Plan for two kinds of photographs: a clear view of the whole car and closer views of details that make it distinctive. Before you go, check the concours’s current photography and access rules; policies vary, and a camera, tripod, or drone that is allowed at one event may be restricted at another. At the show, give judges and other visitors room, and wait for an unobstructed view rather than interrupting the event.

Look at the specific concours’s current visitor guidance before packing. The Atlanta Motoring Festival & Concours d’Elegance, for example, permits cameras and personal photography, while its guidance also asks visitors to respect media and other patrons. If you are photographing on assignment or intend to publish coverage, check whether you need media credentials. Arizona Concours d’Elegance says its credentials are for working journalists and photographers covering the event for reputable media organizations. Do not assume that professional-looking equipment is welcome. Concours d’Elegance Singapore permits photography but prohibits professional equipment and tripods at its indoor experience, and asks visitors not to disturb others. Leave the drone at home unless the event explicitly allows it. Atlanta Motoring Festival lists drones among prohibited items, and Arizona Concours prohibits aerial drones. Arizona also restricts garage access unless media are accompanied by an official representative. Rules can change, so check the event’s own current policy rather than relying on another concours’s guidance.
Make a simple coverage plan: whole car, then details
Start with a photograph that shows the entire vehicle. Then look for closer views that help convey its design and condition, such as distinctive trim, controls, badges, or interior details when they are visible without crossing barriers or touching the car. The National Association of Automobile Clubs of Canada recommends whole-vehicle and close-up photographs as restoration documentation. Choose a clear view without taking over the space
When a car is surrounded, be patient and wait for an opening where possible. Avoid blocking other visitors’ views or positioning yourself where judges are examining the vehicle. Arizona Concours specifically asks photographers not to interfere with judging, and Atlanta Motoring Festival asks patrons to respect media and one another. A few moments of waiting can yield a cleaner frame without disrupting anyone.
Adapt focus and exposure to the scene
There is no single ISO, shutter speed, or aperture that is right for every concours photograph. The useful choice depends on available light, whether the car or people are moving, and the camera or phone you are using. In bright outdoor light, pay attention to reflections and highlights on paint and chrome; in shade or indoors, check that the car is in focus and the image is not blurred. Review a frame when practical and adjust for the conditions rather than treating fixed settings as a universal recipe.

You do not need a particular camera model to follow this approach. A camera with a standard zoom lens is one optional setup, not a requirement established by concours rules or restoration guidance. Respect the cars, judges, and other visitors
- Do not touch a vehicle or cross a barrier to improve a composition.
- Do not block judges while they inspect a car; wait until their work is finished.
- Leave room for other visitors and photographers, and avoid holding a position when others are waiting.
- Follow staff directions and any posted limits on garages, stages, or other restricted areas.
- Do not fly a drone unless the event’s current rules explicitly permit it.
