After ending the workout, open Fitness on iPhone, scroll to Sessions, tap the workout, and review the saved route, splits, heart rate, effort, and other details.
The watch shows live information while you exercise, but Fitness on iPhone is the documented place to review the completed session in detail. The steps below cover permission, recording, workout views, route review, and the most common problems.
Key takeaways
- Apple Watch route tracking requires Location Services permission for Apple Watch Workout, set to “While Using the App.”
- Start an outdoor workout in the Workout app when you want a GPS route; Indoor Run and treadmill workouts should not be treated as route-recording sessions.
- During a workout, Apple Watch can show elapsed time, pace, distance, calories, heart rate, and other workout-specific metrics.
- After you finish, the documented route and complete workout history are found in Fitness on iPhone under Sessions.
- Apple recommends calibrating Apple Watch with about 20 minutes of normal outdoor walking or running in an open area when distance or pace seems inaccurate.
How to use Apple Watch route tracking and see your workout details
To use Apple Watch route tracking and see your workout details, enable Location Services for Apple Watch Workout, start an outdoor workout in the Workout app, and end it normally. Then open Fitness on iPhone, scroll to Sessions, select the workout, and review its route, splits, heart rate, effort, and other metrics.
The process has three separate stages: granting location permission, recording an outdoor workout, and reviewing the completed session in Fitness on iPhone. Completing only the first stage does not create a route; completing the workout without location permission may leave the route out of the summary.

Apple also documents the equivalent path on iPhone: open Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services > Apple Watch Workout, then select While Using the App. The exact wording or location of settings can change with the installed operating-system version, so use the labels shown on your devices. Apple’s workout-summary documentation identifies location permission as a prerequisite for route information in the summary.
If you are choosing a watch for outdoor workouts, the central requirement is access to the Apple Watch Workout app and its location permission—not a particular model named in this guide. Confirm the current model’s compatibility and workout features before buying.
How do you record an outdoor route on Apple Watch?
Open the Workout app, choose the relevant outdoor workout, and tap Start. For a run, Apple’s documented sequence is Workout > Outdoor Run > Start.

- Select an outdoor workout such as Outdoor Run, Outdoor Walk, or an appropriate outdoor cycling workout.
- Set a goal if you want one, or start without a goal.
- Tap Start and begin moving outdoors.
Choose an outdoor workout when you want a GPS-based route. The Apple Watch Workout app separates outdoor activities from indoor options, and Apple’s route guidance ties route display to route tracking and location permission. An Indoor Run or treadmill workout is therefore not the right recording mode for a normal outdoor map.
Apple describes the Workout app as the place to manage individual sessions, set goals, monitor progress, and review results. The Apple Watch Workout app guide provides Apple’s current documented starting workflow.
What workout details can you see while exercising?
Raise your wrist during the workout to see live metrics, then turn the Digital Crown to move between workout views. Available information depends on the workout type and the views enabled for that workout.

Apple lists goal completion, elapsed time, average pace, distance, calories burned, and heart rate among the statistics that may be available during a workout. The Apple guide to adjusting Apple Watch during a workout explains the live workout controls and metrics.
How do you customize Apple Watch workout views?
Customize the metrics shown for a particular workout from the Workout app:
- Open Workout on Apple Watch.
- Choose the workout type.
- Tap Views.
- Tap Include beside the views you want to use.
- Edit the Metrics or Metrics 2 sets as needed.
- Reorder the views if you want a different sequence during the session.
Workout views vary by workout type, so a running screen does not necessarily contain the same metrics as a cycling or walking screen. Apple’s custom workout views instructions explain how to include and arrange the available views.
Can Apple Watch compare a run with a previous route?
Yes. For supported outdoor running and cycling workouts, Apple Watch can use Race Route to compare the current session with a familiar route you have completed before.
Race Routes become available after the same route has been repeated with little to no deviation at least two times. Standard route recording shows where the completed workout took place; Race Route adds a comparison against a previous familiar run or cycle. Race Route is therefore different from simply saving a GPS map.

How do you end and save an Apple Watch workout?
End the workout from the workout screen so Apple Watch can save the session and generate its summary.
- Swipe right on the workout screen.
- Tap End.
- Turn the Digital Crown to move through the summary.
- Tap the End button at the top when finished reviewing it.
Apple notes that the heart-rate sensor remains active for three minutes after the workout ends so Apple Watch can measure post-workout heart rate. Ending the session is important: simply stopping movement does not replace the End command.
The saved summary may contain the route as well as workout details, splits, heart rate, and effort. Apple states that “The summary includes workout details, splits, heart rate, effort, and route” in its official workout-summary instructions.

- Tap Show More beside a section for additional information.
The Apple Watch is primarily the live monitoring screen during the session, while Fitness on iPhone is the documented review workflow for the completed workout. Depending on the workout, the summary can include the map or route, splits, heart rate, effort, and other details. Apple documents this review process in its instructions for ending and viewing a workout summary.

