On Seiko V174 and V175 solar chronographs, the 24-hour hand shows whether the main time is AM or PM; it is separate from the stopwatch hands. That setup is not universal across Seiko watches, so check the caliber number on your caseback and follow the manual for that movement before setting any subdial.
How to identify the 24-hour hand
Seiko’s V175 manual lists three distinct functions: a stopwatch 1/5-second hand, a stopwatch minute hand, and a separate 24-hour hand. The V174 also has a stopwatch and a 24-hour hand, and adds an alarm function. On these V174/V175 models, the 24-hour hand can be used to tell whether the main hands indicate morning or evening. The date changes at midnight, so the 24-hour hand helps you set the intended half of the day.

Do not identify a hand’s function by the dial layout alone. Seiko’s 8B63 manual, for example, describes an independently operated 24-hour subdial that does not change when the main watch’s time zone is changed and has its own setting procedure. The movement caliber—not the presence of a small 24-hour display—determines how it works.
Find the caliber number on the caseback. Seiko says the caseback identifies the caliber and performance of the watch, and that the caliber number identifies the watch type. Match that number to the corresponding Seiko instruction manual before using model-specific steps.

How to set the time on a Seiko V174 or V175
The following procedure is for the solar V174/V175 instructions, not every Seiko chronograph. If your crown is screw-lock type, unlock it before operating it.
- Check that the watch is running. In Seiko’s manual for the solar V172/V174/V175/V176 calibers, the seconds hand should move at one-second intervals. If it moves at two-second intervals or has stopped, charge the watch by exposing the dial to light, as the manual directs.
- Stop the seconds hand. Wait until it reaches 12 o’clock, then pull the crown to the second click. The seconds hand stops.
- Establish AM or PM. Advance the hands until the date changes to the next date; Seiko says this establishes the AM period. Continue advancing the hands to the correct time, checking the V174/V175 24-hour hand to confirm whether the time is AM or PM.
- Set the minute hand accurately. Seiko recommends moving the minute hand 4–5 minutes ahead, then turning it back to the correct time.
- Restart the watch. Push the crown back to its normal position in time with a time signal. If the crown is screw-lock type, lock it after setting.
Seiko cautions against correcting the date between 9 p.m. and 1 a.m., because doing so may interfere with correct engagement of the date-driving wheel. Follow the instructions for your exact caliber if the date needs correction.

Keep time setting separate from stopwatch adjustment
On the V175, the crown’s second click is also used for setting the stopwatch hands to their preliminary position and for system reset. These are separate operations from setting the time. The 24-hour hand is not a stopwatch counter; do not start a stopwatch reset or hand-adjustment procedure just to set the main time. The normal crown position is used for stopwatch operation.
