Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Turn off Auto-Launch Audio Apps to stop the Apple Watch from automatically switching to a playback screen when audio starts elsewhere. Depending on your watchOS version, find the control under Settings → General → Wake Screen or a newer Auto-Launch menu. This does not remove Now Playing: you can still open it when you want to.
Turn off automatic audio-app launching
On many watchOS versions, the setting is on the Watch itself:
- Press the Digital Crown and open Settings.
- Tap General, then Wake Screen.
- Turn Auto-Launch Audio Apps off.
This is the long-established path described in Apple Support Community guidance. It changes whether an audio app takes over the display; it does not stop playback or disable the Now Playing app.
If you do not see that control under Wake Screen, check Settings → General → Auto-Launch → Live Activity Settings → Media Apps. The exact menu and label can vary by watchOS version; users have reported this newer organization, but it is not a universal path. Look for the media-app or audio-app auto-launch control and turn it off if present. A user report describes the newer menu arrangement.

Identify what is appearing
“Now Playing” can mean several different things. The auto-launch control addresses the full-screen audio app appearing automatically; it does not necessarily remove every media indicator.

- Full-screen Now Playing app: Playback controls have taken over the display. The auto-launch setting is the first thing to change.
- Now Playing complication: A watch-face shortcut remains visible even when the app is not open. Remove or replace it separately.
- Smart Stack media card: A widget or Live Activity can show current playback without being the full-screen app.
- A Music, Podcasts, Spotify, Audible, or other app screen: A third-party app may be opening its own interface, which may have separate app or notification controls.
- Notification: A notification is not the same as an app launching. Adjust notifications separately in the Watch app or in the originating app.
Remove Now Playing from the watch face
If the Now Playing shortcut remains on your face after auto-launch is off, edit the face. The exact gestures and available slots depend on the face:
- Touch and hold the watch face, then tap Edit.
- Swipe to the complication screen.
- Select the Now Playing complication and replace it with another complication or an empty option, if the face offers one.
- Press the Digital Crown or tap the face to finish.
Handle a Smart Stack media card separately
A media card in the Smart Stack is not proof that the full Now Playing app has launched. Scroll to the Smart Stack and, if the interface offers the option, touch and hold the relevant widget to remove or change it. You can also leave the card in place and simply avoid tapping it. Whether and how a widget can be removed depends on watchOS.

Check HomePod playback as a separate trigger
Apple says Now Playing can launch automatically when the Watch is near a HomePod that is playing audio. Apple’s watchOS 26 guide also explains how to open Now Playing manually. If the interruption happens only near a HomePod, turn off the audio auto-launch control, check for a complication or Smart Stack card, and move away from the HomePod briefly to see whether proximity is involved. The setting should not be assumed to suppress every HomePod-related playback indicator in every software version.
Open Now Playing manually when you need it
Turning off automatic launch leaves manual controls available. Apple lists these options:

- Open the Now Playing app from the app list.
- Tap a Now Playing complication, if you kept one on the face.
- When media is playing, open the Smart Stack and tap its Now Playing card.
- Where available, turn the Digital Crown upward from the watch face and tap the currently playing item in the Smart Stack.
If Now Playing still opens
Work through these checks in order, testing playback again after the relevant change:
- Confirm you changed the setting on the Watch paired with the iPhone you are using.
- If Now Playing is already open, close the app, stop playback, then start playback again to test the setting.
- Remove a Now Playing complication and check whether the visible item is instead a Smart Stack widget, Live Activity, or notification.
- Test more than one source, such as Apple Music, a podcast, and HomePod audio. If only one third-party app triggers the behavior, update that app and check its Watch companion, notification, and Live Activity settings.
- Restart the Apple Watch and paired iPhone, then test again. Apple Support Community discussions include reports of the behavior persisting after the switch was off; restarting is a troubleshooting step, not a guaranteed fix. See one report and another.
- Install available watchOS and iOS updates if your devices support them.
If the Watch shows an app after you raise your wrist, rather than switching when audio starts, check whether the App Switcher is involved. Apple’s Auto-Select Focused App setting is under Settings → Accessibility → Auto-Select Focused App; it controls which app the App Switcher selects, not audio auto-launch. See Apple’s explanation.

Auto-Launch is not Apple Music AutoPlay
Auto-Launch Audio Apps controls whether an audio app appears automatically on the Watch. Apple Music’s AutoPlay is a queue feature that adds similar songs after the current queue; it does not control whether Now Playing opens. Apple says disabling AutoPlay on one device affects that device only. See Apple’s guide to playing music on Apple Watch.
The system setting is also not a general control for Bluetooth routing, Handoff, audio notifications, volume, or whether playback continues on an iPhone, Watch, AirPods, or HomePod. A third-party Watch app may have its own launch behavior; Apple documents a developer-only opt-out mechanism for companion apps, not a consumer setting: handleRemoteNowPlayingActivity() and PUICAutoLaunchAudioOptOut.
