Read the numeral in the hour window as the current hour, then read the minutes from the watch’s minute hand or minute window. The hour display stays in place during the hour and advances at the transition. To set the watch, follow the instructions for its exact model: crown positions and permitted setting direction vary by movement.
How to read a jumping-hour watch
- Find the hour window and read the numeral centered in it. That is the current hour.
- Read the minutes separately. On a watch with a minute hand, use the hand and minute track. If the watch has a separate minute window, read that numeral instead.
- Identify what each window displays before reading the dial. For example, Bremont’s 38 mm Terra Nova Jumping Hour Steel, Bracelet has an hour window at 12, a minute window at 6, and a central running-seconds display, according to Bremont’s product page.
When the hour changes from 7 to 8 as the minute indication completes its cycle, the display reads 8:00. The numeral can look digital, but a mechanical movement drives it. Hodinkee’s Jump Hour explainer describes the hour displayed through an aperture rather than by a conventional hour hand.

What makes the hour jump?
Unlike a conventional hour hand that moves continuously, a jumping-hour display holds the hour numeral in place and advances it in a discrete step. Many watches use a numbered disc beneath the dial, though designs and movement architectures differ. The minute indication continues to move while the hour remains still.

The Christopher Ward C9 manual describes one way to produce the jump: a cam on the minute wheel loads a lever and spring as it turns. Once per hour, the spring advances a 12-tooth star wheel and the hour disc by 30 degrees. The manual says this arrangement spreads the mechanism’s power use across the hour. This explains that movement, not every jumping-hour calibre. See the C9 Jumping Hour manual.

Bremont’s Terra Nova example
Bremont says its BC634AH system gradually stores energy during the hour and releases it at the transition to turn the disc rapidly. In its July 2, 2026 article about the Terra Nova Jumping Hour 1776, Bremont says that edition’s jump takes less than one tenth of a second. That timing is a manufacturer claim about that specific edition, not a general specification for jumping-hour watches. Bremont explains the model in The Mechanics of Time: Inside the Bremont Terra Nova Jumping Hour 1776.
How to set one safely
There is no setting sequence that applies to every jumping-hour watch. Crown positions and any limits on setting direction depend on the model and movement, so use the maker’s manual for the exact reference rather than assuming instructions transfer between watches.

- 【Vintage-Inspired Jumping Hour Mechanism】 A classic jump hour watch with vintage character, powered by the Seagull ST1721 mechanical movement. Unlike traditional hands, this watches displays the hour in a window, jumping precisely at each hour change. Important – Time Setting: Always advance the minute hand clockwise only. Do not turn the minute hand counterclockwise, as this may damage the movement.
- 【Classic 39mm Size for Daily Wear】 39mm case, 20mm genuine leather strap. Total watch length is 260mm, fitting wrists from 160mm to 200mm comfortably. Real wrist test (180mm): The buckle sits at the middle hole, with 3 spare holes on each side – easy to adjust for a looser or tighter fit.
- 【Jumping Hour Characteristic (Normal Behavior)】 Due to the gear function of the Seagull movement, the hour may sometimes jump at 57 minutes instead of exactly 60 minutes. This is normal and does not affect accuracy or functionality.
- 【Premium Materials – Sapphire Crystal & 316L Steel】 Scratch-resistant AR-coated sapphire crystal, 316L stainless steel case, and screw-down crown. Built for daily wear with 50M water resistance (rain, sweat, splashes – not for swimming).
- 【Great Gift for Watch Enthusiasts】 Available in multiple colors. Comes in an box – perfect for birthdays, anniversaries, Father's Day, or as a unique gift for a watch lover.
- Find the manual for your watch’s exact reference. If you cannot find it, ask the manufacturer or a qualified watchmaker before experimenting.
- Follow the manual’s stated crown position, turning direction, and setting procedure. Do not infer a procedure from another jumping-hour watch.
- If the crown meets unusual resistance, stop rather than forcing it.
A Chaumet manual search result gives one model-specific instruction: pull the crown to position 2 and turn clockwise. Because the manual PDF redirected when opened, that excerpt is not a general instruction for Chaumet watches or jumping-hour watches as a category. See the Chaumet manual.

- Display arrangement: Check whether minutes appear on a hand and track or in a separate window, and distinguish both from any seconds display.
- Legibility: Look at numeral size and contrast, the clarity of the minute indication, and whether the display is easy to read at a glance.
- Setting instructions: Check the model’s manual for crown positions and any stated direction limits.
- Wear and use: Verify dimensions, water resistance, power reserve, and service support against the exact reference.
- Movement details: See whether the maker explains the jump mechanism and transition behavior; do not assume one brand’s description applies to another calibre.
As one specific example, Bremont lists its Terra Nova Jumping Hour Steel, Bracelet as having a BC634AH movement, a 38 mm case, 56-hour power reserve, and 30 m water resistance. Those are Bremont’s specifications for that reference, not standard characteristics of jumping-hour watches. Bremont’s July 2, 2026 article separately describes the Terra Nova Jumping Hour 1776 as a 40.5 mm limited edition of 250 pieces, also with a 56-hour reserve. Check the manufacturer for current availability and the specifications of the reference you are considering.
