Restarting, screen controls, Sleep Mode, or Do Not Disturb are the alternatives.
Fitbit model names matter more than the product family name. Use the instructions below for the exact generation, especially if the tracker is frozen or you are trying to preserve unsynced activity.
Key takeaways
- Versa Lite and Versa 2 shut down through Settings > About > Shutdown, while Versa 3 and Versa 4 use Settings > Shut down.
- Charge and Inspire trackers generally do not offer a normal full-power-off command; restarting, screen controls, Sleep Mode, or Do Not Disturb are the practical alternatives.
- Restarting a Fitbit is different from a factory reset: a restart is intended to preserve activity data, while a factory reset can remove unsynced data and settings.
- Several Charge and Inspire restart procedures require the charging cable, but an ordinary Versa shutdown does not.
- Charge 5, Charge 6, and Luxe share a charging cable, while the Versa 2 cable is not compatible with the original Versa or Versa Lite Edition.
How to turn off your Fitbit: switch off Versa, Charge or Inspire devices
The correct way to turn off your Fitbit depends on the model: Versa Lite, Versa 2, Versa 3, and Versa 4 provide a shutdown command, but most Charge and Inspire trackers do not. Charge and Inspire owners should restart the device, turn off its display, enable Sleep Mode or Do Not Disturb, or let the battery run down instead.
Before following a button combination, identify the exact model. Fitbit uses similar names across several generations, and the steps that work for a Versa 4 will not necessarily work for a Charge 5 or an original Inspire.

How do you shut down a Fitbit Versa?
Supported Versa generations can be fully powered down from the watch. The menu path differs between the earlier and later models.
| Model | Full shutdown path | How to turn it back on |
|---|---|---|
| Versa Lite | Open Settings, tap About, choose Shutdown, and confirm. | Press the back button. |
| Versa 2 | Open Settings, tap About, choose Shutdown, and confirm. | Press the back button. |
| Versa 3 | Open Settings, tap Shut down, and confirm. | Press and hold the button until the watch vibrates. |
| Versa 4 | Open Settings, tap Shut down, and confirm. | Press and hold the button until the watch vibrates. |
| Original Versa | The original Versa does not have the same documented normal shutdown path in these instructions; use its restart procedure if the watch is frozen. | Restart by holding the left button and bottom-right button together for 10 seconds until the Fitbit logo appears. |
Google’s official Fitbit shutdown guidance covers the distinction between models that expose a shutdown command and trackers that do not.
How do you restart a Fitbit Versa?
A restart is useful when a Versa is frozen, fails to sync, shows a blank display, or stops tracking. For Versa Lite, Versa 2, Versa 3, and Versa 4, press and hold the button for 10 seconds until the Fitbit logo appears, then release the button. For the original Versa, press and hold the left button and bottom-right button together for 10 seconds until the Fitbit logo appears, then release both buttons.
A restart is not a factory reset. According to Google’s Fitbit restart guidance, restarting is intended to recover the device without deleting activity data.

Can you turn off a Fitbit Charge 2, Charge 3, Charge 4, Charge 5 or Charge 6?
Charge trackers generally cannot be fully powered off through a normal menu command. If the aim is to stop a frozen Charge, use the restart procedure for the exact generation; if the aim is complete inactivity, disconnect the tracker and allow its battery to run down rather than treating that as a software shutdown.
| Model | Restart procedure | Expected result |
|---|---|---|
| Charge 2 | Connect the tracker to its charging cable and hold the tracker button for about 4 seconds. | The Fitbit logo appears and the tracker vibrates. |
| Charge 3 | Connect the tracker to its charging cable and hold the tracker button for about 8 seconds. | Release when the tracker vibrates and shows the restart indication. |
| Charge 4 | Connect the tracker to its charging cable and hold the tracker button for about 8 seconds. | Release when the tracker vibrates and shows the restart indication. |
| Charge 5 | Connect the tracker to its charging cable. Press the button on the flat end of the cable three times, pausing about one second between presses. | Wait for the Fitbit logo. |
| Charge 6 | Connect the tracker to its charging cable. Press the button on the flat end of the cable three times, pausing about one second between presses. | Wait for the Fitbit logo. |
These are recovery or restart steps, not full shutdown steps. Follow Google’s model-specific Fitbit restart instructions if the Charge screen is blank or the tracker is unresponsive.
How do you turn off a Fitbit Inspire 2 or Inspire 3?
Inspire trackers generally do not provide a normal full shutdown menu. Inspire 2 and Inspire 3 provide reboot or restart controls, and the original Inspire and Inspire HR use a charger-connected button procedure for recovery.
| Model | Restart or reboot procedure | When the tracker is unresponsive |
|---|---|---|
| Inspire 3 | From the clock screen, swipe down to Settings, open it, swipe up, tap Restart Device, then tap Restart. | Connect the tracker to its charging cable and hold its buttons for 10 seconds until it vibrates and shows the Fitbit logo. |
| Inspire 2 | Open Settings and tap Reboot Device. | Connect the tracker to its charging cable and hold both buttons for 10 seconds until it vibrates and shows the smile icon. |
| Original Inspire | There is no normal full-shutdown command in the documented procedure. | Connect the tracker to its charging cable and hold the button or buttons for about 5 seconds. Release when it vibrates and shows the smile icon. |
| Inspire HR | There is no normal full-shutdown command in the documented procedure. | Connect the tracker to its charging cable and hold the button or buttons for about 5 seconds. Release when it vibrates and shows the smile icon. |
For the exact button behavior and recovery sequence, compare the model with Google’s official Fitbit restart instructions.

