The hand moves across a limited arc, then jumps back to the scale’s starting point to begin another cycle. The cycle may be 30 seconds or another interval, so use the watch’s own markings rather than assuming it counts to 60.
How to read the seconds
- Find the seconds scale. Look for a short arc, fan-shaped sector, or small subdial marked for seconds. The seconds indication may be separate from the central hour and minute hands.
- Locate the start of the scale. Follow the printed numbers or marks in their displayed order toward the final mark.
- Read the hand’s tip. Match its position to the nearest marking, just as you would on a conventional seconds track. Follow the watch’s actual labels; the scale may not run from 0 to 60.
- Begin again after the reset. When the hand reaches the end of its arc and snaps back, it has started a new cycle. It is not counting backward along the scale.
The Fondation Haute Horlogerie defines a retrograde hand as one that moves across a scale and returns immediately to zero at the end of its cycle (Fondation Haute Horlogerie’s retrograde glossary). Baume & Mercier’s instructions likewise describe its seconds hand moving backward after reaching the final mark and beginning a new cycle (Baume & Mercier watch instructions).

Why the scale and position vary
Retrograde seconds displays do not have one universal location or cycle length. For example, H. Moser & Cie.’s Pioneer Retrograde Seconds reference 3250 places the display at 6 o’clock and resets it every 30 seconds, according to its October 2024 manual (Pioneer Retrograde Seconds reference 3250 manual). Its Endeavour Retrograde Seconds reference 1252-1200 also uses a 30-second arc; the product page contrasts this with a conventional seconds hand that makes one rotation every 60 seconds (H. Moser & Cie. Endeavour Retrograde Seconds). Breguet’s Tradition Seconde Rétrograde 7097 instead places its small-seconds display at 10 o’clock (Breguet Tradition Seconde Rétrograde 7097).

The reset motion alone does not establish the cycle duration.

How it differs from other seconds displays
A conventional seconds hand usually travels around a full circular track. A retrograde hand follows a bounded path and visibly returns to its origin. Casio describes the typical retrograde form as a hand moving back and forth over a fan-shaped dial (Casio Europe’s retrograde hand glossary).
On a crowded dial, do not identify a hand by appearance alone: a chronograph elapsed-seconds hand or another pointer may look similar. Use the scale associated with the hand and, if needed, the maker’s hand diagram or manual. Baume & Mercier’s instructions, for instance, identify the seconds hand on its retrograde-seconds display.

If the hand does not reset as expected
The cycle and mechanism depend on the specific watch, and the cited maker instructions do not establish one universal fault diagnosis. Check that model’s manual for its normal operation. If the hand stays at one point or fails to return as described, contact the manufacturer or an authorized service provider; do not force the hand or experiment with crown and pusher settings.
