How to Use an Analog Watch as a Compass

Use the sun and an analog watch to estimate the north–south line. The method differs by hemisphere and provides only approximate direction.

An analog watch and the sun can help you estimate the north–south line: in the Northern Hemisphere, point the hour hand at the sun; in the Southern Hemisphere, point the 12 toward it. The midpoint between the relevant watch mark and the hour hand indicates an approximate direction—not a precise bearing.

Before you start

  • Use the method only when the sun is visible.
  • Set your watch to the correct local time.
  • Hold the watch level so its face is horizontal.

The result is an estimate. Latitude, season, and timekeeping conventions can affect it, and the method becomes less accurate closer to the equator. Citizen Watch Global Network notes that discrepancies can occur at different latitudes and in different seasons; the Canadian Cadet Organizations also cautions about accuracy near the equator.

Find direction in the Northern Hemisphere

  1. Hold the watch horizontally.
  2. Turn it until the hour hand points toward the sun.
  3. Find the midpoint of the smaller angle between the hour hand and the 12 o’clock mark. That midpoint points approximately south; north is directly opposite.

This is the approach described by Citizen Watch Global Network and the Canadian Cadet Organizations. Citizen summarizes the technique this way: “You can estimate approximate compass directions using the positions of the hour hand and the sun as a guide.”

Find direction in the Southern Hemisphere

  1. Hold the watch horizontally.
  2. Turn it until the 12 o’clock mark points toward the sun.
  3. Find the midpoint between the 12 o’clock mark and the hour hand. That midpoint points approximately north; south is directly opposite.

The sun-facing reference is reversed from the Northern Hemisphere method. Keep the watch level and use the midpoint to establish the north–south line.

Account for daylight-saving time carefully

The Canadian Cadet Organizations explains its approximation in relation to the sun’s position at noon, or 1 p.m. during daylight-saving time. For the daylight-saving convention described in that lesson, it says to use 1 rather than 12 as the midpoint reference. Do not assume this adjustment applies identically across all time zones and clock conventions; follow the guidance applicable to your location if you use it.

Use the estimate without mistaking it for navigation

Once you have identified which end of the line is north or south, you can work out east and west from it. A watch with a compass-marked rotating bezel may make it easier to read other directions, but a bezel does not make this sun-based estimate precise.

This technique gives no map, distance, route, or way to avoid terrain hazards. For a hike, treat it as an orientation clue—not a route-finding system or replacement for proper navigation equipment. If you need dependable bearings, carry suitable navigation equipment, such as a basic hiking compass, and know how to use it. Outdoor guidance from UK Outdoor Skills likewise describes watch-based direction as approximate and advises carrying proper navigation equipment.
