The 1999 Omega De Ville Co-Axial Escapement Limited Edition marked the move of George Daniels’s co-axial escapement from a decades-long development effort into serially produced wristwatches. It paired that technical milestone with a restrained dress-watch design and was produced in three precious-metal and dial combinations. The model is historically important, but it is also a discontinued collectible whose condition and provenance matter as much as its name.

Why the 1999 De Ville matters

George Daniels developed the co-axial escapement as an alternative to the traditional lever escapement. Time+Tide reports that Daniels invented it in 1974, patented it in 1980, and spent years trying to find a manufacturer able to industrialize the design. Omega took on that challenge: the De Ville introduced the technology in 1999.

Time+Tide describes this edition as the first serially produced wristwatch to use the co-axial escapement. Omega’s own historical timeline places the brand’s introduction of the technology in 1999, although its timeline is broader and does not identify this specific limited edition. Time+Tide’s model history and Omega’s 1990s timeline support those respective accounts.

The significance is not that Omega invented the escapement, but that it brought Daniels’s design into serial production. The De Ville gave collectors a tangible early example of a technology that would become part of Omega’s modern mechanical-watch identity.

What the co-axial escapement changes

In a mechanical watch, the escapement meters the release of energy from the mainspring to keep the balance oscillating. Daniels’s co-axial design was intended to reduce sliding friction at the escapement compared with the conventional lever arrangement. Less friction can mean less dependence on lubrication at those contact points. Omega’s general description also associates its Co-Axial escapement with reduced friction, reduced lubrication needs, and longer-term accuracy: Omega’s Co-Axial overview.

That principle should not be mistaken for a maintenance-free watch. It does not mean the entire movement never needs service, and Omega’s current general explanation does not establish a service interval for this 1999 model. Daniels, as quoted by Time+Tide, said: “The performance in tests has been remarkable, showing improvement in long-term day-to-day use that cannot be equalled by the classic lever escapement.” The statement is presented there in the context of his work with Omega technicians, not as a test conducted by the article itself.

The movement: Omega Calibre 2500

The edition uses Omega Calibre 2500, based on the ETA 2892 and adapted to incorporate the co-axial escapement, according to Time+Tide. That distinction matters: this early production co-axial movement is not one of Omega’s later fully in-house calibres. Its importance lies in adapting an established movement architecture to make the new escapement viable for serial production.

Three reported metal and dial combinations

Time+Tide’s 2020 account reports three configurations, for a stated total of 2,100 watches:

Case metal Dial Reported production
Yellow gold Silvered 1,000
Red gold Midnight blue 1,000
Platinum Copper 100

These counts are the figures reported by Time+Tide in 2020; they are not presented here as independently verified Omega production records. The combinations make the edition more than one commemorative watch with different case finishes: metal and dial pairing are part of its identity, and should be checked when assessing a particular example.

Design of the yellow-gold example

Time+Tide’s detailed description focuses on a yellow-gold example with a 38 mm case. It has a stepped bezel, curved stepped lugs, small crown guards, Roman numerals at the cardinal points, a date aperture, luminous hands and markers, and a brown crocodile-leather strap. These particulars describe the example discussed in that account; they should not automatically be applied to every metal and dial variant.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

The dial’s stepped, pie-pan-like construction recalls Omega Constellation dials of the 1950s. That is a design comparison rather than an Omega archival claim. The date and luminous elements also give the watch a practical, wearable character alongside its formal precious-metal case—an interpretation consistent with Daniels’s interest in watches intended to be worn.

Daniels’s watch and the edition’s provenance

Time+Tide reports that Omega gave George Daniels watch number 000/999, which remained in his collection until his death in 2011. The watch appeared in Sotheby’s 2012 George Daniels Horological Collection auction; the article says Omega Museum bought it and retains it. The same account notes examples in the British Museum Clock & Watch collection and the Worshipful Company of Clockmakers Collection. These institutional and ownership details are reported by Time+Tide; they are not independently confirmed here against collection catalogues.

What to check when considering an example

The edition is discontinued. In 2020, Time+Tide said examples could be found through auctions and independent dealers. That article recorded nine Chrono24 listings with an average asking price of approximately AUD $12,000 at the time. It is a dated listing snapshot, not a current market valuation; no present-day inventory or price is established here.

Because the reported edition has several variants and the available evidence does not establish a model-specific service schedule, assess the individual watch rather than relying on its commemorative status or escapement alone. Useful points to verify include:

  • Variant and numbering: Check that the case metal and dial correspond to the claimed configuration, and ask for clear photographs of the reference and edition numbering.
  • Condition: Review the case, dial, hands, crown, and movement condition. Ask whether components have been replaced or refinished.
  • Originality: Confirm the originality of the hands, dial, crown, and strap or buckle where documentation is available; a strap is replaceable, but undocumented changes should be disclosed.
  • Service record: Request dated service documentation and have a qualified watchmaker or Omega service center assess the specific watch. The escapement’s friction characteristics do not establish that a given example can go without maintenance.
  • Provenance and transaction terms: Ask for supporting ownership records where relevant, and read the seller’s or auction house’s inspection, authenticity, and return terms before committing.

For a model-specific background and the reported edition details, see Time+Tide’s 2020 account. Omega’s 1990s timeline and Co-Axial overview provide the brand’s broader historical and technical context.
