources in platforms such as Apple Health, Google Health Connect, Samsung Health, or similar services. A watch and phone may both contribute data, or the platform may prioritize one source over another. This can make a total appear too high or make two apps disagree without either device actually counting every step twice.
4. Understand when wrist trackers miss steps
A wrist tracker is most vulnerable when your legs are walking but your tracked arm is not moving naturally. Common examples include:

- Carrying a child, bag, or other object in the tracker arm.
- Holding a phone, handrail, or exercise equipment.
- Walking with one arm immobilized or restricted.
- Walking very slowly, shuffling, or taking irregular steps.
- Taking very short or interrupted walking bouts.
Garmin specifically identifies reduced arm movement as a cause of missed steps. Do not exaggerate your arm swing simply to satisfy the tracker; that changes your normal walking pattern and may be unsafe. Instead, test the device under the conditions that matter to you and consider a different wearing format if those conditions dominate your day.

5. Understand what creates false steps
Extra steps can result from repetitive movements that resemble walking at the wrist. Potential causes include:
- Cooking, chopping, folding laundry, or cleaning.
- Frequent gestures while standing.
- Vehicle vibration, especially on rough roads.
- A loose device that moves repeatedly against the wrist.
- An incorrect clip or body-location setting.
- Duplicate step sources in a phone or health platform.
Fitbit acknowledges that wrist movement during work or cooking can affect totals. A few extra steps are not necessarily evidence of a defective tracker; repeated large counts while sitting or driving are more concerning and deserve troubleshooting.
6. Account for walking speed and gait
Trackers generally perform best during normal, rhythmic walking. Accuracy can decline during very slow walking, short walks, stairs, unusual terrain, limping, shuffling, asymmetrical gait, rehabilitation, neurological conditions, or use of a mobility aid.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Research has found that step-count error varies with placement and gait speed. A study of multiple wearable technologies reported substantially higher average error at slow walking speeds, while reviews of Fitbit devices found that results varied with speed, body placement, age, mobility status, and the reference method used. See the placement and gait-speed study, the CADENCE-adults study, and the systematic review of Fitbit accuracy.
These studies do not establish one universal error rate. Results depend on the exact model, firmware, placement, walking speed, participants, protocol, and comparison standard. A device can be adequate for tracking your own ordinary-day trend while being unsuitable for precise clinical or research measurement.
7. Do not confuse delayed syncing with missed steps
The number shown on your wrist may lag behind the number shown in the companion app. A short walk may not immediately update the on-device total, and a later sync can change the displayed figure.

Before concluding that steps are missing:
- Wait for the walk to finish and allow the device to process the movement.
- Open the companion app and sync it.
- Check the final daily total rather than the number immediately after a short walk.
- Confirm that the device is charged and still paired.
- Restart the device and phone if syncing remains unreliable.
- Install available firmware and app updates.
Battery-saving modes, disabled permissions, pairing interruptions, and software bugs can affect data transfer. Menu names and update procedures vary by model, operating system, country, and software version, so use the manufacturer’s model-specific support page rather than relying on a generic menu path. Fitbit documents delayed updates; other brands have their own procedures.
8. Consider another placement when your routine defeats wrist tracking
If your arm movement does not represent your walking, a different form factor may be a better solution.
| Placement or device | Potential advantage | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Hip or waist | Closer to the body’s center of mass and less dependent on arm swing. | Must be supported by the device or accessory; clothing placement can be inconsistent. |
| Convenient for a phone or dedicated pedometer. | Misses activity when the phone is left behind or carried inconsistently. | |
| Ankle | May help when arm movement is restricted or walking is very slow. | Do not attach a wrist-only smartwatch to your ankle unless the manufacturer explicitly supports it. |
| Clip-on pedometer | Useful for people who want hip or waist placement without a smartwatch. | Provides fewer smart features and can be detached or mispositioned. |
Placement can matter more than brand in some conditions, but no position is best for every device and activity. Use only supported accessories and wearing locations. An unsupported ankle placement can produce misleading data or affect comfort and device operation.
A phone can work well if you carry it consistently in a trouser pocket or near the body’s center. It can also miss steps when it is on a desk, in a bag, or moving between locations. Research has examined how phone position and walking conditions affect step detection; the results do not justify claiming that a phone is always more accurate than a watch. See the smartphone and activity-tracker validity study.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.9. Test your tracker against a manual count
A repeatable personal test is more useful than a generic claim that one brand is “the most accurate.”
- Charge the tracker and sync it.
- Record the current step count.
- Choose a straight, ordinary route.
- Manually count 500 or 1,000 steps.
- Walk at your normal pace while wearing the tracker as usual.
- Sync again and record the increase.
- Repeat on a separate occasion.
If a particular situation causes problems, repeat the test while walking slowly, pushing a cart or stroller, carrying an object, or keeping the tracker arm relatively still. Do not deliberately swing your arm differently from normal.

