Set a maximum total spend before you shop, then work backward to find the highest price you can offer for the watch itself. Your ceiling should leave room for shipping, insurance, taxes or duties, transaction fees, any auction buyer’s premium, and possible servicing. Compare watches with a similar reference, era, condition, materials, and included strap or bracelet; a low asking price alone is not evidence of a good buy.
Start with a specific watch, not a price tier
Choose a model or a narrow comparison set before deciding what it should cost. Write down the brand, reference if known, approximate era, movement type, size, and acceptable condition. A price is meaningful only against sufficiently similar watches: differences in originality, condition, materials, and whether a bracelet or strap is included can change the comparison.

Use several close examples to establish a range rather than anchoring on one listing. The Watch Pages recommends comparing like with like before setting a budget: its guide to buying a vintage watch online also highlights the importance of considering shipping, insurance, and destination.

Calculate your all-in ceiling before making an offer
Decide the most you are willing and able to spend in total. Then subtract costs beyond the watch’s price to find your maximum offer or auction bid. Do not drop a service or fee reserve just to make an attractive listing fit.

- Set your total limit. Choose the maximum amount you can spend on the purchase and the costs you expect to incur.
- List transaction costs. Include insured shipping, applicable taxes or duties, platform or payment fees, and any auction buyer’s premium. These depend on the seller, destination, payment method, and sale terms.
- Reserve for condition uncertainty. If recent service is not credibly documented, leave room for a possible repair or service. Ask a qualified watchmaker for an estimate tied to that specific watch and movement; there is no universal service-cost figure established here.
- Subtract costs from the ceiling. The remainder is your maximum price for the watch. For auctions, calculate from the house’s current sale terms rather than treating the hammer price as the final amount.
- Pass if the total does not fit. If the likely total exceeds your ceiling, do not make the watch fit by quietly removing a cost allowance.
Assess the costs and risks that change a listing’s value
Condition and originality
Ask what is original, what has been replaced or refinished, and whether components appear to match. Damage, alterations, mismatched parts, or deferred work can make a cheap listing poor value. Request clear photographs and specific answers rather than relying on a broad description such as “good condition.”
Service history
Authenticity and mechanical condition are separate questions. Ask when the watch was serviced, who did the work, what was included, and whether an invoice or warranty is available. If the seller cannot provide credible records, treat service as an uncertain future cost and seek a watchmaker’s movement-specific estimate before setting your final offer.

Shipping, insurance, and destination charges
Check the shipping method, whether the parcel is insured for its full value, and who is responsible if it is lost or damaged. Add applicable destination taxes or duties and any currency-conversion or payment charges that apply to your transaction. Shipping costs vary with method, insurance, and destination, so use the actual listing or seller’s quote rather than a generic allowance.

Before paying, establish what authentication or condition checks were performed, whether a warranty applies, how returns work, and who pays insured return shipping. As one platform-specific example, Chrono24 says purchases from professional dealers using Buyer Protection have escrow and a 14-day right of withdrawal, while its page distinguishes private-seller transactions that do not carry that same return right. The page also states an escrow fee of 2.5% of the total price including shipping. These are Chrono24’s stated terms, not a general rule for online watch sales; check the terms applicable to your country and the specific transaction. Chrono24’s official page says: “Pay securely via the Chrono24 Escrow Service, benefit from a 14-day statutory right of withdrawal, and rely on our Commitment to Authenticity.” See Chrono24’s Buyer Protection terms for the platform’s details.

| Buying route | Questions to resolve |
|---|---|
| Specialist dealer or certified pre-owned retailer | What authentication and condition checks were performed? Is service documented? What warranty, return window, and shipping cost apply? |
| Marketplace professional dealer | Is escrow available? Which authenticity and return commitments apply to this dealer, country, and listing? Who pays insured return shipping? |
| Private seller | What evidence supports authenticity and service claims? Is there a written return agreement? Is payment protected and insured shipping arranged? Do not assume dealer protections apply. |
| Auction | What buyer’s premium and other charges apply? Can you inspect the watch or obtain a condition report? Is the sale final, or are remedies limited? |
For an auction, read the house’s own current terms and inspect the watch or condition report before bidding. Phillips’ prospective-buyer material advises having watches checked by a competent watchmaker and notes that buyer’s premiums apply; the sale’s specific terms determine the charges. Its Hong Kong prospective-buyer guide for watches is one example, not a substitute for the terms of another sale.

DialHunter’s guide, updated in May 2026, describes vintage watches ranging from £80 on eBay to £80,000 at auction and calls £200–£2,000 a realistic range for a first-time buyer, with examples under £300 and at £300–£600. Those are the guide publisher’s observations and recommendations, not a representative market dataset, an appraisal, or a guarantee of what a particular watch costs today. Use them only as broad context; model-specific comparisons and your all-in ceiling are more useful for deciding what to offer. See DialHunter’s beginner guide to buying a vintage watch.
Run a final listing check before committing
- Does the watch match the reference, era, movement, size, and condition you budgeted for?
- Are originality, replaced or refinished parts, and condition explained clearly enough to assess?
- Is service history supported by details or records, and have you allowed for uncertainty where it is not?
- Have you confirmed the seller’s authentication claims, warranty, return terms, and payment protections in writing?
- Have you included insured shipping, taxes or duties, fees, and any auction premium in the total?
- Does your maximum still fit after every cost and reserve is included?
If important questions remain unanswered, pause and request the information, an inspection, or an estimate. If the seller will not provide enough detail to assess the watch and transaction, do not treat a low price as a reason to skip diligence.
