There is no single sanitizing method that is safe for every wristwatch. First check the care instructions for your exact watch model and band: water resistance does not automatically mean it is safe to rinse, soak, or expose to soap or disinfectants. For routine care, a gentle wipe with a clean, soft, lint-free cloth followed by thorough drying is a common starting point.
Cleaning, sanitizing and disinfecting are not the same
Cleaning removes dirt and many germs; sanitizing and disinfecting use products or processes intended to reduce or inactivate germs. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says that, in most situations, cleaning surfaces with soap and water removes most germs. It advises cleaning before sanitizing or disinfecting and following product labels. Those general recommendations do not override a watch maker’s restrictions: a product suitable for a household surface may damage a watch finish, seal, sensor, or band. For everyday watch care, remove sweat, sunscreen, lotion, dust, and residue using the method approved for your particular watch. Use a disinfectant only if the manufacturer explicitly permits that specific product on the watch and band materials.
How to clean your watch safely
- Check the model and band instructions. Identify the exact watch and band material before choosing a method. If the band detaches, check whether the manufacturer recommends removing it. Apple, for example, says to turn off an Apple Watch, remove it from its charger, and remove leather bands before cleaning. Follow your own maker’s instructions rather than treating this example as universal. Apple’s cleaning instructions
- Wipe the watch body gently. Use a clean, soft, nonabrasive lint-free or microfiber cloth. Lightly dampen it with fresh water only if the model’s instructions allow it. Do not force moisture into openings, buttons, the crown, speakers, or sensors. Do not immerse the watch in cleaning agents; TAG Heuer also cautions against immersion. TAG Heuer cleaning guidance
- Clean the band according to its material. Treat a removable band separately, and do not transfer instructions from one material to another. The material-specific guidance below explains why.
- Dry everything before wearing it again. Gently dry the case and band with a soft cloth, then let any damp band air-dry fully. Make sure your wrist and skin are dry as well.
- Disinfect only when explicitly permitted. Check the maker’s approved product, surfaces, and band list before using a wipe or solution. Do not assume that a disinfectant safe for the case is also safe for the band.
Choose the method by band material

When is it safe to use a disinfectant wipe?
Only when the manufacturer names the product and permits it for the exact watch surfaces and band. Apple’s guidance, published March 12, 2026, allows gentle use of 70 percent isopropyl alcohol wipes, 75 percent ethyl alcohol wipes, or Clorox Disinfecting Wipes on specified Apple Watch exterior surfaces and named bands: Solo Loop, Sport Band, Nike Sport Band, Ocean Band, and metal band. Apple says not to use these wipes on fabric or leather bands and warns against products containing bleach or hydrogen peroxide. This is an Apple-specific allowance, not a general rule for watches. Water resistance does not settle the cleaning question
A water-resistance rating is not a universal permission to rinse or immerse a watch. The case, seals, openings, finish, band, and manufacturer’s instructions all affect what cleaning is appropriate. For example, Citizen Global says running water to remove dirt from the case requires a rating of at least 5 bar (“W.R.5BAR,” etc.) in its guidance, while instructing users to protect the case when washing straps. TAG Heuer advises against immersion. Apple permits lightly running warm fresh water for specified debris on Apple Watch and the Digital Crown, but says not to submerge the watch in cleaning agents. Smartwatch sensors and skin need attention too
Sweat, sunscreen, lotion, and other buildup on the back of a smartwatch can affect sensor function. Apple notes that readings may also be affected when the watch or skin is not clean and dry. Samsung advises cleaning its watch body after contact with water, sweat, oil, or foreign material using a soft, clean cloth and no chemicals or detergents.
