How to Read a Moonphase Display on a Watch

A practical guide to reading moonphase watch displays, recognizing the lunar cycle, and correcting the complication safely using your model’s manual.

Read a moonphase display by identifying the visible Moon shape, then checking whether it is waxing (growing) or waning (shrinking). On a traditional watch, the Moon disc moves behind a dial opening; other designs use a visible disc, pointers or labels. The layout varies, so left-right position alone is not a reliable guide.

What a moonphase display shows

A moonphase complication tracks the Moon’s cycle from one new moon to the next. On a common aperture display, a shaped disc rotates beneath an opening in the dial. The opening reveals a changing portion of the disc, representing the Moon’s apparent illuminated shape.

The sequence is new moon, waxing crescent, first quarter, waxing gibbous, full moon, waning gibbous, last quarter and waning crescent, returning to new moon. Crescent and gibbous describe the shapes between the quarter and new or full moon landmarks.

How to identify the phase

Start with the amount of the Moon shown

  • New moon: The lunar disc is hidden in the aperture, so little or none of the Moon appears illuminated.
  • Crescent: A narrow sliver is visible.
  • First or last quarter: About half of the visible lunar disc appears illuminated.
  • Gibbous: More than half is visible, but the Moon is not yet full.
  • Full moon: The disc appears fully illuminated in the opening.

These are visual readings of the display, not precise astronomical measurements. The shape and framing depend on the watch’s design.

Decide whether it is waxing or waning

Waxing means the apparent illuminated shape is growing; waning means it is shrinking. A phase display’s left-right orientation is not universal: the view can differ between the Northern and Southern Hemispheres. Read the shape and its position in the cycle together rather than relying on which side of the aperture is bright. TAG Heuer explains the hemisphere difference in its overview of the Carrera Astronomer.

Not every watch uses an aperture

Some watches keep the lunar disc fully visible and use pointers or a labeled scale instead of showing a changing cutout. For example, TAG Heuer’s Carrera Astronomer uses a visible rotating disc and twin pointers aligned with a seven-phase graphic; associated text identifies the phase. That reading method applies to this design, not to moonphase watches as a whole. See the manufacturer’s description.

Digital features are different again. Garmin says the Moon Phase glance on compatible watches can show the named phase and a condensed timeline, as well as moonrise and moonset. Availability and navigation depend on the watch model. Garmin describes the feature.

Why the display may drift from the real Moon

A lunation—the interval from new moon to new moon—is not exactly 30 days. IWC gives its length as 29 days, 12 hours, 44 minutes and 2.88 seconds. Mechanical watches approximate this cycle through gearing, and the precision depends on the design. That astronomical figure is not a claim that every watch reproduces the cycle without error. IWC explains the lunation and gearing.

Cycle descriptions can also be rounded: TAG Heuer describes a 29.5-day cycle in its 2025 explanation, while the more precise value cited by IWC is 29 days, 12 hours, 44 minutes and 2.88 seconds. Neither number establishes the long-term accuracy of an individual watch.

How to set or correct a moonphase

There is no universal sequence of crown or button operations. Use the manual for your exact watch, including its instructions about when it is safe to adjust the complication and which corrector to use. Patek Philippe’s guidance directs owners to the user guide and gives one example of a correction method: position the lunar disc at full moon, count the elapsed days since the last full moon (including the setting day), then advance the indicator by that number of days. A manual for one Patek Philippe model specifies using the stylus supplied with that watch on its correction pusher. These details should not be transferred to another model. Consult Patek Philippe’s setting guidance and the manual for your watch.
