An ordinary analog watch can help you estimate cardinal direction when the sun is visible: in the Northern Hemisphere, point the hour hand at the sun and use the midpoint between the hand and 12 as approximate south; in the Southern Hemisphere, point 12 at the sun and use the midpoint between 12 and the hour hand as approximate north. This is a rough orientation aid, not a reliable bearing for precise navigation.
How to estimate direction with a watch
Use an analog watch with a visible hour hand. Keep the dial level, and work out the midpoint along the shorter arc between the indicated positions.

Northern Hemisphere
- Hold the watch horizontally with its dial level.
- Turn it until the hour hand points toward the sun.
- Find the midpoint between the hour hand and the 12 o’clock marker. That direction is approximate south; north is directly opposite.
Facing the estimated south, east is to your left and west is to your right. This Northern Hemisphere method is described by Be Ready Utah and by the watch guidance from Citizen and Seiko.

Citizen and Seiko describe this reversed orientation in their manufacturer guidance. Do not apply the Northern Hemisphere setup unchanged in the Southern Hemisphere.

What a direction-marked bezel can—and cannot—do
If your watch has a rotating bezel marked with directions, you can use it to transfer the estimated south or north direction to the other rough cardinal directions. The bezel does not improve the underlying estimate or turn it into a precise bearing.
Some Seiko models have an additional, model-specific procedure for the compass bezel. The instructions for that procedure say to set the watch appropriately for local time and, when daylight-saving time applies, to set it one hour behind current time. This adjustment is not a universal rule for watch-compass methods; consult the instructions for your particular model. See Seiko’s compass-bezel instructions.

When the estimate may be misleading
You need to see the sun or know where it is in the sky. Latitude and season can affect the result: Seiko warns that its method may not work properly at lower latitudes during certain seasons, and Citizen notes that discrepancies can occur at different latitudes and in different seasons. The cited manufacturer guidance does not establish a numeric accuracy range, so do not treat the midpoint as a precise bearing.

When to use a conventional compass instead
Seiko’s model instructions describe the watch method as providing “only a rough indication of directions” and say it should not be used where accuracy is critical. For dependable navigation, carry a conventional hiking compass and learn to use it with a map; Be Ready Utah also discusses portable compasses for hikes. The watch-and-sun estimate is a possible backup for rough orientation, not a replacement for navigation equipment.
