Open Garmin Connect, tap More → Garmin Devices, select your Garmin product, then open Device Settings or the relevant settings category. Change the option and sync the device so the change can be sent to it. Menu names and available controls vary by model and app layout.
Before you change a setting
- Sign in to the Garmin account associated with the device.
- Turn on Bluetooth and keep the Garmin device near your phone.
- Make sure the device is powered on. A low battery or an inactive connection can prevent a setting from syncing.
Open your Garmin device settings
- Open the Garmin Connect app.
- Tap More in the bottom-right corner.
- Tap Garmin Devices or Garmin Device.
- Select the specific watch, tracker, cycling computer, or other product you want to configure.
- Tap Device Settings, or open the category that contains the setting you need.
Some model manuals show an alternate route: select the device image or device widget, then open Device Settings. Garmin’s support page describes the device list under More → Garmin Device, while manuals document the image/widget route for particular models. Labels can change with app updates. Find the setting you want
Garmin does not expose the same controls on every product. These are examples of places to look; a category may be absent, renamed, or available only on the device itself.
| What you want to change | Possible app category or label |
|---|---|
| Watch face, widgets, shortcuts | Appearance |
| Device alerts, sounds, or alarms | Notifications & Alerts or Sounds & Alerts |
| Phone app notifications sent to the Garmin | Notifications or App Notifications |
| Activity tracking, Move Alert, or Move IQ | Activity Tracking or a model-specific activity category |
| Heart-rate zones | User settings or activity settings |
| Time display | Time Format |
| Which wrist you wear the device on | Wrist Worn On |
| Data recording behavior | Data Recording or a model-specific device category |
| Preferred primary tracker | Preferred Activity Tracker |
Depending on the model, settings can also include language, orientation, goal animations, sleep-time Do Not Disturb, text responses, and automatic Connect IQ app updates. Garmin’s vívoactive 3 manual gives examples of model-specific options, not a feature list guaranteed for every Garmin product. See the vívoactive 3 settings reference.

Manage notifications at the right level
Notification problems can involve three separate controls: alerts generated by the Garmin device, which phone apps Garmin Connect is allowed to forward, and the phone’s operating-system permissions. Check the layer that matches what is missing.
Garmin alerts and device notifications
On compatible products, look under Garmin Connect → Menu → Garmin Devices → [your device] → Notifications & Alerts. Depending on the model, the category can include abnormal heart-rate, goal, high-stress, sleep-score, bedtime, fitness-age, or VO₂ max change alerts. The manual documenting this path is product-specific, so do not assume every alert appears on every device. Garmin Notifications & Alerts manual

Phone-app notifications in Garmin Connect
Garmin documents Menu → Settings → Notifications → App Notifications for managing app notifications on compatible setups, particularly Android. This is distinct from the Garmin device’s own alerts. Garmin app-notification guidance
Phone notification permissions
Garmin Connect cannot override phone-level controls. Check the phone’s notification permissions, Bluetooth access, and any background-activity or battery restrictions. Android and iOS do not expose identical controls; Garmin notes that iOS notification delivery uses Apple’s Notification Center Service. Garmin’s Android and iOS notification information

Sync the device to apply changes
- Exit the settings page after making your changes.
- Keep Bluetooth enabled and the Garmin device close to the phone.
- Allow Garmin Connect to sync. If a sync does not start, use the app’s sync control for the selected device.
- After synchronization completes, check the Garmin device to confirm the setting took effect.
Garmin’s instructions say to leave the settings page and synchronize to apply customized settings. Not every change is immediate: some are sent at the next sync, while others may require a device restart or adjustment on the Garmin itself. vívomove synchronization instructions
Choose the correct device when you have more than one
Open the Garmin Devices list and select the product you intend to change. Settings for one paired product do not necessarily apply to another. Garmin Connect lists compatible sensors separately under Sensors; some heart-rate monitors may instead appear as devices if paired directly with the app rather than through another Garmin product. If a setting is missing
- Confirm the selected product. A setting may exist on one paired device but not another.
- Check other categories. Look for labels such as Notifications & Alerts, Appearance, Activity Profiles, or User Settings.
- Check whether the product supports it. Some controls are model-specific; others are available only on the Garmin device or through the account.
- Confirm the device is paired and active. A device listed as registered but not actively connected may not offer the same controls.
- Allow for menu changes. Garmin can move or rename options as the app and product software change; check the manual for your exact model.
For example, Garmin manuals note that some settings are account-only, while another model’s manual cautions that settings organization can change. Forerunner 35 settings notes · vívoactive 3 manual
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. If Garmin Connect cannot find the device
- Check that you are signed in to the Garmin account used to pair the product.
- Open More → Garmin Device and review the device list, including any Registered to Garmin Connect section.
- Turn on Bluetooth, move the phone closer, and confirm the Garmin device is powered on with adequate battery.
- Close and reopen Garmin Connect, then restart the Garmin device.
- Re-pair only if those checks do not resolve the issue.
A product may be shown under Registered to Garmin Connect if it was paired through Garmin Express first or if Garmin Connect was uninstalled without removing the device beforehand. Avoid deleting the app or removing the product as an initial troubleshooting step, since that can create extra pairing and synchronization work. Garmin’s device-list troubleshooting details
