Balazs Ferenczi chose the Grand Seiko SBGA439 after considering MING’s 17.09, trying one on, and later seeing Grand Seiko watches during a Tokyo trip. His choice was personal: he wanted a modern, time-only watch that could move between casual and dressier settings, and the SBGA439’s look and feel suited him. The story is useful as a way to compare the two watches on fit, movement, and style—not as proof that one is better for everyone.
What Ferenczi wanted in an everyday watch
Ferenczi was looking for a modern watch without a chronograph or rotating bezel. The brief was versatility: something he could wear casually but that would also look at home with dressier clothes. The MING 17.09 made his shortlist, and he tried one on through a friend.

His interest shifted toward Grand Seiko after a Tokyo trip that included the Seiko Museum and a Grand Seiko boutique, as well as seeing a friend’s SBGA373. He narrowed his Grand Seiko options to the SBGA439 and SBGA375, then preferred the 439. Ferenczi also mentioned an Instagram poll in his original account; a later follow-up clarified that the poll was not the reason he bought the Grand Seiko. His sequence was, in effect, “this first, then that.”
How the SBGA439 and MING 17.09 compare

MING 17.09 operating guide. |
| Bracelet or strap adjustment | Ferenczi initially struggled to size the bracelet because its clasp lacked micro-adjustment, but eventually found a comfortable fit. This is his experience with his example, not a guarantee of fit for another wrist. Ferenczi’s account, February 16, 2023. | The cited sources do not establish comparable adjustment details for the 17.09. MING 17.09 operating guide. |
| Price context | Ferenczi reported paying €4,800 and cited €5,000 at the time of his February 16, 2023 article. Grand Seiko’s US notice set MSRP before tax at USD 4,800 through October 31, 2024, and USD 5,000 from November 1, 2024. Its Canadian page lists CAD 6,800; that is a regional listing, not a universal or guaranteed current price. The movement figures are manufacturer specifications, not results from a side-by-side accuracy test. The reserve figures are useful for understanding the watches’ stated running time away from the wrist, but they do not establish which watch will suit a particular owner better.

What tipped the decision toward the SBGA439
Ferenczi’s choice came down to preference after he had more direct exposure to Grand Seiko. The SBGA439 appealed to him over the SBGA375, and he found the bracelet comfortable once sized. The midnight-blue dial and restrained, time-only layout matched the role he had in mind: a single watch that could work across different settings.

What to check before choosing between them
- Try the case on if possible. The SBGA439’s listed dimensions provide a starting point, but wrist shape and how the lugs sit matter more than diameter alone.
- Check bracelet or strap adjustment. If you are buying the SBGA439 on its bracelet, consider whether its sizing range can give you a comfortable fit without clasp micro-adjustment.
- Decide which design you want to wear. The available evidence records Ferenczi’s preference; it does not establish an objective design winner.
- Compare local prices at the time of purchase. Prices vary by market and date, and the US notice is historical rather than a statement of today’s worldwide pricing.
For Ferenczi, the SBGA439 delivered the mix he wanted. MING’s 17.09 remains a legitimate alternative for someone drawn to it, but the cited specifications and one buyer’s account do not support declaring an overall winner.
