Apple Watch can estimate how long you sleep and how much time you spend in Awake, REM, Core, and Deep stages, then show trends in Apple Health. Use those records to spot patterns and assess changes to your routine—not as a diagnosis or a precise measurement of sleep quality. Here’s how to set it up, understand the Sleep Score, and know when to seek medical advice.
Set up Apple Watch sleep tracking
You need an iPhone with current iOS and an Apple Watch with current watchOS. Apple’s setup instructions require at least one hour of wear and a battery charge of at least 30% before bed. A dead battery means no overnight tracking. See Apple’s sleep-tracking setup guide.
- Turn on tracking. On iPhone, open the Health app and follow its Sleep setup, or use the Sleep app on Apple Watch. Enable Track Sleep with Apple Watch.
- Set your sleep goal and schedule. Choose a bedtime and wake time. Sleep Focus can reduce notifications during the scheduled period.
- Charge and wear the watch. Reach at least 30% battery before bed and wear it for at least an hour. Apple recommends a comfortable fit; an overly loose watch may register excess movement.
- Review the record. In Health, check sleep duration and estimated stages, with daily, weekly, monthly, and six-month charts. Apple Watch itself displays recent sleep data for the prior 14 days.
These instructions reflect Apple Support’s guidance published September 15, 2026; interface details can vary with software updates.
What Apple Watch reports—and what it does not
Apple Health reports estimated time asleep and time in Awake, REM, Core, and Deep stages. These are classifications inferred from watch data, not direct readings of brain activity. Apple’s October 2025 technical document describes stage classification using accelerometer data and validation against recordings that include polysomnography and at-home EEG. Apple also describes watchOS 26 and iOS 26 changes intended to improve classification, including detecting quiet wake. Those are Apple’s method and performance claims, not evidence that a watch is equivalent to a sleep laboratory. Read Apple’s technical document.

An independent living systematic review and meta-analysis found overall Apple Watch sleep accuracy to be moderate, with sleep-versus-wake differentiation better than distinctions among physiologically similar stages. Treat a particular night’s stage totals as estimates; don’t use them to diagnose a sleep disorder. Read the review in npj Digital Medicine.
Understand the Sleep Score
Apple’s Sleep Score ranges from 0 to 100 and summarizes three inputs. It is a scoring summary, not a clinical measurement or a verdict on whether you slept well.

| Score component | Weight | What Apple says it reflects |
|---|---|---|
| Sleep duration | 50 points | How long you slept |
| Bedtime consistency | 30 points | When you fell asleep, considered in the context of the previous 13 nights |
| Interruptions | 20 points | How often you wake and how long you remain awake |
The weights and scoring details are from Apple’s watchOS 26 Sleep Score guide. A score is most useful as one view of a pattern: look across multiple nights and consider how rested and alert you feel during the day rather than reacting to one number.
Use sleep trends to test practical changes
For adults aged 18–60, the CDC recommends at least 7 hours of sleep per day. Its recommendations are 7–9 hours for ages 61–64 and 7–8 hours for adults 65 and older; children and teens have different needs. The CDC also emphasizes that quality includes uninterrupted, refreshing sleep—not just duration. See CDC sleep guidance.

Rather than trying to optimize every watch metric, choose one or two habits to adjust and observe your sleep record alongside how you feel. This is a practical way to use the data, not proof that tracking itself improves sleep.
- Keep bedtimes and wake times consistent.
- Make the bedroom quiet, relaxing, and cool.
- Turn off electronic devices at least 30 minutes before bedtime.
- Avoid large meals and alcohol before bed, and avoid caffeine in the afternoon or evening.
- Exercise regularly and maintain a healthy diet.
If you regularly have trouble sleeping or notice symptoms of a sleep disorder, talk with a healthcare provider. The CDC suggests keeping a sleep diary with bedtime, night waking, wake time, naps, exercise, alcohol or caffeine, and medications; a provider can decide whether tests, including a sleep study, are appropriate.

What Apple’s sleep-apnea notifications can tell you
Apple Watch sleep-apnea notifications are intended to flag signs that may be associated with sleep apnea, not to diagnose, treat, or help manage it. Apple warns that not everyone with sleep apnea will receive a notification. A lack of an alert does not rule out the condition; discuss concerns with a doctor.
According to Apple Support, the feature requires Apple Watch Series 9 or later, Apple Watch Ultra 2 or later, or Apple Watch SE 3, with current watchOS and a current iPhone. It is intended for adults 18 or older who have not already been diagnosed with sleep apnea. The watch must be worn for at least 10 nights in a 30-day period for analysis. Availability may vary by country or region, so check Apple’s sleep-apnea notification requirements for local availability and current details. Apple published that support article September 25, 2026.
