Set the NH34A’s GMT hand with the crown in its first-click position: turn the crown clockwise, viewed from the crown side, until the hand points to the desired time on the 24-hour scale. Push the crown back in when finished. The second click sets the regular hour and minute hands, not the GMT hand.

If your watch has a screw-down crown, unscrew it carefully until it releases. Not every NH34 watch has a screw-down crown.

Use the dial’s 24-hour scale to set the hand to the intended second time zone. The GMT hand completes one revolution in 24 hours, so a reading of 16 indicates 4 p.m. in that zone.

Push the crown fully back to its normal position. If it is a screw-down crown, secure it according to the instructions for your watch model.

Know what each crown position controls
On the NH34A, the first click adjusts the date and GMT hand. The second click sets the regular hour and minute hands; the seconds hand stops in that position. This is not the independent local-hour adjustment found on some other GMT watches.

The NH34A movement instruction sheet warns not to set the date between 9 p.m. and 4 a.m., because it may cause a malfunction. A separate NH34 guide gives a 9 p.m.–3 a.m. window and also cautions against quick-setting the GMT during that period. Because the stated end times differ, use the more cautious 9 p.m.–4 a.m. window when quick-setting the date or GMT. If you are unsure what time the watch is displaying, consult the watch’s own instructions or move the hands safely outside that window before changing the date.

NH34 watches can have different case and crown designs. Check the case back for the caliber code, then look up the matching instructions for your exact watch. Seiko’s instruction lookup explains how to identify the caliber and notes that paper manuals began to be phased out gradually in February 2024. The reviewed page lists 4R34 and NH35 manuals but did not show an NH34-specific entry, so use the watch maker’s instructions where available.
If the GMT hand does not move
Confirm that the crown is at the first click and that you are turning it clockwise. If the crown will not engage or the hand still does not move, stop rather than forcing the crown; that points to a mechanical or model-specific issue rather than routine setting. Consult the watch’s instructions or a qualified watchmaker.
