A vintage watch can be genuine and still have a refinished dial, replacement hands, a service part, or components mixed from different examples. To assess what has changed, first identify the exact reference and period, then compare the dial, hands, lume, case and other components with credible examples of that configuration. Treat visual differences as clues—not proof—and use records or a qualified watchmaker when the evidence is incomplete.

Start by identifying the exact watch

Record the brand, model or reference, serial details where appropriate, and approximate production period. Then check whether the movement, dial, hands, bezel and bracelet are plausible for that specific configuration. A watch assembled from genuine parts may still combine components that do not belong together.

A mismatch is a reason to investigate, not proof of fraud. Models can vary, and manufacturers may fit replacement parts during service. Compare the watch with credible examples of the same reference and period rather than relying on a broad resemblance to the brand.

Inspect the dial for signs of refinishing

Compare the logo, lettering, minute track, indices and small text with documented examples of the same reference. A redial may have fuzzy print edges, flat-looking printing, or lettering whose size, spacing or placement differs from factory examples. A 10× loupe can help you examine these details, but no single visual cue establishes that a dial was refinished. Watchuseek’s redial guide describes visual clues to look for.

Neither a clean dial nor an aged one settles the question. Condition, lighting in photographs and model-specific details all affect appearance. The useful test is a careful comparison with reliable examples and any available records—not whether the dial simply looks old or new.

Compare the hands and lume

Check whether the hands’ shapes and lengths are correct for the reference, and whether their finish and apparent aging make sense beside the dial. Lume that looks noticeably different between the hands and dial may indicate reluming or replacement. It remains a clue, not a conclusion: service dials and replacement parts can create or complicate an apparent aging mismatch. Fratello’s overview of lume in vintage watches provides context for these comparisons.

Check the case, bezel and bracelet

Compare the case profile, edges and finishing with examples of the same reference. Polishing can soften edges and blur details, but photographs may not reveal how much material was removed or whether the case originally had a different finish. A genuine case can have been polished.

Check the bezel and bracelet configuration against the reference and period, too. A matching brand name does not establish that a component is original to that particular watch. Online photographs can help identify questions to investigate, but they cannot reliably show every detail of case geometry or finishing. Hodinkee’s explanation of polished watch cases discusses what polishing can change.

Ask for service records and specific disclosures

Request service invoices, prior appraisals and any serial-linked manufacturer records the brand offers. Ask directly whether the dial, hands, crown, bezel, bracelet, movement or another component was replaced, refinished or returned after service. A general statement that a watch was “serviced” may not identify which parts changed.

Records can support the watch’s history, but a document describing its original factory configuration does not by itself prove that the current watch is unchanged. Archive availability and record detail vary by manufacturer; there is no universal service established for every brand. Chrono24’s vintage-watch guide discusses the importance of checking a watch’s details and history.

When to get a hands-on assessment

Consult a watchmaker experienced with the relevant brand and period when you need to check the movement, hidden markings or internal components. A loupe, online photo comparison or seller description cannot conclusively authenticate a watch or verify concealed parts. Ask the specialist to distinguish direct observations from inferences and to state what remains unknown.

Compare candidate watches on specific evidence

If you are choosing between two examples, assess them across the same criteria rather than relying on a broad condition label:

  • Reference correctness: Do the dial, hands, bezel, movement and bracelet fit the exact reference and period?
  • Dial and lume: Does the printing match documented examples? Is there evidence or disclosure of refinishing, reluming or a service dial?
  • Case condition: Are the edges and finish consistent with the reference, and has polishing been disclosed?
  • Service history: Are invoices or records available, and do they identify parts that were replaced?
  • Evidence quality: Are there clear photographs and credible documentation, or is an in-person specialist assessment needed?

Originality and service condition matter differently depending on what you want from the watch. A watch may be genuine and wearable without being fully original. Certification criteria used by a particular platform are not a universal definition of originality; Chrono24’s certification criteria describe that platform’s own program.

Do not assume a universal value penalty

Whether restoration or a replacement part affects desirability or price depends on the watch, the component, the quality of the work, documentation and the buyer’s priorities. The sources cited here do not establish a general percentage reduction or model-independent valuation rule. Treat any specific value claim as something that needs evidence for the watch in question.
