On a baseplate compass, set a map bearing by pointing the travel arrow from your location toward the destination, aligning the bezel’s orienting lines with the map’s north–south grid, and reading the bearing at the index line. To follow it, hold the compass level and turn until the magnetic needle’s north end sits inside the orienting arrow. Watch compass bezels can work differently, so use the procedure for your specific model.
Know which kind of compass bezel you have
A baseplate compass has a rotating bezel, an index line for reading a bearing, orienting lines and an orienting arrow for aligning with north, and a direction-of-travel arrow. The bezel turns independently of the baseplate, letting you set and retain a direction. REI explains these parts and the basic map-navigation method in its compass and map navigation guide.
A watch with a compass bezel may not have the same layout or use the same process. Its bezel markings and instructions are specific to the watch; the baseplate steps below should not be assumed to apply to every watch.
Set a bearing from a map with a baseplate compass
- Place the compass on the map. Point the direction-of-travel arrow from your current location toward your destination. Keep the baseplate aligned with the route between the two points.
- Turn the bezel to orient it to map north. Rotate it until the orienting lines are parallel with the map’s north–south grid lines. The bezel’s orienting arrow should point toward map north.
- Read the bearing. Read the degree marking at the index line. The bezel now records the direction set by the map and route alignment.
Check the arrows before reading: the direction-of-travel arrow points toward the destination, while the orienting arrow points toward map north when the orienting lines follow the map grid. Reversing the setup can produce a bearing 180 degrees off. Mapworld outlines this alignment and reversal warning in its guide to taking a bearing.

Follow the bearing in the field
- Hold the compass level and point its direction-of-travel arrow in front of you.
- Turn your body until the north end of the magnetic needle sits within the bezel’s orienting arrow.
- Walk in the direction indicated by the travel arrow, checking and restoring the needle-and-arrow alignment as you go.
REI distinguishes the orienting arrow, which aligns with the magnetized needle, from the direction-of-travel arrow, which points along the bearing you are following (REI compass and map navigation guide).
Account for the difference between map north and magnetic north
A map may reference grid north or true north, while a compass needle points to magnetic north. The angular difference is magnetic declination. If the map and compass use different north references, a bearing may need adjustment; the correct setting or procedure depends on the map convention and compass design. REI notes that declination adjustment varies by compass brand (REI compass and map navigation guide). Check your map and the manufacturer’s instructions rather than applying one universal bezel setting or formula.

Use a watch compass bezel according to its manual
Watch compass bezels are not interchangeable in their operation. For the Suunto Core 2, the user guide says to hold the watch horizontally, point the north needle in the intended direction, align the bezel’s north marking with the moving north segment, and proceed while maintaining that alignment. That is a model-specific method, not a general procedure for all compass watches (Suunto Core 2 User Guide).
Accuracy claims also vary by model. Seiko’s instructions for models with a compass bezel warn: “The compass is so designed to provide only a rough indication of directions, and should not be used where accuracy is critical.” Treat that as a limitation stated for those Seiko models, not as a claim about every compass or watch (Seiko compass-bezel instructions).
