Turn off Always-on Display on the watch
- Wake the Pixel Watch.
- Swipe down from the top of the screen.
- Tap Settings.
- Tap Display.
- Scroll down to Always-on screen.
- Turn the switch off.
The dimmed watch face should disappear when the watch is idle. This works on Pixel Watch models using compatible Wear OS software and does not require a computer, reset, or third-party app.
Turn it off from the phone app
You can also change the setting through the Wear OS app or the relevant Pixel Watch companion app:

What changes after AOD is disabled?
Turning off Always-on screen stops the persistent idle display; it does not disable the watch. You can still wake the screen by tapping it or pressing the crown or side button. Wrist-raise or tilt-to-wake will continue to work if that feature is enabled.

Notifications, alarms, and other alerts may still wake the display. If you want the watch to remain dark during a particular situation, use one of the temporary modes below.

Choose the right alternative
| Goal | Setting | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Stop the idle display every day | Always-on screen: Off | Removes the persistent idle watch face while preserving normal watch use. |
| Keep the watch dark temporarily | Theater mode | Turns off the screen and suppresses notifications and incoming calls. |
| Reduce overnight interruptions | Bedtime mode | Disables AOD and notifications; depending on the watch and mode behavior, it may also restrict screen wake, touch, and tilt-to-wake. |
| Save power when the battery is low | Battery Saver | Disables AOD and tilt-to-wake as part of broader power-saving changes. |
Use Theater mode for a dark screen temporarily
From the watch face, swipe down to open Quick Settings and tap the Theater mode icon. This is useful in cinemas, meetings, bedrooms, or other short periods when light and interruptions are unwelcome.
Theater mode is not simply another name for turning off AOD: it also suppresses notifications and incoming calls. Turn it off again when you want normal alerts.

- Google Pixel Watch has a beautiful circular, domed design and new experience with Wear OS by Google, so it’s easy to get help at a glance
- Stay on top of activity, calories burned, and more with Fitbit activity tracking
- Track your heart rate and get insight into your sleep
- Save time with things like Google Wallet for contactless payments, turn-by-turn directions using Maps, and event notifications from Calendar
- Stay connected and productive wherever you go; respond to messages, manage your inbox, and make calls right from your wrist
Google describes Theater mode, Bedtime mode, and Battery Saver in its Pixel and Wear OS modes guide.
Use Bedtime mode overnight
For sleep tracking or overnight wear, Bedtime mode is usually more suitable than changing AOD alone. Google says it disables Always-on Display and notifications, helping reduce light, interruptions, and overnight battery drain.
Best Value
- The Google Pixel Watch 3 is designed for performance, with advanced fitness from Fitbit[1,2]; the 45mm screen is twice as bright and 40% larger than before, making it easier to see your stats and info[1]
- Maximize your performance with advanced running features; build custom run workouts and get real-time guidance and advanced form tracking[3]
- Enhance your run routine with Fitbit Premium; Google AI uses your goals, past runs, and readiness to power personalized run recommendations[3]
- Know what your body is ready for each day with readiness; it uses sleep, resting heart rate, and heart rate variability to show if you’re ready to take on a workout or prioritize recovery[3]
- Cardio load measures how hard your heart works so you can see how hard you’ve pushed; compare trends to see if you’re under- or over-training[3]
Behavior and availability can vary by Pixel Watch generation and software version. Bedtime mode also affects more interactions than AOD, so it may not be ideal during the day.
See Google’s Pixel Watch battery and overnight-use guidance.
Use Battery Saver when power is running low
Battery Saver also turns off Always-on Display and tilt-to-wake. It is useful when you need the watch to last until you can charge it, but it changes more than the display setting. Choose it only when those broader power-saving trade-offs are acceptable.
If “Always-on screen” is missing
- Use the watch’s Settings app rather than the phone app.
- Open Settings → Display and scroll to the bottom.
- Look for Always-on screen, Always-on display, or similar wording.
- Restart the watch and check again.
- Install available watch and companion-app updates.
Labels and locations can differ by model and Wear OS version. As a temporary workaround, use Theater mode for a short quiet period or Battery Saver when you need broader power reductions.
Do not confuse AOD with screen timeout
Always-on screen controls whether a dimmed watch face remains visible while the watch is idle. Screen timeout controls how long the fully active display stays on after you use it. Shortening screen timeout does not necessarily disable Always-on Display; use the dedicated AOD switch for that.
