First identify your watch’s caliber: Grand Seiko Spring Drive models do not all wind or set the time the same way. The cited 9R84/9R65/9R15 automatic calibers set the time at the crown’s second click, while the manually wound 9R31 sets it at the first. Check the caliber marking or your watch documentation, then follow the matching Grand Seiko instruction manual—do not assume one crown procedure applies to every Spring Drive.
Identify the movement before turning the crown
Look for the caliber number in the watch documentation or on the watch, then find that caliber’s Grand Seiko manual. The guidance below covers the specific calibers cited here; other Spring Drive calibers may have different procedures.

For the cited automatic calibers
The 9R84/9R65/9R15 and 9RA5/9RA2 manuals describe automatic watches that can also be wound by hand. Wind the mainspring sufficiently before setting the time, and use the power-reserve indicator where your model has one. The cited guidance does not specify one winding count that applies across these calibers.

For caliber 9R31
With the crown in its normal position, turn it slowly clockwise to wind the mainspring. It turns freely counterclockwise. Grand Seiko’s 9R31 manual says seven full crown rotations provide approximately ten hours of operation; that figure applies to the 9R31, not to Spring Drive watches generally.
Set the time using your caliber’s crown position
9R84/9R65/9R15
- Pull the crown out to the second click to set the hands.
- Push the crown back in in accordance with a time signal.
Grand Seiko’s manual cautions: “Do not stop the movement of the seconds hand (or the small seconds hand) for longer than 30 minutes.”
9R31
- Pull the crown out to the first click to set the time.
- Push the crown back in in accordance with a time signal.
The first-click instruction is specific to the 9R31; do not use it as a general rule for Spring Drive.

Adjust the date only according to the manual
For the cited 9R84/9R65/9R15 models, the first crown click adjusts the date and the second sets the time. Before adjusting the date, move the hour hand outside the interval from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m.; the manual warns against date adjustment while the indicated time is within that period. Date correction may also be needed after February and months with 30 days. Verify the instructions for your exact caliber before making a date adjustment.
Secure the crown and observe caliber-specific limits
Screw-down crown
If your model has a screw-down crown, screw it back in after setting or winding, following the watch’s manual.
Cold-weather power reserve
Grand Seiko’s manuals give different recommendations by caliber: retain at least one-sixth of the indicated power for the 9R31 below 0°C, and at least one-fifth for the 9RA5/9RA2. These are caliber-specific recommendations, not a single rule for all Spring Drive watches.
What the published 9R31 figures mean
Grand Seiko lists approximately 72 hours of power reserve and accuracy of ±15 seconds per month (±1 second per day) for caliber 9R31. These are specifications for that caliber; they should not be generalized to other Spring Drive models. The 9R31 manual’s seven-rotation winding guidance is likewise specific to that movement.
