To measure average speed, start the Sinn 103 chronograph at a distance marker, travel exactly one kilometre, then stop it. Read the number on the tachymeter scale aligned with the chronograph seconds hand: on the Sinn 103 St Ty Hd, that number is average speed in kilometres per hour (km/h). Sinn’s example is 40 seconds for one kilometre, which reads 90 km/h.
How to take a tachymeter reading
- Choose two markers exactly one kilometre apart, and be ready to start at the first.
- Press chronograph push-piece A as you pass the first marker.
- Press A again as you pass the second marker. The chronograph seconds hand stops.
- Read the tachymeter value where the stopped seconds hand points. For the 103 St Ty Hd, this is the average speed in km/h over that kilometre.
For example, if the hand stops at 40 seconds, read 90: the average speed was 90 km/h. Sinn’s instructions state that the scale on the 103 St Ty Hd can be used to read average speeds between 60 and 600 km/h. Sinn 103 St Ty Hd Instructions for Use

Why the scale gives speed
An hour contains 3,600 seconds. Covering one kilometre in a measured time therefore gives a speed in kilometres per hour by dividing 3,600 by the elapsed seconds. At 40 seconds, 3,600 ÷ 40 = 90 km/h. The tachymeter scale puts that calculation on the dial so you can read the result without doing the division.

The reading depends on timing a known distance. The dial’s number is not a valid speed for an arbitrary stretch whose length you do not know. For a distance other than one kilometre, the elapsed time must be adjusted for the distance before treating the result as a per-hour rate; the simple one-kilometre reading method does not apply unchanged.

Using the chronograph pushers
In the 103 St Ty Hd instructions, push-piece A starts timing, stops it on the next press, and resumes it on a further press. Push-piece B resets the chronograph hands. Check the instructions for your 103 variant
Not every Sinn 103 necessarily has the same pusher construction. Sinn’s 103 model-series instructions describe variants with screwable push-pieces: those pushers must be loosened counter-clockwise before use and fastened again afterward. Check the manual for your exact reference before operating the chronograph; do not assume a procedure or scale range from another 103 model applies to yours.
