The crown is the control on the side of a watch case. Depending on the watch, it can wind a mechanical movement, set the date or move the hands. A screw-down crown adds a threaded lock: loosen it before operating, then press it in and screw it down again as directed by the watch’s manual. Crown positions and water resistance vary by model, so the watch’s own instructions take precedence.
What the crown does
A stem connects the crown to the movement through a tube in the case. On a mechanical watch, turning the crown while it is fully pushed in can engage winding gears and wind the mainspring barrel. Pulling the crown out changes the mechanism’s connection so it can perform setting functions instead.

There is no universal position layout. On many watches, the first pulled position adjusts the date and the second adjusts the hands; some movements stop the seconds hand when the crown is pulled out. A watch without a date may have a position that does nothing, and electronic or radio-controlled watches can use different arrangements. Use the manual to identify the positions before turning or pulling the crown. If you are unsure what a position does, avoid experimenting: the function and setting procedure depend on the watch and movement.
Push-pull and screw-down crowns

How to operate a crown safely
- Identify the crown type. Check the manual to see whether it is push-pull or screw-down and how it should be handled.
- Unlock a screw-down crown first. Turn it to release the thread before pulling or operating it. Do not force a crown that resists.
- Select only the position you need. Use the manual to identify the winding, date-setting and hand-setting positions for that model.
- Return and secure the crown. Push it in when finished. If it is screw-down, screw it back down snugly as the watch’s instructions specify.

Does a screw-down crown make a watch waterproof?
No crown type alone establishes whether a watch is suitable for swimming or diving. A screw-down lock can help increase water resistance, but you must follow the stated water-resistance rating and operating instructions for the specific watch. Before exposing a watch to water, make sure its crown is correctly secured according to the manual. Do not infer a safe depth or activity from the presence of a screw-down crown.

When a crown needs service
A loose, bent or missing crown, or one that no longer screws down smoothly, is a model-specific repair issue. Crown and stem fit depend on the watch and movement, so a generic replacement part cannot be selected reliably from the watch type alone.
