Adjust the band for a snug but comfortable fit, and move sleeves, bracelets, or other objects away from the contact area. If the problem persists, check your wrist orientation and Wrist Detection; Unlock with iPhone can make unlocking more convenient, but it does not fix a contact problem.
1. Check the fit and contact area
Apple recommends wearing the watch flat on top of the wrist, with the rear sensor touching your skin. The fit should be snug but comfortable. Adjust the band if the watch shifts or lifts away from your skin, but do not make it so tight that it causes discomfort or irritation.
- Position the watch flat on top of your wrist.
- Adjust the band so the rear sensor maintains skin contact.
- Move sleeves, bracelets, or other objects that sit between the watch and your wrist.
- Clean and dry the watch’s underside and the contact area.
If your current band cannot maintain that fit, a compatible replacement band may help. Check compatibility with your Apple Watch model and case size. A different band is not guaranteed to stop passcode prompts if the cause is unrelated to fit.
2. Check your wrist and orientation
Apple notes that scars or tattoos where the watch sits can affect wrist detection. If relevant, try wearing the watch on your other wrist. Set the corresponding wrist and crown position in Settings > General > Orientation so the watch uses the correct orientation.

3. Verify Wrist Detection
Wrist Detection is the feature that lets Apple Watch recognize when it is being worn and manage automatic locking. Check that it is enabled before considering turning it off.
- On the watch, open Settings.
- Tap Passcode.
- Check Wrist Detection.
Apple’s guidance covers unexpected locking while the watch is being worn, but it does not establish wrist detection as the only possible cause of every repeated passcode request.

4. Try Unlock with iPhone
Unlock with iPhone is a convenience setting that can reduce manual passcode entry when you unlock the watch. It does not identify or correct an underlying wrist-detection issue.
- Open the Watch app on your iPhone.
- Tap My Watch, then Passcode.
- Turn on Unlock with iPhone.
Keep the iPhone within normal Bluetooth range, approximately 33 feet (10 meters), for this feature to work. This is an approximate operating range, not a guarantee; obstacles or interference can affect the connection. If Bluetooth is off on the watch, unlock it by entering the passcode on the watch.

5. Understand the trade-off before turning off Wrist Detection
Apple says that turning off Wrist Detection means the watch no longer locks or unlocks automatically. Depending on the model, software version, and region, it can also affect features such as automatic Fall Detection emergency calling, heart-rate tracking and notifications, background Blood Oxygen and respiratory-rate measurements, sleep tracking, some Activity measurements, noise measurements and notifications, tap gestures, and wrist flick. Apple Pay may prompt for the passcode when authorizing a payment with the side button.
Feature availability varies, so read the confirmation screen on your watch and check current guidance for your model and software before changing the setting. Treat turning Wrist Detection off as a trade-off, not a routine fix.

6. Know when a passcode request is expected
Apple Watch locks automatically when it determines it is not being worn. A passcode request after removing the watch is therefore expected when Wrist Detection is enabled. If the watch keeps locking while you wear it despite a stable, comfortable fit and clear sensor contact, contact Apple Support or an authorized service channel for diagnosis rather than assuming a specific hardware fault.

FAQ
Why does my Apple Watch keep asking for its passcode while I am wearing it?
One possibility is that the watch is not consistently detecting wrist contact. Check that it sits flat, the rear sensor touches your skin, and no sleeve, bracelet, or other object is between the watch and wrist. Scars or tattoos at the contact area may also affect detection.
