To use a Seiko quartz chronograph, keep the crown in its normal position: press button A to start and stop timing, then press button B to reset after stopping. Button B can also control split timing on some movements. Seiko uses different quartz chronograph calibers, so check the caliber on the watch or in its manual before relying on the hand layout, timing range, or adjustment procedure.
Identify the movement before timing
“Seiko quartz chronograph” describes watches with different movements, not one universal dial or operating sequence. Find the caliber printed on the watch or listed in its manual, then follow that caliber’s instructions. Seiko’s Y187 manual, V172/V174/V175/V176 instructions, and Y182 manual are examples for those calibers; their procedures and specifications should not be assumed to apply to every Seiko chronograph.

The dial can also differ. The V172/V174/V175 instructions describe a 1/5-second hand, while V176 has separate seconds and 1/20-second hands. A tachymeter scale appears on some models, not all.

Start, stop, and reset the stopwatch
For the documented Y187 example
- Leave the crown in its normal position.
- Press button B to bring the stopwatch hands to zero before timing.
- Press button A to start.
- Press button A again to stop. To resume a stopped measurement, press A again.
- After stopping, press button B to reset the stopwatch hands to zero.
Seiko’s V172/V174/V175/V176 instructions also identify A as start/stop and B as split/reset, and specify using the stopwatch with the crown in its normal position. Check that the stopwatch hands return to zero before beginning a new measurement.

Use split timing when the movement supports it
Split timing lets you read an intermediate time while the stopwatch continues measuring. The Y187 and Y182 manuals include split measurement and split release in their button sequences. Button B’s role therefore depends on the movement and the current stopwatch state: use the split sequence in the exact caliber manual rather than treating every press of B as a reset.
Know the measuring range and precision
The timing limit and smallest displayed increment vary by caliber. These figures are specifications from the named Seiko manuals, whose publication dates are not stated in the documents.
Rank #2
| Movement or instructions | Displayed increment and hand layout | Measuring range |
|---|---|---|
| Y187 | 1/5-second increments | Up to 30 minutes, then counts from zero repeatedly up to six hours |
| Y182 | 1/5-second increments | Up to 30 minutes, then counts from zero repeatedly up to six hours |
| V172/V174/V175 | 1/5-second hand | Maximum 60 minutes |
| V176 | Separate seconds and 1/20-second hands | The cited instructions do not establish a maximum range for this summary |
Do not transfer one movement’s maximum range to another. For V176’s range and any other detail not covered above, consult the instructions for the watch’s caliber.

A hand that misses zero after reset may need its preliminary position adjusted; it does not by itself establish that the hand is broken. Seiko instructs users of the documented V-series family to adjust the stopwatch hands’ preliminary position when they do not return to zero.

For the Y187, the manual’s adjustment procedure begins by pulling the crown to its second click and using designated buttons to move the stopwatch minute and 1/5-second hands to zero. The button assignments are shown in that manual’s diagrams. After adjustment, return the crown to normal and set the main time. Follow the exact movement manual rather than combining steps from different calibers.
The Y187 manual notes that measurement can begin when A is pressed even if the hands have not finished returning after reset. For a clear reading, wait for the reset to finish and confirm the hands are at zero before starting.

Use a tachymeter only within its stated limits
On the documented Y182 example, the tachymeter scale can be used only when the measured time is less than 60 seconds. This limit applies to that manual and to models with the relevant scale; it is not a general specification for every Seiko quartz chronograph. Follow the watch’s own instructions for using its scale.
Battery and service
The Y187 manual recommends an authorized Seiko dealer for battery replacement. Confirm that a service provider is authorized before relying on that status; the manual’s recommendation does not establish that any particular retailer is authorized.
