Apple Watch Ultra 3 can track a hike, show compass data and downloaded maps, help retrace your route with Backtrack, and attempt Emergency SOS via satellite when cellular and Wi-Fi are unavailable. It is a useful layer of navigation and communication—not a guarantee of rescue or a substitute for trip planning, navigation skills, or suitable backup equipment. Set it up before you leave service, and understand the conditions each feature needs.
What Ultra 3 can—and cannot—do on a hike
Apple lists hiking workouts, compass information, custom waypoints, Backtrack GPS data, offline maps, and custom route creation among Ultra 3’s capabilities. These features can help record activity and orient you, but the available specifications do not promise that every map or route function works identically in every location or without prior preparation. Check your route and prepare maps before losing connectivity. Apple’s Ultra 3 specifications describe the supported hiking features.

Emergency SOS via satellite is a separate capability from navigation. If an emergency call or text cannot connect over cellular or Wi-Fi, the watch can attempt a satellite connection where supported. That attempt still depends on regional availability and conditions for reaching a satellite.
How to prepare Apple Watch Ultra 3 before a hike
- Check the route and local conditions. Review weather, closures, map coverage, and park guidance. Prepare the map and custom route while you have connectivity; Apple lists offline maps and custom route creation as Ultra 3 features, but do not assume an unprepared map will be available off-grid.
- Set up Medical ID and emergency contacts. Use the Health app on your iPhone to configure them. Apple says the information appears on the watch after setup and may be shared when contacting responders via satellite.
- Keep Messages available and try the satellite demo. Apple recommends keeping Messages installed and trying the Satellite Connection demo before you need the feature. Read Apple’s Emergency SOS via satellite instructions for current setup details and supported-country information.
- Leave a trip plan with someone who is not going. Share your itinerary and expected return time, and agree on what they should do if you miss your check-in. The National Park Service advises hikers to prepare an emergency plan and leave trip details with someone. Its hiking safety guidance also cautions that cell phones may not have reception in backcountry areas.
- Charge the watch and plan for power conservatively. A manufacturer battery estimate is not a guaranteed hiking-workout runtime. For longer trips, decide in advance how you will preserve power and what independent backup you will carry.
How to use Ultra 3 for tracking and navigation on the trail
Record the hike
Start the Hiking workout to record activity. The workout tracks the outing; it is not, by itself, a navigation or emergency-response plan.

Check compass data and waypoints
Use the Compass app to view bearing, incline, elevation, coordinates, and waypoints. Treat these as aids and cross-check them against your prepared route and the terrain. If you use a conventional compass, move the watch away while taking a reading: Apple warns that magnets can affect compass accuracy, including the accuracy of an external compass. See Apple’s compass accuracy guidance.
Use offline maps and custom routes
When cellular service is unavailable, use maps you prepared for offline access. Apple lists offline maps and custom route creation for Ultra 3, but its specifications do not establish that a particular map display or route behavior is available in every area. Have a navigation method you can use if the watch map is unavailable or insufficient for the terrain.

Use Backtrack to retrace, not to replace navigation
Backtrack uses GPS data to help retrace your route. Start with a prepared route and pay attention to landmarks and terrain rather than treating the recorded track as the only source of direction. If you become disoriented, NPS advises trying to determine your location with a map, compass, and landmarks.
Can Apple Watch Ultra 3 call for help without cell service?
It can attempt Emergency SOS via satellite if a call or text to emergency services cannot connect because cellular and Wi-Fi coverage are unavailable. Apple describes the feature as a way to connect with public emergency services under exceptional circumstances when no other means are available. It is not a guarantee that a message will get through.

To attempt a connection, you must be outdoors with a clear view of the sky and horizon. The watch needs to be dry; wetness may affect the satellite connection. Follow the on-screen prompts, answer the emergency questionnaire, and remain connected while messages are sent. If configured, the watch may share your Medical ID and emergency-contact information, your answers, your location including elevation, and remaining battery information.
Availability is regional, and Apple lists supported countries and device-origin and operating-system exceptions. Check the current country and setup details on Apple’s support page for your destination instead of assuming coverage is global. Apple also describes Messages via satellite and Find My location sharing via satellite; these are separate features, not emergency-service guarantees. Its 2025 product announcement says satellite Find My location sharing can update once every 15 minutes, but that interval does not guarantee emergency connectivity. See Apple’s Ultra 3 announcement.

Will Apple Watch Ultra 3 battery last for a long hike?
Apple reports up to 42 hours of normal use and up to 72 hours in Low Power Mode. These are Apple’s estimates from tests conducted in July and August 2025 on preproduction units, using defined mixed-use scenarios over 42 and 72 hours, respectively. Apple says actual results vary with use, configuration, network, signal strength, and other factors. They are not guaranteed runtimes for continuous GPS hiking, a particular cold-weather trip, or multiple days of navigation. Apple’s specifications provide the test qualifications.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesLow Power Mode involves trade-offs: Apple’s documentation says it disables or limits features including Always On Display, background heart-rate and blood-oxygen measurements, certain notifications, and some cellular and Wi-Fi connections. Decide whether those reductions suit your hike before relying on the longer estimate. The available battery figures do not establish a guaranteed continuous Hiking workout runtime.

How the watch fits into a backcountry safety plan
Use the watch as one layer in a plan that also accounts for route-finding, communication, and power. NPS says, “Your safety is your responsibility while hiking in national parks.” Its guidance recommends planning ahead, preparing an emergency plan, and considering a personal locator beacon where cell service may be absent.
| Option | Works without cellular service? | Connection or availability limits | Navigation, power, and preparation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ultra 3 navigation features | Downloaded offline maps and Backtrack GPS data are listed features; prepare maps before leaving connectivity. | Map coverage and specific route behavior are not guaranteed for every location. | Uses watch power; no guaranteed continuous hiking runtime is published. Requires advance map preparation and the ability to interpret navigation information. |
| Ultra 3 Emergency SOS via satellite | Can attempt an emergency connection when cellular and Wi-Fi are unavailable. | Requires a satellite connection, supported regional availability, an outdoor location with a clear sky and horizon, and a dry watch. | Follow prompts and remain connected while messages are sent. Battery availability and successful connection are not guaranteed. |
| Map, compass, and landmarks | Yes; these do not depend on cellular service. | They do not provide satellite messaging. Compass readings can be affected by magnets, including the watch. | Require appropriate equipment and navigation skill; keep the watch away from a conventional compass when reading it. |
| Personal locator beacon | NPS recommends considering one for areas where cell phones may not have reception. | Specific coverage, operating details, and suitability depend on the device; the NPS guidance cited here does not compare models. | Provides an independent safety-equipment option; check its instructions and readiness separately. |
No single option makes a route safe. Choose equipment and plans for the specific route, conditions, and local guidance, and do not make the watch your only way to navigate or seek help.
