How to measure your wrist for a watch

Place a soft measuring tape just behind your wrist bone, at the spot where you plan to wear the watch.

Wrap it snugly around your wrist without pulling it tight. Record the circumference in millimeters, centimeters, or inches.

If you do not have a flexible tape, wrap a strip of paper around the same spot. Mark where it overlaps, straighten the strip, and measure it with a ruler.

Circumference is useful to record when comparing watches, but it does not directly show how far the watch will extend across the top of your wrist.
What 28 mm tells you—and what it leaves out
The 28 mm figure is the case diameter, not the watch’s full footprint. A watch’s fit also depends on its lug-to-lug length—the distance from the tip of one lug to the tip of the other—and on its shape, thickness, and strap width. A 28 mm label alone cannot determine whether an unspecified watch will fit your wrist.

Watch Station’s official printable case-fit guides include 28 mm among their sizing illustrations. That shows a size reference, not that every 28 mm watch will suit every wrist.

Compare lug-to-lug length with wrist width
Find the exact model’s lug-to-lug measurement in its specifications. Then measure the flat width across the top of your wrist where the watch will sit. Victorinox advises that lug-to-lug length should be at or below wrist width; treat this as practical guidance, not a universal fit standard. If the lugs extend beyond the wrist’s flat area, the watch may look or sit too large.

Consider thickness, shape, and strap width
Two watches with the same case diameter can wear differently. Case thickness affects how much the watch stands off the wrist; case shape changes how its dimensions are distributed; and strap width contributes to its overall appearance. Personal preference matters, too: some wearers prefer a compact look, while others like a watch that occupies more of the wrist.
Compare specific watches consistently
When choosing between models, gather the same measurements for each rather than relying on diameter alone:

Use your wrist circumference as a sizing reference, and compare lug-to-lug length with your wrist’s flat width. If you can, try the watch on. A single product photo is not enough to establish how an unspecified model will look on your wrist.
