If the paired iPhone is unavailable, you can erase the watch directly, but Activation Lock remains. Before selling or giving away a watch, make sure it is removed from the previous owner’s account; for a cellular model, remove the plan and contact the carrier separately if you need to cancel service.
How to unpair an Apple Watch using its paired iPhone
Keep the watch and paired iPhone near each other, then follow these steps:
- Open the Apple Watch app on the paired iPhone.
- Tap My Watch, then All Watches.
- Tap the information button beside the watch you want to unpair.
- Tap Unpair Apple Watch, then confirm the watch name.
- If the watch is a cellular model, choose whether to keep or remove its mobile data plan.
- Enter the associated Apple Account password when asked to disable Activation Lock.
- Confirm Unpair and wait for the process to finish.
Apple says this process erases the watch, restores it to factory settings, and removes Activation Lock. It attempts to create a backup on the iPhone that may be used when setting up another Apple Watch. Interface wording can vary by software version or language.

What happens when you unpair an Apple Watch?
Unpairing in the Watch app does more than erase local content. It removes the watch from its pairing relationship with the iPhone, restores factory settings, and removes Activation Lock after you authenticate with the associated Apple Account password. The process attempts to create a backup on the iPhone, which can help when setting up another Apple Watch.
Before you unpair: choose the right action

GPS + Cellular models: keep or remove the plan?
During unpairing, a cellular Apple Watch offers the option to keep or remove its mobile data plan.
- Keep the plan if you are keeping the watch and plan to pair it with an iPhone again using the same service.
- Remove the plan if you are transferring or selling the watch.
Removing the plan from the watch is separate from cancelling the carrier subscription. Contact the carrier if you need to cancel service. Carrier procedures and availability vary.
If you no longer have the paired iPhone
You can erase the watch directly, but this is not a complete unpair: Activation Lock remains enabled, and the associated Apple Account and password are still required for setup.

- On the Apple Watch, open Settings.
- Tap General > Reset.
- Tap Erase All Content and Settings.
- Enter the watch passcode if asked, then confirm Erase All.
If you have already given the watch away, Apple documents another route through Find My on iCloud.com: sign in, choose All Devices, select the Apple Watch, choose Erase Apple Watch, then use the X beside the watch to remove it from the account.
If you forgot the Apple Watch passcode
Apple’s reset procedure erases the watch but does not bypass Activation Lock. After resetting, setup still requires the Apple Account and password associated with the watch.
Reset the watch with its charger
- Place the Apple Watch on its charger and leave it there during the reset.
- Hold the side button until the power screen appears, then release it.
- Press and hold the Digital Crown until the Reset option appears.
- Tap Reset, then confirm again when prompted.
This charger requirement applies to the forgotten-passcode reset procedure, not to normal unpairing through the paired iPhone.
Preparing an Apple Watch for sale or a gift
Before handing over the watch:
- When possible, unpair it through the Apple Watch app on the paired iPhone.
- Enter the associated Apple Account password when asked, so Activation Lock is removed.
- For a cellular model, choose to remove the mobile data plan and contact the carrier separately if you need to cancel service.
- Confirm that setup no longer asks for your Apple Account.
If a watch has already been given away, use Find My on iCloud.com to erase it and then remove it from the account. A buyer should not accept a watch as ready to use if setup requests the previous owner’s Apple Account password. The previous owner must remove it from their account; resetting the watch again will not bypass Activation Lock.

Unpairing versus erasing
Unpair Apple Watch in the paired iPhone’s Watch app restores the watch to factory settings and removes Activation Lock after you enter the associated Apple Account password. It also attempts to create a backup on the iPhone.
Erase All Content and Settings on the watch erases its content but leaves Activation Lock enabled. Use this route if the paired iPhone is unavailable, then remove the watch from the associated account if it is changing owners.
Buying a used Apple Watch
Before buying a watch from someone else, confirm that it is erased and no longer linked to the previous owner’s account. If setup asks for the previous owner’s Apple Account password, Activation Lock is still on. Ask the previous owner to remove the watch from their account before you complete the purchase. For cellular models, confirm that the previous owner has removed the mobile data plan and cancelled service if needed.

Does erasing an Apple Watch remove Activation Lock?
No. Erasing directly from the watch leaves Activation Lock enabled. The associated Apple Account and password are still required unless the watch is removed from the account through the appropriate unpairing or Find My process.
Can I unpair an Apple Watch without its paired iPhone?
You can erase the watch directly, but Activation Lock remains. If it is changing owners, remove it from the associated account; if it has already been given away, Apple documents erasing it through Find My on iCloud.com and then removing it from the account.
Should I keep or remove the cellular plan?
Keep the plan if you are keeping and re-pairing the watch with the same service. Remove it when transferring the watch, and contact the carrier separately if you need to cancel the subscription.
Can I buy an Apple Watch that asks for the previous owner’s Apple Account?
Do not treat it as ready to use. That prompt means Activation Lock is still on; the previous owner must remove the watch from their account.
Do I need a charger to unpair an Apple Watch?
No charger is required for the normal unpairing process through the paired iPhone. Apple’s forgotten-passcode reset procedure does require the watch to remain on its charger.
