The most useful test you can run is a specification check: compare the watch, its caseback, its dial and its paperwork against what Hanhart publishes for this exact edition. A mismatch is a strong reason to stop and ask questions. A match is not proof of authenticity. Hanhart’s published details rule out some look-alikes and near-misses, but no visible checklist can independently verify an individual watch, and this article is explicit about where that limit sits.
Start with the edition Hanhart actually published
Hanhart’s product page for the 417 ES Heritage Flyback, 39 mm, Steve McQueen Limited Edition No. 1 describes a 39 mm watch limited to 300 pieces worldwide. The page is the reference point for everything below. Do not check a listing against a generic 417 ES page, because the standard 42 mm model is a different watch with different published details.
Case, crystal and caseback
- Case: 39 mm diameter, stainless steel with satin and polished surfaces.
- Bezel: fluted, bidirectionally rotating, with a red insert.
- Pusher: red HyCeram pusher.
- Crystal: convex, internally anti-reflective sapphire with a high-domed profile.
- Caseback: screwed sapphire display back, engraved with a limitation number out of 300.
Movement and functions
Hanhart lists a hand-wound Sellita AMT5100 M at 28,800 A/h and 4 Hz, with 23 jewels and a 58-hour power reserve after full winding. The listed functions are flyback, small seconds, a 30-minute counter, central chronograph seconds and seconds stop. Because the caseback is a display back, the movement should be visible through it. Check that what you can see matches the listed calibre and layout, and note that the caseback photo is the most direct way to verify the movement from a listing.
Dial, luminous material, strap and buckle
- Dial: black, with the historic Hanhart logo and a Steve McQueen signature.
- Luminous material: Super-LumiNova Light Old Radium GL on the numerals and hands.
- Strap: dark brown leather with a lower band and a 20 mm lug width.
- Buckle: pin buckle with the historic logo.
Compare it with the standard 417 ES 42 mm

A watch that matches the standard model’s solid caseback, consecutive serial or 21 mm lugs is not the Steve McQueen edition as Hanhart describes it. That may mean it is a different model or that a listing is inaccurate. It does not, by itself, establish that the watch is counterfeit.
Check the paperwork and the seller’s photos
Hanhart’s official product material for this edition states that the watchmaker who builds the chronograph in Hanhart’s manufacture also adds their signature to the back of the card. Compare that detail with the card the seller shows. A card that lacks the described signature, or a seller who cannot say what the card contains, deserves further questions. The signature is a detail to compare, not a verification step on its own, because a card can be copied or moved from another watch.

When you assess a listing or a watch you already own, ask for the following. These are practical requests, not an official Hanhart procedure.
- Sharp, unedited photographs of the dial, showing the logo and signature at normal lighting.
- A photograph of the caseback, with the limitation number legible and shown out of 300.
- A photograph of the movement through the display back.
- Photographs of the bezel, pusher and strap buckle.
- Photographs of the full card, front and back.
- Written details of where and when the watch was bought and any proof of purchase.
Measure the lug width with calipers if you have the watch in hand. A reading that is clearly 21 mm rather than 20 mm conflicts with the published specification and is worth raising with the seller.

Where the specification check stops
Hanhart’s product pages describe the watch. They do not offer a counterfeit checklist, a public serial-number lookup or an authentication service. No independent study, regulator, court or standards body was identified that publishes a counterfeit rate or an authentication statistic for this model, so this article does not offer one. Treat every check above as a way to find inconsistencies, not as a guarantee.
For a definitive answer about a specific watch, contact Hanhart directly or an authorized Hanhart retailer. Ask whether they can inspect the watch, what records they need, and what documentation they can confirm. Hanhart’s pages do not say what response time to expect, so do not assume a reply or an inspection will be offered.

What to do with a mismatch
- Diameter, caseback, numbering or lug width does not match the Limited Edition page: the seller may be describing the standard 417 ES or a different model. Ask for clarification in writing before proceeding.
- Dial, bezel or pusher differs from the published colours or logos: request close-up photographs and compare them with Hanhart’s product images before deciding.
- Movement not visible or not matching the Sellita AMT5100 M listing: request a caseback photo under good light. If it cannot be provided, treat the listing as unverified.
- All visible details match but the seller cannot supply the card or records: a match alone does not settle the question. Seek an answer from Hanhart or an authorized retailer before paying.
Searching for the exact model name is a reasonable way to find listings to compare, but a listing’s presence on a marketplace is not evidence that the watch is genuine or that the seller is authorized.
