How to Read a Wandering-Hours Watch

Read a wandering-hours watch by finding the hour numeral traveling through its marked zone and matching its position to the watch’s minute scale.

Find the hour numeral moving through the dial’s marked reading zone, then use its position against that watch’s minute scale to read the time. The numeral may serve as the minute pointer, but layouts vary, so follow the labels and index on the specific watch rather than assuming it reads like a conventional dial.

How to read the time

  1. Find the reading zone. Look for the curved or arched minute scale, or another clearly marked area used to read the display. Its shape and placement depend on the watch.
  2. Identify the active hour numeral. This is the numeral currently traveling through the reading zone. On some watches it points directly to the minute scale; other layouts may use a separate pointer or designated scale.
  3. Read the minutes from the indicated position. Match the numeral or the watch’s designated minute pointer to the minute markings. Do not assume that every model uses the same orientation or a conventional minute hand.
  4. Follow the changing display. As the active numeral completes its path, another hour numeral takes its place. The display moves continuously rather than keeping the hour numeral in one fixed window.

For example, the British Museum documents an approximately 1700 pocket watch whose hour numeral appears in an aperture and whose position against the surrounding minute markings gives the time. The museum reads the displayed time as 5:08. That aperture is one historical arrangement; modern wristwatches may use a different dial layout.

What moves on different wandering-hours watches?

Audemars Piguet Starwheel

Audemars Piguet describes the Starwheel as using a central rotor that completes a revolution in three hours and carries three aluminum discs. The discs rotate on their own axes, and each has four hour digits that take turns moving to the arched minute scale. The company says it reintroduced the system in 1991 as the Starwheel. These are the manufacturer’s descriptions of its own history and design, not a general specification for all wandering-hours watches. Audemars Piguet’s Starwheel explanation also describes its Code 11.59 Starwheel and Calibre 4310 with an added module.

DWISS S1

DWISS describes the S1-blue as using two satellite discs to carry odd and even hours; the current hour numeral points to the minute scale, and seconds appear on a central disc. Its product page lists a 40 mm case, La Joux-Perret G100 Soigné automatic movement, 68-hour power reserve and 10 ATM / 100 m water resistance. The page displayed CHF 2,200 when reviewed; price, availability and configuration can change. Those are specifications for this particular model, not requirements for the complication. Wandering hours versus jump hours

They are different display behaviors. In the cited specialist comparison, a jump-hour watch shows the hour in a fixed window and changes the numeral at the hour, with minutes displayed separately. A wandering-hours watch moves hour numerals across the dial through a reading zone. If the hour sits in a stationary window, that alone does not make the display wandering hours. WatchTime’s explanation of wandering-hour and jump-hour displays.

Where the design came from

The British Museum’s record describes an approximately 1700 silver, pair-cased verge watch with a wandering-hour dial: an hour numeral appears in a semicircular aperture, and its position against minute markings indicates the time. This shows why the reading principle matters more than the dial’s resemblance to a modern wristwatch. British Museum object record.

Audemars Piguet’s Heritage and Museum Director, Sébastian Vivas, says on the company’s page: “Invented in 1655 thanks to a request by Pope Alexander VII, who suffered from insomnia that was exacerbated by the ticking of his clock, the wandering hours complication was rediscovered by Audemars Piguet in 1991 and combines history, technical challenges, design and poetry.” This is the company’s published account of the complication’s history. What to check if the time is hard to read

  • Locate the dial’s marked minute scale or other designated reading index before interpreting the moving numeral.
  • Check whether the hour numeral itself indicates the minutes or whether a separate pointer does so.
  • Use the markings on that watch rather than importing the reading direction from another wandering-hours design.
  • If the display is in a fixed hour window and changes at the hour, it is the jump-hour behavior described above, not the moving-numeral layout.
