Set up the exact race activity on your Garmin before race day, then balance GPS detail, navigation, and battery life against your expected finish time. UltraTrac can extend battery life by recording GPS points and sensor data less frequently, but it reduces activity quality. Multi-system GPS may improve positioning in challenging conditions, but uses battery faster than GPS-only. The right setup depends on your watch model, course, and how long you expect to be out.
Start with your watch model and race activity
Garmin menus and GPS options vary by model, and some satellite settings are activity-specific. Use the profile you plan to race with—not a different running profile—and consult that watch’s manual for exact button presses and available options. Garmin’s general UltraTrac instructions apply to most watches but direct users to their model’s manual for specific steps: Garmin’s UltraTrac instructions.

Choose a GPS mode that fits the race
| Option | Battery effect in Garmin’s guidance | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| GPS only | Uses less battery than GPS combined with another satellite system, according to the Enduro manual. | A reasonable option when battery life matters and GPS-only positioning suits the course. |
| GPS plus another satellite system | Can drain the battery faster than GPS only. | Garmin says it may improve positioning where sky visibility is poor. Exact choices vary by watch. |
| UltraTrac | Increases battery life. | Records GPS points and sensor data less frequently, reducing recorded activity quality. |
Garmin’s Enduro manual lists GPS Only, GPS + GLONASS, GPS + GALILEO, and UltraTrac. Other models may use different labels; for example, a Forerunner 955 manual uses “All Systems” and “All + Multi-Band.” Check the manual for your specific watch rather than assuming these options appear on yours. Garmin describes the trade-off plainly: “Enabling the UltraTrac feature increases battery life but decreases the quality of recorded activities.” Garmin Enduro Owners Manual, “Changing the GPS Setting”.
#1 Best Overall
- Sends accurate real-time heart rate and HRV data to compatible Garmin smartwatches and cycling computers, fitness equipment, and apps
- Comfortable machine-washable strap is available in two sizes (XS–S and M–XL) for the most ideal fit for your body type
- Understand how much you slow down when your foot hits the ground with step speed loss, and improve your running form with additional running dynamics, including stride length, vertical oscillation and ground contact time balance (requires compatible smartwatch)
- During activities where you can’t wear a watch, such as team sports, HRM 600 will record the workout and sync data, including heart rate, calories, speed, distance and more, directly to the Garmin Connect smartphone app
- Tracks daily metrics, including estimated steps, heart rate, calories burned and more, and syncs that data directly to the Garmin Connect smartphone app
Use UltraTrac only if its longer battery life is worth less frequent track and sensor updates for your race. If precise, frequent track detail is important, choose a standard GPS mode your watch supports and check its model-specific battery estimates against your expected time on course.
Load the course and useful course points
If you rely on route guidance, load the course before race day and confirm it appears on the watch. Garmin describes courses as predefined paths for navigation; their behavior depends on device capabilities and course settings. A loaded course can be more informative when you add custom points such as aid stations or hazards. Garmin says compatible watches can display and notify you about course points, but support and point limits depend on the device. See Garmin’s course-points guidance and verify your watch’s manual. Do not assume every model offers the same navigation or notification behavior.

Reduce other battery drains selectively
GPS is not the only setting to review. Garmin’s Forerunner 970 manual suggests lowering screen brightness, shortening display timeout, limiting phone notifications, and turning off Bluetooth when connected features are not in use. These are examples from that model’s guidance; the controls and labels may differ or be unavailable on other watches. See Garmin’s Forerunner 970 battery tips.
Some watches offer Power Manager presets. Garmin says the “Max Battery” preset turns off customizable power features and sets GPS recording to UltraTrac, and cautions that presets are not available on every watch. Review what a preset changes before selecting it; it may disable features you intend to use. Details are in Garmin’s Power Manager guidance.

Decide whether external sensor data matters
Garmin says compatible Bluetooth or ANT+ sensors continue recording during UltraTrac. Its UltraTrac support article names the HRM-Pro Plus as an example of a heart rate monitor that can record speed and distance data. This is optional, and compatibility depends on the watch and sensor. External sensor data does not restore the frequent GPS track detail that UltraTrac reduces.

- Open the race activity profile. Confirm you are editing the activity you intend to use on race day.
- Set the satellite or GPS mode. Choose among the options available in that profile, using your watch’s manual to confirm their meaning and model-specific steps.
- Load and check the course. If you need navigation, verify the route on the watch and add supported course points for locations such as aid stations.
- Review display and connection settings. Reduce brightness, screen-on time, notifications, or unused connections only if those changes fit how you plan to use the watch.
- Test the complete configuration before the event. Start the same activity with the intended GPS mode, course, sensors, and display settings. Check that the watch records and presents the information you need, then consult model-specific battery estimates for your expected race duration.
