Vintage bracelets do not share one universal link-removal method. If you cannot identify the mechanism, a part resists, or the watch is valuable or fragile, stop and ask a watchmaker.
Identify the bracelet before adjusting it
Examine the underside, link sides and clasp before using a tool. Look for arrows, screw slots, link openings and clasp adjustment positions. These clues can help identify the construction, but appearance alone is not enough to establish how a link comes apart. Check for instructions that match the watch or bracelet model; a procedure for one system may damage another.

For example, Orient’s guide to common pin-type bracelets describes an arrow-marked pin system. Seiko’s link-removal instructions cover a particular system and tool. Neither is a universal procedure for vintage bracelets.
Know what connects the links
- Push pins: Some compatible bracelets mark the pin-removal direction with arrows. On the arrow-marked type in Orient’s guide, push the pin out in the arrow’s direction and reinstall it from the opposite direction.
- Pins with collars: A small collar may retain the pin. Keep it with the pin as you work; losing or misplacing it can prevent a secure reassembly.
- Screws, clips and folded links: These need a method and tool suited to their construction. A pin pusher or hammer is not an all-purpose substitute. Professional guidance from certified master watchmaker David Christianson discusses the differences among link types.
- Spring bars: These may attach a bracelet to the watch case or clasp. That is a separate operation from removing a link pin, and should not be confused with link sizing.
Check the clasp adjustment first
Before removing links, see whether the clasp has adjustment holes that can improve the fit. Longines notes that many modern clasps have two or three adjustment positions, but that does not establish that a particular vintage clasp has them. Follow instructions for your clasp rather than assuming it works like a newer one.

For some very wide straps, you can use the long needle to push the watch link pin out a little further for easy removal.
- 【3PCS punch pins of different diameter】Three different diameter punches for different strap pin diameters, compatible with a wider range of watch straps.
- 【Instruction manual】The instruction manual(in English) combines pictures and text to explain to you in detail the right way to use the tool, avoiding wrong operation to damage your watch, and helping you to solve watch problems at home.
Clasp adjustment is useful only within the range the clasp supports. Christianson cautions that moving the clasp too far can leave it hanging away from the bracelet, where it may catch on a sleeve or table edge. Make small changes and check how the bracelet sits before deciding that links must come out.
Adjust only when the method is confirmed
If the bracelet’s construction is identified and its instructions support home adjustment, work slowly and keep every component under control. The following checklist is a conservative approach, not permission to use one method on every vintage bracelet.

- Document the original arrangement. Photograph the bracelet front and underside, the clasp and the sides of the links. Support the watch on a soft, clear work surface.
- Locate the model-specific instructions. Confirm the connection type and the correct tool and direction. Do not infer the mechanism from a similar-looking bracelet.
- Try supported clasp adjustment first. If the clasp has adjustment positions, use them according to its instructions and check the fit on your wrist.
- Use only the specified method. If the instructions match the bracelet, use the appropriate tool and direction. Orient identifies a pin tool, holder, hammer and bracelet adjuster for compatible pin-type bracelets; that does not make them appropriate for other constructions.
- Keep parts in order. Capture each removed link and keep pins, collars, screws, spring bars or other small parts together. Retain them in removal order so you can restore the bracelet if needed.
- Reassemble and inspect. Use the correct parts and orientation. Check that each fastener is seated as the maker specifies and does not protrude. Gently inspect the joint; if it is loose, damaged or uncertain, do not wear the watch.
- Save the removed links and hardware. Keep them with the watch for future fit changes, restoration or resale.
Set a secure, comfortable fit
A well-fitted bracelet should feel secure and comfortable, with the clasp sitting appropriately beneath the wrist. The American Watchmakers-Clockmakers Institute’s archived 1988 article recommends balancing adjustment across both sides so the watch stays centered and the clasp sits behind the wrist. Treat that as a useful aim, not a rule that overrides the bracelet’s design or a watchmaker’s judgment.

Do not trade security for a looser feel: after adjustment, check that the bracelet remains connected and the fasteners sit correctly before wearing it. Seiko warns that a protruding pin can injure the wearer or catch and damage clothing.

When to stop and take it to a watchmaker
Longines recommends a certified watchmaker for vintage watches. A professional is also the safer choice if you cannot identify the link system, lack a tool that fits it, or find corrosion, damage or a bent part. Stop if a pin will not move with the specified tool, or if the reassembled link does not feel secure.
For a particularly valuable, fragile or historically significant watch, avoid experimenting even if a similar bracelet seems straightforward. The cost of a fitting service is preferable to damaging an original bracelet or losing a small, hard-to-replace component.
