How to Read and Set a World-Time Watch When Traveling

A practical guide to reading a world-time watch, selecting a destination zone, checking daylight-saving time, and verifying the result before travel.

To read a world-time watch, first identify which indication shows the selected destination’s time: it may be a second set of hands, a digital display, or a city or offset marker. To set it for travel, select the destination city or supported UTC offset using the controls specified in your exact watch manual, then check its daylight-saving setting and confirm the displayed time and date.

There is no universal crown position or button sequence. City names on a dial usually represent time zones, not every locality’s current rules, so a correct city selection may still need a seasonal adjustment.

How to read the time on a world-time watch

Start by distinguishing the watch’s home-time indication from its world-time indication. Depending on the design, the selected zone may be shown by extra analog hands, a digital readout, a city ring, or a marker. Do not assume that the main hands have changed when you select a destination.

Look for a city name, city code, or UTC offset associated with the second zone. A city label is a representative zone; it does not guarantee that the watch’s displayed time matches every nearby destination, especially where daylight-saving rules differ.

Example: CASIO Module 5765

On CASIO Module 5765, the second hand points to the selected World Time City, while the world-time hour and minute hands show that zone’s current time. CASIO’s Operation Guide for Module No. 5765 describes those hands as indicating “the current time in the selected time zone.” That instruction applies to this module; another watch may use a different display.

How to set a world-time watch for a trip

  1. Identify the exact watch or movement. Check the case back and the documentation for its model or module number. Find that exact manufacturer manual before operating the crown or buttons.
  2. Find the world-time indication. Establish which hands, screen, city ring, or marker shows the second zone and how the watch distinguishes it from home time.
  3. Select the destination zone. Use the manual’s world-time or zone-selection mode. Choose the destination city if the watch offers it; otherwise choose the corresponding supported UTC offset. A manufacturer’s city table may be representative rather than exhaustive.
  4. Check daylight-saving time. Follow the model’s instructions for automatic, standard-time, or daylight-time settings. If DST is manual, select the applicable setting and update it when the destination’s seasonal rule changes.
  5. Verify the result and exit setting mode. Compare the displayed destination time and date with a reliable current reference for that destination. Pay particular attention to locations with fractional-hour offsets or different DST rules. Exit the setting mode as the manual directs.

These are decision steps, not a shared button recipe. For example, Module 5765 changes the selected city with its crown and offers AT (AUTO), STD, and DST summer-time choices. Citizen U822 uses right-side buttons to select and confirm a region and its DST or standard-time choice; it can also transpose the two displayed regional times. Follow the manual for your specific model rather than transferring either sequence to another watch.

How daylight saving and UTC affect the setting

UTC is the reference used to express the difference between a time zone and Coordinated Universal Time. A watch may identify a zone by its UTC offset, a representative city, or both, but the offset alone does not establish whether a destination is currently observing daylight time.

Models handle seasonal changes differently. CASIO Module 5765 provides AT (AUTO), STD, and DST choices; its instructions also note that a manually specified zone without a city name may require an explicit STD or DST selection. Seiko’s 8B63 table says to add one hour for DST. Citizen’s F158 documentation states that DST information is not included in satellite signals, so users must adjust it manually before and after the DST period.

Synchronization is not a substitute for checking the setting: a radio- or satellite-synchronized watch may not have current DST rules for every location. Confirm whether your model supports automatic seasonal adjustment for the selected zone, and verify the destination’s current local time before relying on it.

What differs between world-time watches

Manufacturer instructions show why the model number matters. These examples illustrate different approaches; they are not a controlled comparison of accuracy or ease of use.

Model and source How time or zones are displayed Zone selection and coverage DST behavior
CASIO Module 5765, official guide Second hand indicates the selected city; world-time hour and minute hands show its time. Crown selects the city; the cited instructions do not give a zone-count figure. AT (AUTO), STD, and DST options; a manually specified zone without a city name may require an explicit STD or DST choice.
Citizen U822, official instructions Can display two regions simultaneously and transpose the displayed times. Right-side buttons select and confirm a region; the cited instructions do not state a zone-count figure. Provides a DST or standard-time choice for the selected region.
Seiko 8B63, official table A seconds-hand position indicates a selected time-zone entry. Table links city labels to UTC differences; it is marked “As of August 2020.” Its table instructs users to add one hour for DST.
Citizen F158, official support page World time is organized around UTC-offset zones. Supports 38 UTC-offset zones, according to Citizen Watch Global; the support page does not state a publication year. DST information is not contained in satellite signals; the user must adjust it manually.

The Seiko table’s August 2020 date matters: treat it as the model’s published reference table, not as a current universal time-zone database. Likewise, Citizen’s 38-zone figure describes the F158, not all world-time watches.

Before relying on the reading at your destination

  • Confirm the selected city or UTC offset matches the destination’s current zone.
  • Check whether the destination is observing daylight time and whether your model adjusts for it automatically or requires a manual setting.
  • Compare the watch’s displayed time and date with a reliable, current reference for the destination, particularly for fractional-hour offsets.
  • If your watch cannot select the destination or handle its seasonal rule, use another time source or a watch with a second-time-zone function that supports your travel needs.