What is the difference between shutdown, restart, screen off and factory reset?
Shutdown, restart, screen-off controls, and factory reset produce different results. Choosing the wrong option can either leave the tracker running or erase information that has not synced.
| Action | What it does | When to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Shutdown | Stops normal device operation on models that expose a shutdown command, such as supported Versa generations. | Use when you want the watch fully powered off. |
| Restart or reboot | Turns the device off and back on to recover from freezing, sync problems, blank displays, or missing tracking. | Use for a malfunctioning Charge, Inspire, or Versa. |
| Screen off | Turns off only the display; the tracker continues operating and recording supported activity. | Use when you want darkness without stopping tracking. |
| Factory reset | Erases the device and can remove unsynced data, alarms, goals, and notifications. | Use only when troubleshooting or preparing to transfer the device, after syncing important data. |
Google explains the difference between a restart and a reset in its Fitbit restart and recovery guidance. Do not choose a factory reset simply because you want the screen or tracker turned off.
How do you turn off the Fitbit screen without powering down the tracker?
Turn off only the screen when you want the Fitbit to keep recording but stop displaying light. Depending on the model, briefly cover the watch face, press a button, or turn your wrist away; supported devices may also use the display settings to control screen wake behavior.
Screen-off behavior does not power down the sensors, Bluetooth, or tracking functions. A Charge or Inspire that has no shutdown command can therefore remain active while its display stays dark. Google’s Fitbit navigation and screen-control guidance describes the supported ways to wake or darken the display.

Should you use Sleep Mode or Do Not Disturb?
Use Sleep Mode when you want a dimmer display, no wrist-raise screen wake, and suppressed notifications on a supported Fitbit. Use Do Not Disturb when you mainly want notifications and reminders suppressed without powering down the tracker.
Sleep Mode and Do Not Disturb are not the same as shutdown, and the two modes cannot be active at the same time on the documented devices. These controls are better choices than draining the battery when the goal is quiet operation, darkness, or fewer interruptions.

Restart the frozen Fitbit using the model-specific procedure rather than attempting a factory reset. Charge 2, Charge 3, Charge 4, and the unresponsive Inspire models need to be connected to their charging cable for the documented recovery steps, while Versa restarts use the watch button or buttons.
- Identify the model printed on the device, packaging, or Fitbit account.
- Connect the device to its correct charging cable if the procedure requires a charger.
- Hold the specified button or buttons for the documented time, or use the three-press procedure for Charge 5 and Charge 6.
- Release when the Fitbit logo, restart indication, vibration, or smile icon appears.
- Allow the device to restart and sync before considering a reset.
Need a charger to restart an unresponsive Fitbit?
A replacement Fitbit charging cable can be useful when the original cable is missing or when a Charge or Inspire is unresponsive and its restart procedure requires a connection to power. The cable is not needed for an ordinary Versa shutdown, and compatibility must be checked before buying.

Google’s charging guidance says that Charge 5, Charge 6, and Luxe use the same charging cable. The Versa 2 charging cable does not work with the original Versa or Versa Lite Edition. Check the exact model against Google’s Fitbit charging guide rather than buying one generic cable for every Fitbit family.
Which Fitbit action matches your goal?
| Your goal | Use this action | Do not use |
|---|---|---|
| Fully power down a Versa Lite, Versa 2, Versa 3, or Versa 4 | Use the model’s Settings shutdown command. | Do not factory-reset the watch. |
| Stop a frozen Fitbit | Restart using the exact model’s button or charger procedure. | Do not assume the normal shutdown path exists on Charge or Inspire. |
| Make the display dark | Turn off the screen or adjust screen-wake behavior. | Do not drain the battery unless complete inactivity is essential. |
| Silence notifications | Use Sleep Mode or Do Not Disturb. | Do not confuse notification suppression with powering down. |
| Erase the device before handing it to someone else | Sync first, then use the factory-reset procedure appropriate to the model. | Do not use a restart as a substitute for a reset. |
Frequently Asked Questions
Will restarting my Fitbit delete my steps?
Restarting a Fitbit is intended to preserve activity data, but a factory reset can erase unsynced activity, alarms, goals, and notifications. Sync the device before performing any reset.
Do I need a charger to restart a frozen Fitbit?
Charge and Inspire recovery procedures often require the device’s charging cable, especially when the tracker is unresponsive. An ordinary Versa shutdown does not require a charger.
What charger do I need for a Fitbit Charge or Inspire?
Charge 5, Charge 6, and Luxe use the same charging cable. The Versa 2 cable does not work with the original Versa or Versa Lite Edition, so verify the model before buying a replacement.
Does turning off the Fitbit screen turn off the tracker?
No. Turning off the screen, Sleep Mode, and Do Not Disturb change the display or notifications while the tracker continues operating; they do not fully power off the Fitbit.
The Bottom Line
Versa Lite, Versa 2, Versa 3, and Versa 4 can be fully shut down from Settings. Charge and Inspire trackers generally cannot be normally powered off, so restart them when frozen or use screen, Sleep Mode, or Do Not Disturb controls when you only want darkness or silence.