Why is the Apple Watch workout map missing?
A missing route most often means that Location Services for Apple Watch Workout was not enabled, the session was recorded as an indoor workout, or the workout was not reviewed in the correct Fitness location.

- Set the permission to While Using the App.
- Confirm that the workout was an outdoor activity rather than Indoor Run or a treadmill session.
- Open Fitness on iPhone, scroll to Sessions, and select the completed workout.
Changing the permission after a workout cannot be treated as a guarantee that Apple Watch will reconstruct a route that was not recorded. The permission needs to be enabled before the relevant outdoor workout.
What should you do if Apple Watch distance or pace is inaccurate?
Calibrate Apple Watch outdoors when distance, pace, or calorie measurements seem inaccurate. Apple recommends wearing the watch in a flat, open area with good GPS reception and clear skies, starting Outdoor Walk or Outdoor Run, and walking or running at a normal pace for about 20 minutes.
Calibration can improve distance, pace, and calorie measurements and can help Apple Watch learn your fitness level and stride when GPS is limited or unavailable. Calibration is an accuracy-improvement procedure, not a guarantee that every future route will be exact. Follow Apple’s Workout settings and calibration guidance for the current watchOS instructions.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Does Low Power Mode affect route tracking?
Battery-saving settings can reduce the frequency of GPS and heart-rate readings, so they are a trade-off rather than an accuracy improvement.
Apple documents Low Power Mode and an additional Fewer GPS and Heart Rate Readings option for walking, running, and hiking workouts. The reduced-readings option lowers how often GPS and heart-rate data is collected and turns off alerts, splits, and segments. Use normal readings when detailed route and workout information matters more than extending battery life.
| Recording choice | Primary benefit | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Normal GPS and heart-rate readings | More frequent route and heart-rate data | Uses more battery than reduced-reading options |
| Fewer GPS and Heart Rate Readings | Can reduce battery use during supported walking, running, and hiking workouts | Reduces reading frequency and turns off alerts, splits, and segments |
| Indoor workout mode | Suitable for treadmill or indoor exercise | Not the normal path for recording an outdoor GPS route |
Apple’s Workout settings documentation describes these battery and reading options. Choose the setting based on whether battery duration or detailed workout recording is the priority.

Which Apple Watch route-tracking workflow should you use?
Use the standard outdoor workflow for most activities: enable location permission, start an outdoor workout, monitor live metrics on Apple Watch, end the session, and review the route in Fitness on iPhone.
| Situation | Recommended workflow | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| You want a map of a new outdoor run | Outdoor Run with Location Services enabled | The route may be absent if permission was not enabled before recording |
| You want treadmill metrics | Indoor Run or the appropriate indoor workout | Do not expect the session to behave like an outdoor GPS route |
| You want to race against a familiar course | Race Route for an outdoor run or cycle | The same route must have been repeated with little to no deviation at least two times |
| You want longer battery life | Use the documented reduced GPS and heart-rate reading option where available | Alerts, splits, and segments are turned off, and readings are less frequent |
| You want the full saved history | Fitness on iPhone > Sessions | The watch is mainly the live workout display; iPhone is the documented detailed review location |
The simplest reliable answer is to treat permission, outdoor recording, and iPhone review as one workflow. If a route is missing, check permission and workout type first; if a route is present but measurements look wrong, calibrate outdoors rather than switching to a battery-saving setting.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why is my Apple Watch workout map missing?
The Apple Watch workout map may be missing because Location Services for Apple Watch Workout was disabled, the workout was recorded indoors, or the session has not been opened in Fitness on iPhone under Sessions. Set the permission to “While Using the App” before future outdoor workouts.

Where do I find my Apple Watch workout route and details?
Open Fitness on iPhone, scroll to Sessions, tap the completed workout, and review the summary. The summary can include the route, workout details, splits, heart rate, and effort; tap Show More for additional information.
How do I track a route on Apple Watch?
Use the Workout app and select Outdoor Run, Outdoor Walk, or another appropriate outdoor workout before tapping Start. Indoor Run and treadmill workouts are intended for indoor exercise and should not be treated as normal GPS route recordings.
How do I fix inaccurate Apple Watch distance or pace?
Apple recommends calibration in a flat, open outdoor area with good GPS reception and clear skies. Start Outdoor Walk or Outdoor Run and walk or run at a normal pace for about 20 minutes; calibration can improve distance, pace, and calorie measurements but does not guarantee perfect accuracy.
The Bottom Line
For Apple Watch route tracking, set Apple Watch Workout Location Services to “While Using the App,” record the session with an outdoor workout, and review the saved route in Fitness on iPhone under Sessions. Use calibration for distance or pace problems, and remember that reduced GPS readings save battery by sacrificing workout data and features.
