Check the watch’s labels and model or module number, then use its matching manual before following a button sequence. Most setting procedures involve selecting timekeeping, entering adjustment, moving through fields, changing values, and saving or exiting—but the exact controls differ.
What the four buttons do
Do not assume that a button has a particular job because of its position on the case. Read any printed labels, then identify the watch’s make and model or module number. A control may change modes, advance a setting field, alter a displayed value, operate the light, or control a stopwatch, timer, or alarm; its function depends on the model and sometimes the screen currently displayed.

How to set the time and date
Use this as a general description of the process, not a universal button sequence. Find the exact manual first; it will identify which button enters adjustment, moves among fields, changes values, and saves or exits.
- Identify the watch. Note the make and model or module number. Casio’s watch-manual lookup searches by module number; Timex also directs owners to model-specific instructions for date setting.
- Select timekeeping. Use the manual to reach the ordinary time-and-date display before changing the current time or date.
- Enter the documented setting procedure. Follow the manual’s specified button and hold or press instructions. Do not substitute a sequence from a different model.
- Move through the fields and adjust them. Use the manual’s instructions for selecting and changing seconds, time, date, or other displayed fields; their order varies by model.
- Save or exit as directed. Confirm the display has returned to timekeeping and the values are correct.
Examples from specific watch manuals
These examples show why a four-button layout is not enough to identify a setting sequence. They apply only to the named manuals and models.

Casio describes the 5479 Timekeeping Mode as the mode used “to set and view a digital display of the current time and date.” Its guide also gives a separate procedure for adjusting the analog hands. Consult the Casio Operation Guide 5479 for that watch’s complete instructions.
Mode, alarms, stopwatches, and timers
A mode button may move between functions, but the available modes and sequence depend on the model. For example, the Timex W-307 manual lists Chrono, Timer, Hydration, and three alarm modes. That list is specific to the W-307, not a standard menu for all digital watches. See the Timex W-307 User Manual for its modes and controls. The Timex W-298 User Manual is another example of a four-button digital watch with multiple operating modes.

Setting an alarm
Set an alarm from the alarm screen, not the timekeeping screen. The Casio module 3542 instructions, for example, have the user select the alarm screen to change and enter its setting procedure there. Follow the matching manual; an alarm-setting sequence is not the procedure for changing the current time. See Casio’s alarm instructions for module 3542.
Stopwatch and countdown timer
Stopwatch and timer controls are mode-specific. A button used to change a setting value may have a different function on a stopwatch or timer screen. Use the watch’s manual to identify the correct controls and procedure for the displayed mode.

Finding the exact instructions
- Look for the make and model or module number on the case back, dial, packaging, warranty card, or original paperwork.
- Search the manufacturer’s official manual library using the number exactly as printed.
- Check that the manual matches the watch, including its model or module number, before following any steps.
- If you cannot find the manual, contact the manufacturer’s support service rather than guessing at a sequence.
For Casio, use the official watch manual lookup. Timex’s day and date guidance also points readers toward model-specific instructions.

Do the four buttons on every digital watch do the same thing?
No. Button labels, jobs, and setting sequences vary by make and model. Use the exact manual rather than assuming a button’s function from its position or from another watch.

How do I find out how to change the time and date?
Identify the watch’s make and model or module number, then find the matching manufacturer’s manual. Return to timekeeping and follow that manual’s instructions for entering adjustment, moving between fields, changing values, and saving or exiting.
Can I use the digital time-setting steps to adjust analog hands?
Not necessarily. On combination analog-digital watches, the digital display and analog hands may have separate adjustment procedures. Check the manual for instructions for both.
Why do the same buttons behave differently on another screen?
Button functions can depend on the mode currently displayed. Timekeeping, alarm, stopwatch, and timer screens can have different controls, so select the relevant mode and consult its instructions.
The Bottom Line
There is no universal four-button map or setting sequence. Identify the exact watch, select the appropriate mode, and follow its manual for changing the time, date, alarm, or other function; combination analog-digital models may require separate procedures for the hands and digital display.
