Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteTo move an Apple Watch to a new iPhone with the least risk of losing data, keep the old iPhone, back it up, and restore the new iPhone from that backup. Check that Health is syncing with iCloud or make an encrypted computer backup, then follow the transfer prompt or finish pairing in the Apple Watch app. Do not erase or trade in the old iPhone until you have checked the watch and its data.
Apple says that backing up an iPhone also backs up its Apple Watch. If the old iPhone is unavailable, you may need to erase the watch and restore its latest available backup; changes made since that backup may be lost.
Before you begin
Have your Apple Account password and Apple Watch passcode ready. Connect both iPhones to Wi-Fi, and make sure the watch and new iPhone each have at least 50 percent charge. Update the old iPhone and watch to the newest versions available for them; Apple notes that updates can take several minutes to an hour. See Apple’s Apple Watch transfer guide for current instructions.
- Keep the old iPhone. Do not erase, sell, trade in, or give it away before the watch is paired and you have checked your data.
- Update both devices. Install the newest versions available for the old iPhone and Apple Watch.
- Protect Health and Activity data. For an iCloud workflow, check that Health syncing is on. For a computer backup, enable encryption: Apple says an unencrypted backup will not transfer Health and Activity data from the iPhone or Apple Watch.
- Make a fresh backup. Back up the old iPhone to iCloud or a computer before setting up the new iPhone.
Choose a backup and migration route
| Route | Health and Activity data | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| iCloud backup and sync | Check that Health syncing is enabled. | Set up the new iPhone from the latest backup. Some iCloud data may take days to appear. |
| Computer backup | Use an encrypted backup. | An unencrypted computer backup will not transfer Health and Activity data. |
| Quick Start direct transfer | Use with a backup workflow that protects Health data. | Keep both phones near each other and plugged into power; wait for the direct transfer to finish on both devices. Transfer time depends on network conditions and the amount of data. |
Apple’s instructions for iPhone migration explain Quick Start and transfer options. For computer backups, see Apple’s guidance on transferring data with Finder, Apple Devices, or iTunes.

1. Back up the old iPhone
Turn on Health syncing in iCloud or make an encrypted computer backup, then create a fresh iPhone backup. Leave the old iPhone intact and nearby.
2. Set up the new iPhone from the backup
Follow the iPhone setup prompts and choose the most recent available iCloud or encrypted computer backup from the old iPhone. If using Quick Start direct transfer, keep both phones close together and connected to power until the transfer finishes.
3. Accept the Apple Watch transfer prompt
If prompted to use the Apple Watch, unlock it, put it on your wrist, and tap Continue. Keep it close to the new iPhone.
4. Finish pairing in the Watch app
If no transfer prompt appears, open the Apple Watch app on the new iPhone. Keep the watch unlocked and on your wrist nearby, then follow the onscreen instructions.

If the old iPhone is broken, lost, erased, or unavailable
If the watch remains paired to an unavailable iPhone, Apple’s recovery process may require erasing the watch. Set up the new iPhone and sign in to iCloud, then pair the watch and restore its latest available backup. If no backup exists, set it up as new.
Activity, Workouts, and settings changed since the last backup may be lost. Health and Activity data synced to iCloud can return on devices using the same Apple Account, but iCloud does not store Activity Sharing data. If the old iPhone is unavailable and no usable backup exists, Apple says Health and Activity content cannot be recovered.
When and how to unpair the watch correctly
If the new iPhone asks you to Start Pairing and the old iPhone is available, Apple’s instruction is to unpair the watch and set it up again:
- Keep the old iPhone and Apple Watch close together.
- Open the Apple Watch app on the old iPhone.
- Tap My Watch > All Watches.
- Tap the information button next to the watch.
- Tap Unpair Apple Watch and follow the prompts.
Unpairing through the paired iPhone erases the watch and removes Activation Lock. If you erase the watch directly from its Settings app, Activation Lock remains on; you will need the Apple Account and password used to set it up.

Troubleshooting pairing problems
The new iPhone cannot find the watch
- Keep the watch and iPhone close together.
- Make sure Airplane Mode is off on both devices.
- On the iPhone, turn on Wi-Fi and Bluetooth.
- Restart both devices and try again.
Apple’s pairing troubleshooting steps provide further help.
Pairing is stuck on the Apple logo or animation
If the watch is stuck on a black screen with the white Apple logo, press and hold the Digital Crown and side button together until it restarts. Then follow Apple’s reset and pairing instructions. If the pairing animation remains for several minutes, consult Apple’s troubleshooting guide before resetting; you may need to restore the watch from a backup afterward.
The new iPhone shows “Start Pairing”
If the old iPhone is available, unpair the watch through its Apple Watch app, then pair it with the new iPhone and restore from a backup when prompted.
Health or Activity data is missing
Check that Health syncing is enabled on the old and new iPhones under Settings > [your name] > iCloud. If you used a computer, confirm that the backup was encrypted. If iCloud was not used, Apple recommends making a fresh iCloud or encrypted computer backup from the old phone, restoring the new phone, and pairing again. If the old phone is unavailable and no backup can be made, Apple says the data cannot be recovered.

Activation Lock appears
Enter the Apple Account and password originally used to set up the watch. Erasing the watch without unpairing it through the paired iPhone does not remove Activation Lock. If you bought the watch used and the previous owner’s account is requested, that owner must remove the watch from their account. See Apple’s Activation Lock guidance.
The safest final sequence
- Update the old iPhone and Apple Watch.
- Enable Health syncing in iCloud or prepare an encrypted computer backup.
- Back up the old iPhone.
- Set up the new iPhone from the latest backup or use Quick Start.
- Accept the watch transfer prompt or finish pairing in the Apple Watch app.
- Restore the newest available watch backup and allow synchronization to finish.
- Check Health, Activity, and other important information before erasing the old iPhone.
FAQ
Do I need to erase my Apple Watch before pairing it with a new iPhone?
Usually not when the old iPhone is available and the transfer prompt works. If the new iPhone asks you to Start Pairing, Apple instructs you to unpair the watch and set it up again.
Will my Apple Watch Health and Activity data transfer?
Use iCloud syncing or an encrypted computer backup to protect Health and Activity data. An unencrypted computer backup will not transfer it. Changes made after the latest backup may be lost.
What if I already erased the old iPhone?
Pair the watch with the new iPhone and restore its latest available backup. If the watch was erased directly rather than unpaired through the old iPhone, Activation Lock may still require the original Apple Account and password.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Why does my new iPhone say “Start Pairing”?
If the old iPhone is available, unpair the watch through that iPhone’s Apple Watch app, then pair it with the new iPhone and restore from a backup.
How long does the transfer take?
Apple does not give a typical duration in its instructions. Transfer time depends on network conditions and the amount of data, so keep devices near each other and plugged into power while migration runs.
