Timex recommends having a retailer or jeweler replace a watch battery. If you choose to do it yourself, first identify your exact watch and battery code, then follow its manual for the caseback and any reset procedure. Opening the watch exposes the gasket—the seal that helps keep water out—and closing the case does not prove the watch remains water-resistant. If you need confidence around water, use a qualified repairer and ask whether the seal will be inspected and the watch pressure-tested.
Decide whether DIY is appropriate
Timex’s battery guidance says it strongly recommends having a retailer or jeweler replace the battery; its watch-battery article also recommends professional replacement. That is the safer choice if the watch is regularly exposed to water, if you cannot identify its caseback procedure, or if you are unsure how to handle the seal.

Identify the exact battery and caseback first
Do not buy a battery based only on the Timex name or the fact that the watch is analog. Check the model or style marking on the watch and look up its model-specific instructions before opening it. Timex’s manuals listing includes different battery codes for particular model families: SR626SW appears for selected two-hand and three-hand quartz analog groups, while CR2016 appears for selected date and day/date analog groups. These examples do not establish the battery for an unspecified watch.

Timex describes three caseback designs: snap-on, screwed-on, and coin-slot hatch. Each has a different opening method, so use the instructions for your exact model rather than forcing a generic tool or technique. If the caseback type or procedure is unclear, stop and take the watch to a repairer.

If you proceed, protect the gasket
The gasket sits between the case and caseback and helps keep water out. Timex warns that moving it can jeopardize water resistance. Work carefully and keep the seal clean, correctly seated, and undamaged; avoid stretching, pinching, or dislodging it. Timex’s general DIY guidance suggests plastic tools and gloves, but those precautions do not make opening the watch risk-free.
- Prepare: Work on a clean, well-lit surface and keep the correct replacement battery and model manual at hand. Follow the manual’s caseback-opening instructions.
- Open without forcing: Use only the method specified for the watch’s snap-on, screwed-on, or coin-slot back. Stop if it resists or the tool slips.
- Check the seal: Note the gasket’s position and condition without stretching or contaminating it. If it is cracked, flattened, displaced, missing, or otherwise uncertain, do not claim the watch is water-resistant; have a repairer assess the seal.
- Replace the battery: Follow the model instructions for removing and installing the cell. Avoid touching sensitive internal components with a metal tool where a nonmetallic tool is appropriate.
- Reset only as directed: Some Timex models have an internal reset switch, but there is no single reset method established for every watch. Follow the exact manual.
- Close the case: Refit the gasket as directed and close the back using the model-specific procedure. Do not force it closed.
Reassembly does not verify water resistance
A water-resistance marking describes the model’s capability and limits; it is not evidence that a watch remains sealed after the case has been opened. Timex’s water-resistance guide distinguishes ratings such as 30m, 50m, 100m, and 200m, and says a watch marked water-resistant without a depth indication should not be submerged. Those ratings do not show that a particular battery replacement passed a seal check.

If water exposure matters, ask a qualified service provider whether the gasket was inspected and whether the watch was pressure-tested after the battery change. Until you have that assurance, do not rely on the old rating as proof of post-service sealing.
Where to get professional battery service
Timex lists battery replacement through its watch repair process. The final fee depends on evaluation, and service availability and terms can vary; check the current repair page for your location. Timex’s warranty page describes a one-year manufacturing-defect warranty for covered watches, subject to its stated scope and location terms. Battery replacement by itself does not establish warranty coverage.
