On a true 24-hour dial, the main hour hand makes one full revolution per day. Read the hour where it points on the watch’s 24-hour scale, then read minutes from the minute hand. Because numeral placement varies, use the markings on your watch—not the assumption that the top of the dial means noon.
First check what kind of 24-hour display the watch has
The phrase “24-hour dial” can describe two different layouts. In the first, the main hour hand travels around the entire dial once every 24 hours. In the second, ordinary 12-hour hands show the main time and an additional 24-hour hand or subdial gives an AM/PM indication or another time-zone reading. These are not read the same way.

| Layout | What shows the hour | Where to read it |
|---|---|---|
| True 24-hour main dial | The main hour hand completes one revolution per day. | The dial’s 24-hour scale. Number placement and orientation vary by watch. Watch Wiki’s 24-hour dial reference explains the full-dial distinction and marking variations. |
| 12-hour dial with an extra 24-hour hand | The standard hour hand reads the main time; the extra hand may indicate AM or PM or show a second time zone. | The scale assigned to the extra hand: it may be on the dial, a subdial, or a bezel, depending on the model. Grand Seiko’s Cal. 9F86 instructions describe AM/PM and dual-time uses. |
| GMT-style layout | Conventional hands show local time; a separate hand indicates reference time over 24 hours. | The matching 24-hour bezel or dial scale. In the Rolex GMT-Master II example, the bezel triangle is aligned at 12 o’clock to read reference time on its 24-hour graduations. Rolex’s model explanation describes this arrangement. |
A hand’s appearance alone does not tell you what time it represents. Identify its purpose and match it to the scale intended for it. A manufacturer’s manual is the best guide when the layout is unfamiliar; hand functions can depend on the model or operating mode. Casio’s module 5519 manual, for example, describes A-side and P-side indications for its 24-hour hand.
How to read a true 24-hour main dial
- Find the main hour hand. Confirm from the dial markings or the watch’s instructions that this is a full 24-hour display, rather than a conventional 12-hour dial with an extra hand.
- Read the hour against the 24-hour scale. The hand points to the hour of the day directly. You do not need to guess whether the time is AM or PM.
- Read minutes from the minute hand. Use the minute markings, not a second scale or bezel unless the watch’s design assigns it that purpose.
- Combine the readings. For example, if the hour hand points to 16 and the minute hand points to 30, the displayed time is 16:30, or 4:30 p.m.
Do not assume the hour numbers follow the orientation of a conventional 12-hour clock. The numerals and their positions can vary, so follow the printed scale on the actual face. The abbreviation “24H” refers to a 24-hour dial; “analogue” means the time is displayed with hands, according to Patek Philippe’s glossary.

How to read a separate 24-hour hand
When it indicates AM or PM
Read the main hour and minute hands in the usual way, then use the 24-hour indication to determine whether the associated time falls on the A-side or P-side of the day. Do not treat that hand as a second local-time hour hand unless the watch’s instructions say it is configured for dual time. Grand Seiko describes an AM/PM function, and Casio’s model-specific manual identifies A-side and P-side indications for its 24-hour hand.
When it shows a second time zone
Read the 24-hour hand against its corresponding scale to get the hour in the other time zone. The minute reading and how to interpret it depend on the watch’s design and setup; consult its instructions rather than assuming every extra hand works identically. Grand Seiko describes a dual-time configuration that can show the time in a different place.

When it is a GMT reference hand
On a GMT-style watch, ordinary hour, minute, and seconds hands can show local time while an arrow-tipped hand makes one rotation in 24 hours to show reference time. Read that extra hand against the matching 24-hour scale. If the watch uses a rotating bezel, set its reference marker as the model’s instructions specify before reading the hand. The FORMEX GMT explanation likewise describes reading the hand against a corresponding dial or bezel scale.

Quick checks if the reading seems wrong
- The hour seems half a day off: Check whether you are reading an AM/PM or second-time-zone hand as though it were the main hour hand—or vice versa.
- The hand does not line up with expected numerals: Verify which scale belongs to that hand. A second scale or subdial may have a different function.
- You are reading a bezel: Check whether it must be rotated or aligned to a reference position for the intended reading.
- The watch has several hands or modes: Use the exact model’s manual; a hand’s function can change with the watch’s configuration or operating mode.
