A moon-phase watch shows where the Moon is in its repeating cycle, from new moon to full moon and back again. To read it, find the moon image or pointer, then use the dial’s own labels or index: displays vary, so the same shape or position may not mean the same thing on every watch.
What the moon-phase display shows
The indication represents the Moon’s position in the cycle from one new moon to the next. In a common design, a disc bearing moon imagery moves behind an aperture, revealing a changing portion of the image. Other displays work differently: TAG Heuer describes the Carrera Astronomer as a rotating display with indicators and a seven-phase arc, where the indicator aligns with labels identifying the phase. How to identify the phase
Use the visible shape and the dial’s markings together. The main named phases are new moon, first quarter, full moon and last quarter; crescent and gibbous phases fall between them. “Waxing” means the illuminated part is growing, while “waning” means it is shrinking.
- Locate the moon image, display window or pointer, and look for an index or phase labels on the dial.
- Match the visible shape to its place in the sequence: new moon, waxing crescent, first quarter, waxing gibbous, full moon, waning gibbous, last quarter, waning crescent.
- Follow the watch’s own labels or pointer where provided. A traditional aperture may show only the exposed part of a moon disc rather than naming the phase.
- If comparing the display with the Moon in the sky, account for your hemisphere and viewing orientation; the graphic may not appear oriented the same way as the Moon above you.
How long the cycle lasts—and what that means for accuracy
A lunation, the interval from one new moon to the next, is about 29.5 days rather than exactly 30. IWC publishes a more precise duration of 29 days, 12 hours, 44 minutes and 2.88 seconds; the publication year is not stated on its page. IWC explains that a reduction gear adjusts a nominal 30-day mechanism toward the lunar cycle, with the gearing and wheel proportions determining the approximation. TAG Heuer describes its display using the rounded figure of a 29.5-day cycle. These figures describe the cited explanations, not a universal accuracy specification for every moon-phase watch. Setting or correcting the indication
There is no safe universal adjustment sequence: instructions depend on the watch and its mechanism. Longines advises owners to consult the specific instruction manual before adjustment and warns against tampering during transition periods. Longines’ setting guidance.
Patek Philippe’s celestial-watch guide provides a model-specific example: wind the watch by hand, align the full moon with a reference index, then advance the indication by a calculated number of revolutions and graduations. That sequence applies to the references covered by its guide, not to moon-phase watches generally.
