There is no universal setting sequence for a big-date watch. Check the exact reference and movement calibre, then follow that watch’s official manual before operating its calendar controls. The wrong setting method—or correcting the date during a restricted period—can damage the mechanism.
Before you touch the date controls
- Identify the watch. Find its brand, model or reference number, and movement calibre. Use those details to locate the matching official manual; procedures can differ even between watches from the same brand. Rolex notes that functions vary by model and directs owners to the relevant guide, while Longines says the restricted correction interval may vary by calibre. - Read the calendar warning first. Look for restricted hours, the correct crown position or pusher, the turning direction, and any required tool. Do not assume another watch’s instructions apply.
- Do not force a control. If the crown or a corrector resists, stop. If you cannot confirm the correct procedure, ask an authorized or qualified watchmaker rather than experimenting.
Why big-date watches need model-specific instructions
“Big date” describes a prominent date display, not one standardized adjustment system. Some watches use a crown quickset; others have separate recessed correctors for calendar functions. The Longines examples below show these different arrangements, but they are not instructions for every big-date watch.

Example: Longines crown quickset
In Longines’ general date-watch instructions, position 2 is for quick date correction and position 3 is for setting the time. These positions are specific to the watches covered by that guide; check your own manual before using them.

- If your model has a screw-in crown, unscrew it as instructed.
- Pull the crown to position 2 and turn it forward to correct the date.
- Return the crown to position 1. If it screws down, secure it as the manual directs.
Longines’ general instructions say to avoid quick date correction between 20:00 and 03:00. If you cannot tell whether the watch is within that interval, the guide suggests moving the hands past 04:00 before correcting the date. Use this only where the instructions for your model support it; your watch’s own manual takes precedence. Longines: User manuals.

Example: Longines L707 calendar correctors
The L707 manual describes a different arrangement: separate recessed correctors for the day and date, operated with a corrector tool. It warns: “Avoid any date correction, or use of the correctors 2 and 3, between 20:00 and 03:00; this could damage the mechanism.” That warning applies to the L707 instructions, not automatically to other movements. Use a tool only if your own manual specifies one, and follow its directions for the designated corrector. Longines: User manuals.
After setting a watch with a screw-down crown
Secure the crown exactly as the manual instructs. Rolex emphasizes screwing the crown down after setting the date or time, or winding, to preserve waterproofness. The crown design and securing procedure vary by watch, so do not assume every crown screws down. Rolex: Watch care and service FAQ.
