How to Set and Use a Seiko Chronograph Watch: Why the Caliber Decides the Steps

Setting a Seiko chronograph depends on which movement is inside it. The crown pulls, button functions, stopwatch capacity and date-change cautions differ between calibers, so a set of steps that works on one Seiko can misset another. Before touching the crown, find the caliber or reference number, then follow the official Seiko manual that matches it.

Find your caliber before you follow any steps

The caliber number identifies the movement, and the movement determines the controls. You can usually find it in one of two places: engraved or printed on the caseback, or on the warranty card and paperwork that came with the watch. Once you have it, search Seiko’s official instruction manuals for that exact caliber and use only that manual.

The table below shows how the chronograph calibers covered by Seiko’s official instructions differ. Where a cell reads “not stated,” the manual for that caliber did not provide the value in the material reviewed, so check your own manual rather than assuming a common Seiko behavior.

Caliber Power type Crown, first click / second click Stopwatch controls Stopwatch capacity Date-change caution window
8R46 Mechanical First click: date. Second click: time. Button A starts and stops; Button B resets. Up to 30 minutes 8 PM to 2 AM
8R48 Mechanical First click: date. Second click: time. Button A starts and stops; Button B resets. Up to 12 hours 8 PM to 2 AM
V172 Solar First click: date and alarm setting. Second click: time, preliminary stopwatch-hand positioning and system reset. Not stated in the material reviewed; check the V172 manual. Not stated Not stated
V192 Solar First click: date. Second click: time. Screw-down crown must be relocked after operation where applicable. Not stated in the material reviewed; check the V192 manual. Not stated 9 PM to 1 AM
5X83 (GPS solar) Solar with GPS Not stated Stopwatch mode is entered using the model’s own controls, which differ from the mechanical family. Not stated Not stated

The mechanical 8R46 and 8R48 are the only calibers below for which the detailed steps here apply. Treat them as a worked example for that family, not as universal Seiko instructions.

Setting the date and time on the 8R46 and 8R48

The steps below apply only to the 8R46 and 8R48 mechanical chronographs, as described in Seiko’s official 8R46/8R48 instructions. If your watch uses a different caliber, use its own manual.

  1. If the crown is screw-down, unscrew it fully to unlock it before you pull it out.
  2. Pull the crown to the first click. This sets the date.
  3. Set the date to the day before the current date, then move on to time setting.
  4. Do not change the date while the watch displays between 8 PM and 2 AM. Seiko warns this window can cause date-change problems.
  5. Pull the crown out to the second click. The small seconds hand stops. Wait until the small seconds hand reaches 12, then set the time.
  6. Advance the hands until the date changes. This establishes the AM period. Then advance the hands to the correct time.
  7. Seiko notes that on a mechanical watch you should set the minute hand slightly behind the target time and then advance it to the exact minute. This removes backlash from the setting.
  8. Push the crown back in when the time signal reaches the exact minute.
  9. If the crown is screw-down, screw it back down to lock it.

Two checks confirm the date is right. The date changes around midnight; if the date changes around noon instead, the AM/PM setting is wrong. Also expect to correct the date after February and after 30-day months, because the date does not always roll over correctly in those months.

Using the stopwatch on the 8R46 and 8R48

Seiko defines a chronograph as a watch function that measures elapsed time while still indicating the current time. On the 8R46 and 8R48 the chronograph is run with the two pushers: Button A starts and stops the stopwatch, and Button B resets it.

Check before you start

  • Confirm the central stopwatch seconds hand reads zero.
  • Check the power reserve indicator. Seiko says the stopwatch cannot be used when the indicated reserve is below 10 hours. Wind the watch first if it is below that level.
  • Do not pull the crown out to adjust the time or date while the stopwatch is running. Seiko’s instructions state: “Please do not pull out the crown to adjust the time/date while the stopwatch is in operation.”

Timing a single event

  1. Press Button A to start the stopwatch.
  2. Press Button A again to stop it at the end of the event.
  3. Press Button B to return the stopwatch to zero.

For cumulative timing, such as adding up several laps, repeat the start and stop with Button A and press Button B only after the final stop.

Reading the elapsed time

The 8R46 measures up to 30 minutes. The 8R48 measures up to 12 hours. On the 8R48 the stopwatch minute hand makes one full turn every 30 minutes, so you must read it together with the stopwatch hour hand. Seiko’s instructions say that in the second half of each 30-minute cycle, you add 30 minutes to the minute-hand reading. Confirm the exact hour-hand position against the reading example in your manual before you record a time.

Why the chronograph will not reset to zero

If the stopwatch hands do not return to zero after you press Button B, work through these checks in order:

  • Confirm the stopwatch has been stopped. Reset is done after the final stop, not while the hands are still running.
  • Check the power reserve. Below 10 hours of indicated reserve, Seiko says the stopwatch cannot be used, so wind the watch and try again.
  • Do not pull the crown while the stopwatch runs, as the manual forbids this.
  • If the hands still do not return to zero after these steps, stop using the reset function and take the watch to an authorized service point.

Solar models: keep their instructions separate

Seiko’s solar chronographs do not use the 8R46/8R48 procedure, even when the crown pulls and button names look similar. Two points matter most.

V172

The V172 manual gives the first crown click for date and alarm setting, and the second click for time setting, preliminary stopwatch-hand positioning and system reset. Do not apply the 8R46/8R48 date-setting order to this caliber.

V192

Before adjusting the date on a V192, check that the watch is working and sufficiently charged. Avoid date adjustment between 9 PM and 1 AM. Set the date at the first crown click and the time at the second click, and relock a screw-down crown after use where the model has one.

5X83 GPS solar

The 5X83 is a GPS solar model whose stopwatch mode is entered through its own controls. Its manual, not the mechanical instructions above, is the reference for button-by-button operation.

Bracelet adjustment and service

According to Seiko’s official 8R46/8R48 instructions, bracelet adjustment is available through the retailer that sold the watch. Owners who cannot use that retailer are directed to the Seiko Customer Service Center. Other retailers may or may not perform the work, so ask before you bring the watch in.

Keep in mind that the Seiko manual is the first reference for any setting question, and service is the next step only when a function such as the stopwatch reset still fails after the checks above.
