Measure your wrist circumference where the watch will sit, just behind the wrist bone, then compare the watch’s lug-to-lug length with the flat width across the top of your wrist. Circumference helps narrow your starting point; wrist width and the watch’s full dimensions tell you more about whether it will actually fit.
Measure your wrist circumference
Wrap a soft tape measure around your wrist just behind the wrist bone, at the position where you plan to wear the watch. Keep it comfortable rather than pulling it tight, and record the measurement in millimeters, centimeters, or inches. Victorinox’s fit guide recommends measuring at this spot and recording the circumference.

If you do not have a flexible tape, wrap a strip of paper around your wrist, mark where it overlaps, then lay it flat against a ruler and measure the length. A soft tape is convenient, but you do not need to buy one to get a useful measurement.
Measure wrist width for a better fit check
Circumference is not the same as width. Two wrists with the same circumference can have different shapes, so circumference alone cannot show whether a watch’s lugs will extend past the sides of your wrist.

Measure the flat width across the top of your wrist, where the watch case will sit. Garmin’s size-selection tool asks for a horizontal width measurement 2.5 cm above the wrist bone and previews how different case sizes look against that width. Its listed case sizes are tool options, not a recommended size range.
Compare the watch’s dimensions with your wrist
Lug-to-lug length: check for overhang
Lug-to-lug is the distance from the tip of the top lug to the tip of the bottom lug, measured along the direction of the strap. Compare it with the flat width across your wrist: as a practical guideline, the lugs should not extend beyond that width. Victorinox gives the same general rule in its watch-fit guide. Lug shape and how the case curves around the wrist can affect the result, so treat the measurement as a screening check rather than a guarantee.

Case diameter: understand what the millimeters describe
Case diameter describes the case’s width across the face, generally excluding the crown. Esslinger’s watch case guide defines it as the measurement perpendicular to the lugs, not including the crown. Diameter gives you a sense of the watch’s visual presence, but it does not tell you how far its lugs reach or how comfortably it will sit.
Victorinox offers 38–42 mm as a broad case-diameter range that suits most wrists. It is a starting reference from the brand, not a population statistic, a personalized recommendation, or a universal fit rule.

Thickness and strap width: account for comfort and balance
Case thickness can affect how a watch feels on the wrist and whether it clears a shirt cuff. Strap width should match the lugs; strap proportions also affect how balanced the watch looks and feels. When comparing watches, consider these alongside lug-to-lug length and diameter rather than choosing by diameter alone.

A practical way to choose between case sizes
- Record circumference. Measure where the watch will sit, just behind the wrist bone, using a soft tape or a paper strip and ruler.
- Record wrist width. Measure across the flat top of the wrist at the case position.
- Check lug-to-lug first. Compare the watch’s lug span with wrist width to screen for overhang.
- Consider diameter and thickness. Use diameter to judge visual presence and thickness to assess comfort and sleeve clearance.
- Check strap proportions. Make sure the strap matches the lugs and feels comfortable.
- Try it on if possible. Use a printable guide for scale, but judge the real watch on your wrist before deciding.