Calculate the percentage error as follows:
Percentage error = (tracker steps − manually counted steps) ÷ manually counted steps × 100
A positive result means the tracker counted more steps than your manual count; a negative result means it counted fewer. Treat the result as a personal-use estimate, not laboratory certification. Manual counting, interruptions, delayed syncing, and the tracker’s detection threshold can all affect a short test.
Look at repeatability as well as closeness to the manual count. A device that is consistently 5% high may still be useful for tracking your own trends. A device whose error changes dramatically between ordinary and slow walking is telling you that its result depends heavily on activity conditions.
10. When to contact support or replace the device
Contact the manufacturer or consider replacement if the tracker:

- Records large step totals repeatedly while you are sitting or driving.
- Stops recording for long periods despite correct wear, charge, and syncing.
- Produces wildly different results in two otherwise identical tests.
- Has physical damage, a loose band, or a device that no longer sits securely.
- Differs materially from a second method during ordinary walking after settings and syncing have been checked.
For medical, rehabilitation, insurance, or research decisions, use a validated protocol or device recommended by the relevant professional. Consumer trackers should not automatically be treated as medical-grade instruments. A systematic review found that Fitbit step accuracy was not uniformly acceptable across all tested conditions and populations. Read the review.
What to prioritize when buying another device
Do not choose solely from a brand ranking or one laboratory result. Instead, match the device to your routine:
- Supported wearing locations: Check whether it supports wrist, clip, hip, pocket, or ankle use.
- Your normal walking speed: Look for evidence under conditions resembling your own.
- Your problem activities: Consider carts, strollers, mobility aids, carrying, and slow walking.
- Compatibility: Confirm phone, operating-system, region, and health-platform support.
- Consistency: Choose a device you can wear securely every day.
- Data access: Check whether it exports data if you need more than a daily total.
- Battery and comfort: A theoretically capable tracker is not useful if it is frequently removed or uncharged.
A smartwatch is sensible for someone who wants notifications, workouts, and broader health features. A supported clip or hip-worn counter may be better for someone who frequently pushes a stroller or keeps their arms still. A dedicated pedometer can be the simplest choice when step counting is the only requirement. None is a guaranteed fix; the decisive question is whether it can be worn where and how you actually walk.
Brand-specific starting points
- Fitbit: Review the current instructions for wrist versus clip use, incidental arm movement, and delayed updates at Google’s Fitbit help page.
- Garmin: Check its guidance on arm movement, correct wearing, and non-dominant-wrist use at Garmin Support and its non-dominant-wrist article.
- Apple, Samsung, and other brands: Use the current model-specific instructions. Exact settings and supported placements vary, so a generic path copied from another model may be wrong.
The practical verdict
For most people, improve step consistency in this order: secure the tracker correctly, select the right wrist or body-location setting, wear it in the same place every day, keep it charged and synced, and test it at your normal walking speed. Then identify the situations that create undercounts or false counts.
