To size a field watch, measure your wrist where you plan to wear it, then compare the watch’s lug-to-lug length with the flat span across the top of your wrist. Case diameter helps show how large the dial will look, but it cannot tell you by itself whether the lugs will overhang. Once on, the watch should feel secure without pinching, digging in, restricting movement, or repeatedly catching on your sleeves.
What to measure before choosing a field watch
Wrist circumference for the strap
Wrap a soft tape around your wrist at the spot where you want the watch to sit. Keep it snug but comfortable, not tight. If you do not have a soft tape, use a piece of string or a narrow paper strip: wrap it around your wrist, mark where the ends meet, then measure it flat against a ruler. This measurement helps you assess strap length, but it does not determine the best case size. JS Watch Co. Reykjavik’s guide recommends measuring at the point where you want the bracelet to sit.

Flat wrist span for the watch head
Separately measure the relatively flat area across the top of your wrist. Compare that span with the watch’s lug-to-lug length—the distance from the tip of one lug to the tip of the opposite lug. If the lugs extend beyond the sides of the flat area, the watch may look or feel oversized. This is a useful screening check, not a guarantee: curved or short lugs can sit differently from long, straight ones.

Check the specifications for the exact reference you are considering. The most useful measurements are lug-to-lug length, case diameter, case thickness, and lug width. Diameter describes the case’s width across the dial area; lug-to-lug better indicates how much wrist space the watch occupies. Lug width matters when choosing a replacement strap, because the strap must fit the space between that watch’s lugs.

What size field watch should I buy?
There is no single ideal case diameter for every wrist. Longines offers broad, general wristwatch suggestions of 32–36 mm for wrists under 6.3 inches in circumference, 36–42 mm for wrists from 6.3 to 7 inches, and 42–46 mm for wrists above 7 inches. These are manufacturer guidelines, not field-watch-specific rules or guarantees of comfort. Use them as a starting point, then consider lug-to-lug length, thickness, lug shape, wrist profile, strap, and your own preference. Longines explains its general size guidance here.
Published specifications illustrate why diameter alone can mislead: a field-watch buying guide lists a 38 mm Hamilton Khaki Field Mechanical with 46.5 mm lug-to-lug and a 37 mm Seiko SNK809 with 46 mm lug-to-lug. Those figures are published specifications, not hands-on fit measurements. The smaller diameter does not necessarily mean a dramatically shorter footprint. The field-watch size guide discusses these examples.

Is a 40 mm field watch too big?
Not automatically. A 40 mm case may wear comfortably on one wrist and feel too wide or tall on another. Compare its lug-to-lug measurement with your flat wrist span, then try it on if possible. Check whether the case stays clear of the sides of your wrist and whether its thickness or lugs interfere when you bend your hand.

A 6.5-inch wrist falls within Longines’ broad 6.3–7-inch category, for which it suggests 36–42 mm case diameters. That range is only an initial reference. Measure your flat wrist span and compare it with the specific watch’s lug-to-lug length; watches in the same diameter range can have different footprints and shapes.

How to check the fit when wearing it
Position the watch and move naturally
A practical starting position is just above the wrist bone. A general wearing guide recommends a secure fit that does not pinch and leaves room for natural movement. CY Watches’ wearing guide describes that as the usual placement. Wear the watch for a few minutes and bend your hand, rotate your wrist, and move as you normally would.
- Check that the case does not dig into your wrist when you bend your hand.
- Notice whether the watch constantly rotates, slides onto your hand, or leaves deep marks.
- Make sure the band does not pinch or restrict ordinary wrist movement.
- Try it with the sleeves you commonly wear; recurring cuff snags may make that watch inconvenient for daily use.
A still photo cannot show how a watch shifts during movement, so judge the fit while wearing it rather than by appearance alone.

How tight should a watch be?
It should stay reasonably stable without feeling restrictive. If it pinches, digs in, leaves deep marks, or interferes with movement, loosen or readjust it. If it slides around or repeatedly migrates onto your hand, try a different adjustment. There is no single fit that suits every strap, wrist, or wearer.

Straps
Use an adjustment hole to find a comfortable position. If the strap is uncomfortable or its tail is unwieldy, a different length or material may work better. Confirm the watch’s exact lug width before ordering another strap; field watches do not all share one width.

JS Watch Co. Reykjavik gives an example of adding 0.5–1 cm to the wrist measurement for a standard strap fit, or 1–2 cm for a looser fit. That is the maker’s guidance, not a universal formula: strap style, closure design, and the way a particular strap is measured can change what length works. See the maker’s measuring guide.
Metal bracelets
Bracelet sizing depends on its link and clasp construction. Screw-pin links require appropriate tools and a procedure suited to that type of pin. Fossil’s watch-care training discusses identifying the pin type before removing links. If you cannot identify the construction or do not have the right tools, ask a watch professional to size the bracelet rather than forcing a pin or damaging a link. Fossil’s watch-care material covers bracelet adjustment.
