On an office or caller GMT, you adjust the 24-hour GMT hand independently; on a traveler or true GMT, you adjust the local hour hand independently. That distinction tells you which time can be changed without moving the other display. Crown positions and date-setting steps vary by movement, so use the manual for your exact watch before turning the crown.

What the GMT hand shows

A GMT hand makes one rotation in 24 hours and is read against a 24-hour scale on the dial or a compatible bezel. It can track a reference time zone while the regular hour and minute hands show local time. TUDOR’s GMT tutorial describes this reference-time and local-time arrangement.

Office GMT and caller GMT mean the same style

“Office” and “caller” are alternate labels for a GMT arrangement in which the GMT hand can be adjusted independently of the regular local-time hands. To track another zone, set the regular hands to local time, then set the 24-hour hand to the reference time you want to follow. Check the scale carefully so the GMT hand indicates the intended AM or PM half of the day. Timex explains the distinction and notes that the exact setting method varies by watch: What is a GMT watch?

  1. Follow your watch manual to set the regular hour and minute hands to local time.
  2. Use the separately adjustable GMT control, as described in that manual, to align the 24-hour hand with the chosen reference time zone.
  3. Verify the AM/PM reading on the 24-hour scale. If the watch has a rotating bezel, check that its index is positioned as intended.
  4. Return the crown to its normal operating position and confirm the date according to the manual.

Traveler GMT and true GMT adjust local time instead

On a traveler or true GMT, the local hour hand moves independently, commonly in one-hour increments, while the GMT hand remains on reference time. This is useful when changing local time zones because you can move the local hour display without resetting the reference display.

Procedures are specific to the movement. In its tutorial for the GMT watch it covers, TUDOR says to set reference time using the 24-hour hand and minute hand, then push in the crown and pull it out one notch to set local time with the regular hour hand in one-hour increments. The tutorial also explains how that watch’s rotating bezel can display a third zone. Those crown steps apply to the watch in that tutorial, not to every GMT watch.

Identify your watch before setting it

Look in the manual for which hand moves independently and how the crown or other controls operate. If the GMT hand moves while the local hour hand stays put, it is the office/caller style. If the local hour hand advances independently while the GMT hand stays on reference time, it is the traveler/true style. The labels do not establish a universal crown click, turning direction, or date behavior.

Check date instructions for the exact movement

Do not assume that a date-setting instruction for one GMT watch applies to another. Citizen’s 9054 manual specifically warns against turning the crown backwards while switching the date display, because that model may then show the wrong date. Follow your own watch’s manual for date adjustment.

Which GMT style suits the way you use it?

The practical choice depends on which time you expect to change most often. An office/caller mechanism gives you an independently adjustable GMT hand for tracking another zone while local time remains on the regular hands. A traveler/true mechanism lets you shift local hour time while preserving the GMT reference display. Neither arrangement is universally better; check how the specific watch handles local-time changes, the date, and its 24-hour scale or bezel.
