You can reset a forgotten Apple Watch passcode on the watch itself; you do not need the paired iPhone for the reset. The process erases the watch’s content and settings, and Activation Lock remains, so have the Apple Account and password used to set up the watch ready before you begin.
Reset a locked Apple Watch without its paired iPhone
- Put the Apple Watch on its charger and keep it there during the reset.
- Press and hold the side button until the power controls appear.
- Release the side button, then press and hold the Digital Crown until the erase or reset screen appears.
- Tap Reset, then tap Reset again to confirm.
- Wait for the erase to finish. Set up the watch again and restore from a backup if prompted.
The screen labels may vary slightly by watchOS version. Follow the reset wording shown on your watch. Apple’s instructions are in If you’ve forgotten your Apple Watch passcode.
What the reset does
This is an erase, not a way to reveal or bypass the forgotten passcode while keeping the watch’s content and settings. Apple’s documented process is to reset the watch, set it up again, and restore from a backup if one is available. Do not assume a backup exists or that all data can be recovered.
Activation Lock remains after the reset
Resetting directly on the watch does not remove Activation Lock. When you set it up again, you may need the Apple Account and password used to set up the watch. If the watch is linked to someone else’s account, ask that owner to remove it; the reset does not bypass their ownership protection. See Apple’s guidance on pairing an Apple Watch.

If the paired iPhone is available
If you can use the paired iPhone, unpairing the watch through the Apple Watch app is a different route: Apple says this removes Activation Lock. This is useful when you are transferring the watch or want to pair it again without the old Activation Lock remaining.
For a cellular watch, keep the plan if you will pair the same watch and iPhone again; remove it if transferring the watch or cancelling service. Removing the plan from the watch may not cancel the carrier subscription, so contact your carrier when cancellation is needed. Follow Apple’s unpair and erase instructions.

Can I reset my Apple Watch without my iPhone?
Yes. Keep the watch on its charger, open the reset screen with the side button and Digital Crown, and confirm Reset twice. You will still need the associated Apple Account credentials if Activation Lock appears during setup.
Will resetting my Apple Watch remove Activation Lock?
No. A direct reset on the watch leaves Activation Lock in place. Apple says unpairing through the paired iPhone removes Activation Lock.

Will my data come back after resetting?
Apple advises setting up the watch again and restoring from a backup if prompted. Whether data can be restored depends on the backup available; recovery is not guaranteed.
What happens after 10 incorrect passcode attempts?
If Erase Data is enabled, Apple says the watch erases its data after 10 incorrect passcode attempts. Do not deliberately guess passcodes to trigger this; use the reset procedure instead.
